J 18, 2017 2 — O L L V C C

The physical presence of Jesus in the world through the Incarnation is an extraordinary gift of God. Jesus’ taking on flesh and dwelling among us is the greatest way that God could reveal himself to the world. What better way than for God to become one of us, so that living among us, we might better know Him, our one true God! This Sunday the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ; or as it is known in Latin, Corpus Christi. Through this special feast the Church recognizes, in a very solemn way, the Real Presence of Jesus in the bread and wine of the Eucharist. Inspired by St. Juliana of Mt. Cornillon in the13th century, there was a desire to establish a feast in the Church that would focus solely on the Eucharist. Pope Urban IV, in 1264, instituted the Solemnity of Corpus Christi to be observed on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday as a feast for the entire Latin Rite. While the institution of the Eucharist is celebrated on Holy Thursday, the liturgy of Holy Thursday also commemorates Christ's washing of the disciples' feet, the institution of the priesthood, and the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. So many other events take place on Holy Thursday that the institution of the Eucharist is not the main focus. For this reason, the Feast of Corpus Christi was established to create a feast focused solely on the Holy Eucharist. It was also to be celebrated on Thursday in keeping with the Thursday observance of the Last Supper. Corpus Christi was also observed as one of the ten original Holy Days of Obligation in the Roman Catholic Church. Although they are still solemnly celebrated, most of the original Holy Days no longer carry the obligation to attend mass. Other Holy Days, such as the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord and Corpus Christi, are now celebrated on Sunday. Such is the case in many dioceses of the United States, including the Diocese of Las Vegas. In some countries, such as Poland, Corpus Christi is still traditionally observed on the Thursday following Trinity Sunday. It is also recognized as a national holiday. The day is usually observed with the celebration of Mass and a grand Eucharistic procession through the streets of the city. During the procession the Eucharist is carried in the monstrance to four prepared altars. At each of the altars the Gospel passages pertaining to the Eucharist, as is written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John respectively, are proclaimed. The procession concludes with a solemn benediction. Because the Sunday schedule at our parish is so busy, and since it is cooler in the evening, we celebrated Corpus Christi in our parish on the traditional day this past Thursday. Mass was celebrated at 6:00pm followed by a procession with the Blessed Sacrament outside on the parish and school grounds, stopping at four altars along the way. I would like to thank everyone who participated in this very special liturgy. I offer a special thanks to the members of the Polish and Filipino communities who prepared the four altars and for the donations of flowers which adorned the altars so beautifully. To the musicians and singers, altar servers, the children who carried flowers, ushers, sacristans, lectors and Extraordinary Eucharistic ministers and maintenance, thank you all so very much! The purpose of Corpus Christi is to celebrate our faith in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. The Roman Catholic Church has held this belief of Jesus’ Real Presence in the Eucharist from the beginning. Today, most Christian churches do not hold that belief as we do. Many believe the bread and wine are simply symbols that remind us of Jesus. Corpus Christi is our opportunity to uphold our belief that the Eucharist is the real Body and Blood of Christ, and to honor Christ’s presence among us in the Eucharist. Fr. Gerry

VOCATIONS To respond to the call to the priesthood and religious life requires a profound love for Christ and His Church and the readiness to serve whenever one is called upon to do so. The dignity and success of the priesthood is the faithfulness one has to Christ and His mission. On our own, this is not possible to achieve because faithfulness to Christ is to faithfully walk the Way of the Cross. To fulfill this exalted mission, Jesus Christ gives the special gift of the Holy Spirit to enable the one he has called to be faithful. For this reason, the one who realizes that he is called to this mission should not fear to respond because the assistance of the Holy Spirit is given to those who obey Christ’s will (Catechism: 1556). The call to the priesthood and religious life is more urgent today than ever. The lack of peace, immorality, indifferentism, and growing atheistic tendencies all demonstrate the bankruptcy of God’s love in many people’s

hearts. The love of Christ, which can only heal these wounds of human sin, must be proclaimed. But how can they call on Him in whom they have not believed? and how can they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach? And how can people preach unless they are sent (Romans 10:14-15)? One should not fear to embrace the will of God. Responding to God’s will is the best decision a human being can ever make. God has the capacity to transform us to His likeness if we allow Him. Our inadequacies can truly be transformed into strength and they should never get in the way to embrace God’s will (See the call of the Prophet Jeremiah: Jer 1:4-10).

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

On the weekend of June 25, our diocese will take up the Peter’s Pence Collection. Our participation supports the charitable work of Pope Francis as he reaches out to those who are marginalized and suffering around the globe. By supporting this collection, you join the Holy Father in bringing a little more mercy into the world.

Pope Francis called to us in his 2016 Urbi et Orbi address: “May efforts be made everywhere to promote the culture of encounter, justice and reciprocal respect, which alone can guarantee the spiritual and material welfare of all people.”

We are taking up this collection to be part of the Church’s effort to promote a culture of encounter and justice. Your support makes it possible for the Holy Father to carry out his charitable works around the world, to help victims of war, natural disasters, and other difficult situations.

Let us join with our brothers and sisters in faith from around the globe to help Pope Francis reach the marginalized in our world. Please prayerfully consider how you can best support the collection this year. For more information about the collection, please visit www.usccb.org/peters-pence.

Thank you, and may God bless you abundantly, I remain

Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Joseph A. Pepe, D.D., J.C.D. Bishop of Las Vegas

LIFE TEEN: Our high school aged Life Teen program offers the youth of our parish the opportunity to gather amidst their peers to explore the truth and beauty of their Catholic faith and grow in the love of Christ in a fun and relaxed environment. We currently have two separate meetings: every other Wednesday, called LIFE NIGHTS, where we explore different issues that are relevant to teenagers, and every other Sunday, called SOCIAL NIGHTS, where teenagers gather to build and strengthen community through various social activities. All high school aged teenagers are welcomed and encouraged to attend!
