Dear Parishioners, Several parishioners have notified me this past week that they received an email from me requesting of them a favor. These requests are bogus, and they are not from me. The favor consists of making a request to obtain a gift card of some type, and sending the information on the card, along with the security code, so that it can be used without actually having the gift card in hand. The senders of these requests are using my name, Rev. Gerald Grupczynski. They are not using my phone number or my email address. Again these requests are not from me! If you receive any such request saying it is from me, please do not respond to it. If you are uncertain, please check with the parish office. I apologize for this inconvenience. - Fr. Gerry

Next Thursday, we will again be celebrating Independence Day. Independence Day, more commonly known as the 4th of July, is a national holiday in the United States. It commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, which took place on July 4, 1776, and declared the United States’ independence from Great Britain. The legal separation of the original Thirteen Colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2, 1776, when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence. After voting for independence, Congress turned its attention to the Declaration of Independence, a statement explaining this decision, which had been prepared by the Committee of Five, with Thomas Jefferson as its principal author. Congress debated and revised the wording of the Declaration, and finally approved it on July 4.

Fifty-six delegates to the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia signed the United States Declaration of Independence, announcing that the thirteen American Colonies, which were at war with Great Britain, were now independent states, and thus no longer a part of the British Empire. Although the wording of the Declaration was approved by Congress on July 4, the date of its signing has been disputed. Some historians have concluded that it was signed nearly a month after its adoption, on August 2, 1776, and not on July 4 as is commonly believed. Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams however, all wrote that the Declaration had been signed by Congress on July 4, 1776. Furthermore, the Journals of Congress, the official public record of the Continental Congress, also supports the July 4 signing.

Interesting facts about the 4th of July… Did you know that of the 56 delegates who signed the Declaration of Independence, two of them, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, served as the second and third presidents of the United States respectively? Did you also know that both President John Adams and President Thomas Jefferson died on the same day, July 4, 1826? The fourth President of the United States, James Monroe, died on July 4, 1831. Three presidents died on July 4th. Calvin Coolidge, the 30th President, was born on July 4, 1872. The 4th of July is, without a doubt, one of the best celebrated holidays of the year. With summer activities of picnics and outdoor gatherings, parades and fireworks, it is truly an American holiday. I hope everyone will enjoy this great American holiday, and remember what a great country the United States of America truly is. God bless the USA!

Just to let you know… Fr. Tom Ludwicki left Las Vegas Monday morning and arrived safely in Chicago on Wednesday. Fr. Tom also informed us that he received a call that his brother, Bogumil, in Poland, was having emergency surgery for cancer. Please remember Fr. Tom, his brother, and parents in your prayers.
