Were you ever asked if Canada has a 4th of July? Only to realize that it is a trick question. Certainly Canada has a 4th of July, every country does, but it’s not their Independence Day. In the United States, the 4th of July is Independence Day. This week Wednesday, the United States will observe July 4th, Independence Day, with great celebration. Independence Day, more commonly known as the 4th of July, is a national holiday in the United States. It commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, which took place on July 4, 1776, and

declared the United States’ independence from Great Britain. The legal separation of the original Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence. After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by the Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the wording of the Declaration, and finally approved it on July 4. Fifty-six delegates to the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia signed the United States Declaration of Independence, announcing that the thirteen American Colonies, which were at war with Great Britain, were now independent states, and thus no longer a part of the British Empire. Although the wording of the Declaration was approved by Congress on July 4, the date of its signing has been disputed. Some historians have concluded that it was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4 as is commonly believed. Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams however, all wrote that the Declaration had been signed by Congress on July 4, 1776. Furthermore, the Journals of Congress, the official public record of the Continental Congress, also supports the July 4 signing.

Interesting facts about the 4th of July… Did you know that of the 56 delegates who signed the Declaration of Independence, two of them, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson served as the second and third presidents of the United States respectively? Did you also know that both President John Adams and President Thomas Jefferson died on the same day, July 4, 1826, the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence? Although not a signer of the Declaration of Independence, but a Founding Father and fourth President of the United States, James Monroe died on July 4, 1831. Three presidents died on July 4th. Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President, was born on July 4, 1872. The most famous signature on the Declaration of Independence is that of John Hancock. John Hancock was never president of the United States but he was President of Congress and was the first to sign the Declaration. Hancock's large, flamboyant signature became iconic, and the name “John Hancock” emerged in the United States as an informal synonym for the word "signature". The 4th of July is, without a doubt, one of the best celebrated holidays of the year. With summer activities of picnics and outdoor gatherings, parades and fireworks, it is truly an American holiday. I hope everyone will enjoy this great American holiday, and remember what a great country the United States of America truly is. God bless the USA!

I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome Fr. Richard Philiposki back to Las Vegas. Fr. Rich is a former pastor of St. Joan of Arc Parish and a member of the Society of Christ. Although Fr. Rich will not have an official assignment, he will be in residence at the rectory and will be available for pastoral assistance. Welcome back to Las Vegas, Fr. Rich!

Fr. Gerry

“Jesus has invested marriage with a dignity which represents something quite new in reference to all that we have considered until now. He raised it to the rank of a Sacrament. He made of this sacred bond a specific source of grace. He transformed marriage — already sacred in itself — into something sanctifying.”

— Dietrich von Hildebrand, Marriage: The Mystery of Faithful Love
