Dear family,
Now back in the swing of Ordinary Time, at least for a few weeks, Our Lord reminds us that He can work in the
most ordinary realities. The Wedding in the town of Cana is such a precious story from Our Lord’s life. Jesus
blesses “marriage” by making this the context for the first of His miracles. There is the wonderful exchange
between Our Blessed Mother and Jesus. But among the beautiful subtleties of this account, is the jugs that were
used. That’s right, you heard me right, the jugs! The obvious miracle is that Our Blessed Lord transformed water
into wine, but what is not so obvious is that the containers (jugs) used to do this were meant for the ceremonial
washing of feet. It was this water and these containers that Our Lord used to transform into a glorious wine.
Intuitively, this makes no sense. Why not find the purest water that was available to them, or at least find
another type of container that has a much cleaner purpose? Friends, this was meant to be a sign that God has
no boundaries, He can work with difficult situations and in the midst of a banal, commonplace, and messy life!
Reconsider your own life with its schedule and obligations, perhaps there are some of those details that can be
sanctified by God, that we need to offer up to Him. A vibrant life of faith does not need to be marked always by
large events, but in staying faithful to a relationship in the small and seemingly insignificant things. So pray in
traffic, talk to God about the things that annoy you or give you anxiety, praise Him for your blessings as you get
ready in the morning, because He can work in these moments too!
In His joy, Fr. Daniel
