O 29, 2017 2 — O L L V C C

While the world around us gears up for Halloween, the Church prepares to celebrate the glorious Communion of Saints on November 1 and remember all the Souls of the Faithful Departed on November 2. Over the years Halloween has developed to be the celebrated eve of All Saints Day, fixating on a dark, mysterious and even frightening vision of a spirit world of ghosts and goblins. While the mysteries of the unknown can be frightening, the Church wants to help us realize that life beyond this world is the fullness of life that God desires to share with us for all eternity. The November 1 observance of All Saints Day is a composite celebration of God’s people, our brothers and sisters, from all times and places, who now share eternal life.

The Communion of Saints is a rich treasure of our Catholic Faith. The saints are our elder brothers and sisters in Christ who themselves have faced the challenges of life and have shown us how to live life and be faithful. There are many, many saints who are celebrated by the Church. These are men, women and children whom the church has set before us, through the process of canonization, to be our heroes and heroines; our mentors; our inspiration. These are people who are very real and whose names we have come to know, who spur us on to victory in the practice of our faith. Through the observance of All Saints Day, the Church also sets before us a cloud of common saints, everyday people, who have lived their lives with love for God and man. Most of these are anonymous people, and others are members of our own families, our friends, whom God has called from this world and who now share the everlasting glory of His Kingdom. All of us are born to be saints. All of us are called to be saints. For it is God’s desire that we share life with Him in His Kingdom for all eternity. It is All Saints Day, which we celebrate on November 1, that reminds us of this awesome reality. On All Souls Day, November 2, the Church remembers and prays for the souls of all the faithful departed who are in Purgatory. The Catholic Church maintains that souls, at the time of death, who are in friendship with God, but who have not yet fully detached themselves from sin, or who have not been fully purged of the effects of their sins, must first go through a process of purification before they may see God face to face. The soul is conscious of what is happening and is grateful for this grace yet desperately longs for its ultimate union with God. Prayer can bring consolation to the souls in Purgatory, and that’s why we pray and offer Masses in their intention. That is also why this special day, on November 2, is dedicated to honor, remember and pray for the souls in Purgatory. In fact, the entire month of November is given to such prayer. In the 2 Book of Maccabees 43-45 it is written, Judas the ruler of Israel then took up a collection among all his soldiers, amounting to two thousand silver drachmas, which he sent to Jerusalem to provide for an expiatory sacrifice. In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, inasmuch as he had the resurrection of the dead in view; for if he were not expecting the fallen to rise again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death. This is why we offer prayers and Mass intentions for our beloved dead. This is why we have asked you to submit to us the names of your beloved dead so that we may keep them in the sanctuary of the church and pray for them on All Souls Day and throughout the month of November. We are having a special novena of masses for the souls of the faithful departed, especially for those you have submitted to us, beginning on November 2 and continuing through November 11. May our loving God grant His mercy of them all. There will also be a special Mass of Remembrance on Thursday, November 30 at 6:00pm. This mass will be in memory of all the people whose funerals were held in our parish Since last November. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Fr. Gerry

A Note about Cold & Flu Season Please be mindful of not shaking others’ hands for the Sign of Peace when you are sick and could pass on germs, especially during flu season. No one is obligated to shake hands at the sign of peace. As an alternative to shaking hands, you may simply bow to those around you and say, “Peace be with you.” If your fellow parishioners decide upon this option, do not be offended, as it is merely for sanitary concerns and is not personal.

You may want to also consider not taking the Blood of Christ while you are sick.
