In the writings of the Acts of the Apostles we are told that Jesus presented himself alive to his disciples appearing to them over a period of 40 days and speaking about the Kingdom of God. This past week, Thursday, May 25, marked the fortieth day after the resurrection and what traditionally has been observed as the Ascension of the Lord. For pastoral reasons, the bishops of the United States have agreed to allow the observance of the Ascension of the Lord to be transferred to the following Sunday so that a greater number of the faithful can celebrate this great event. Today is the Sunday following the 40th day after Easter, and this Sunday we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord.

For 40 days after His resurrection, Jesus, at various times, showed Himself to His disciples in order to confirm their faith and to prove that He is truly risen and alive in His human body. The ascension marks the end of these appearances and ushers the disciples into a new phase in which they will now carry on the mission of Jesus without His physical presence among them. Jesus told His disciples to “go out and make disciples of all nations” (Mt 28,19). He also reassured them and told them not to be afraid, “I am with you always, until the end of time” (Mt 28,20). In the Acts of the Apostles Jesus tells His apostles “not to depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father about which you heard me speak; for John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit” (Acts 1,4-5). After the ascension, the disciples stayed in Jerusalem in a cenacle of prayer and vigil in anticipation of the coming of the promised Holy Spirit. For nine days they prayed. Then on the 50th day after the resurrection (Pentecost), the Holy Spirit was poured out upon them. The nine days of prayer is the model for the novenas Catholics often participate in today. This weekend is also Memorial Day weekend. Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for remembering the people who died while serving in the country's armed forces. Memorial Day is currently observed every year on the last Monday of May. This national holiday originated as Decoration Day after the American Civil War in 1868. After the Civil War ended in 1865, many communities both north and south began holding memorial days honoring those who died. General John Logan, commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, officially proclaimed May 30 as Memorial Day in 1868. The holiday was recognized by all states who had been members of the Union, though many of the states that had seceded refused to honor the holiday. As the commemoration became more common across America, communities tended to honor all who gave their lives in the service of their country in all wars and conflicts. Memorial Day was upheld by federal law until 1967. The following year the U.S. Congress moved three federal holidays from their traditional days to the nearest Monday so that federal workers and other businesses, which honor federal holidays, could have a three-day weekend. Memorial Day now falls on the last Monday in May by law, which took effect in 1971. Many people visit cemeteries and war and veteran memorials on Memorial Day. In many cemeteries, and especially in veteran cemeteries, American flags are placed on the graves of fallen soldiers and veterans. Graves are also decorated with flowers and wreaths. Many towns and cities hold memorial masses, prayers services and parades, which honor the military and civil servants as well. God bless all the men and women who have served our country. May they rest in peace. Memorial Day is considered the unofficial start of the summer vacation season. Even Our Lady of Las Vegas School has brought its school year to an end this past Friday. As we enter into this summer vacation season, we wish everyone a safe and relaxing vacation time. Happy Memorial Day to everyone! Fr. Gerry

A Note about Cold & Flu Season Please be mindful of not shaking others’ hands for the Sign of Peace when you are sick and could pass on germs, especially during flu season. No one is obligated to shake hands at the sign of peace. As an alternative to shaking hands, you may simply bow to those around you and say, “Peace be with you.” If your fellow parishioners decide upon this option, do not be offended, as it is merely for sanitary concerns and is not personal.

You may want to also consider not taking the Blood of Christ while you are sick.

God of power and mercy, you destroy war and put down earthly pride. Banish violence from our midst and wipe away our tears, that we may all deserve to be called your sons and daughters. Keep in your mercy those men and women who have died in the cause of freedom and bring them safely into your kingdom of justice and peace. We ask this though Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

We are seeking the generosity of our parishioners to support our High School Youth Program. There are 200 envelopes, labeled 1 - 200, posted on a large bulletin board in the vestibule of the church. Simply grab any envelope off of the board and return it with the amount that is shown on the front. If you grab envelope #47, you would give $47. Take envelope #168, give $168. If you select envelope #1, that is 1 more dollar towards our goal. Your generous contributions will help us to invest in the teens of our parish so that we can continue to provide more meaningful and enriching experiences for them, and continue to build community amongst them, helping them to feel at home in the parish that they belong to. Please address all questions to our Youth Minister, Marc Sayre, at [email protected]. Thank you for your generosity!

LIFE TEEN: Our high school aged Life Teen program offers the youth of our parish the opportunity to gather amidst their peers to explore the truth and beauty of their Catholic faith and grow in the love of Christ in a fun and relaxed environment. We currently have two separate meetings: every other Wednesday, called LIFE NIGHTS, where we explore different issues that are relevant to teenagers, and every other Sunday, called SOCIAL NIGHTS, where teenagers gather to build and strengthen community through various social activities. All high school aged teenagers are welcomed and encouraged to attend!

• Where is your journey of faith leading you? • Are you interested in knowing more about the Catholic Faith? • Do you know someone who might be interested?

If so, come and see what the RCIA process is all about. The Right of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process for non-Catholics who are interested in (or even thinking about) joining the Catholic Church.
