GRAND KNIGHT’S MESSAGE

“We Can Do Better Together”

Vivat Jesus

Dear Brother Knights,

April has been very busy. Starting with the communion breakfast on the 16th

we had 9 Knights participate at the Mass and breakfast.

Thank you for all the brothers that participated at the Easter morning sunrise

Mass. It was standing room only.

Bob Michaud kicked off Operation Hope in April with a big bang bringing in

over $1300.00 on the first weekend of the event. Please help Bob keep the

momentum going by participating with May’s event.

The State convention was held on April 25th and 26th. It proved to be very

lively as elections were held for new State officers and we have a new State

Deputy Frank Davis. Frank has been a Knight for over 30 years and was born

in Lancaster and lived the majority of his adult life in the Fort Mill before

retiring.

Remember you became a Knight to make a difference. Get involved in one

activity, you will make a difference.

God Bless,

Vincent Rosacco

Our Lady of Grace, Pray

for us and the whole

world.

“MAY IS MARY’S MONTH”

“MARY MOTHER OF GOD”

“MARY MOTHER OF OUR CHURCH”

"And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this

be, since I have no husband?" And the angel

said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon

you, and the power of the Most High will

overshadow you; therefore the child to be

born will be called holy, the Son of God. And

behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old

age has also conceived a son; and this is the

sixth month with her who was called barren.

For with God nothing will be impossible."

And Mary said, "Behold, I am the servant of

the Lord; let it be to me according to your

word." And the angel departed from her.

The true meaning of Memorial Day

Memorial Day now suffers the same secular fate as Christmas -- its commercial value has

far outstripped its original meaning.

That fact is especially evident here in a resort area, where Memorial Day weekend is

considered the kickoff to the busy summer season.

Although there is nothing terribly wrong with that, and we couldn't change it anyway, we

hope readers will give a few moments thought to the real meaning of Memorial Day this

weekend.

The trouble with evoking memories from past military conflicts is that it is like looking at a

grainy black-and-white photograph or newsreel (an outdated term in itself).

For many Americans who can barely remember life without color photography, looking at

these black-and-white images has little impact. They represent another time, one that is

hard to connect with today.

But for those who lived through the past few wars, there is color in the memories, and for

many of those who served in the military, the color is blood red.

For them Memorial Day is not a history lesson, quickly forgotten like other lessons from

our school days. For them it is the father, the brother, the son, the husband, the pal who

never came home.

And for those of us living today, the war dead are our vivid connection to Memorial Day --

because it is an eerie fact that many of us would not be here today were it not for a quirk of

fate that allowed our fathers to survive a war.

How many of the more than 400,000 World War II dead would have fathered the geniuses,

the creators, the liberators of today's generations?

How many of the 116,000 World War I dead, the 54,000 Korean War dead, or the 58,000

Vietnam War dead? How many of the 500,000 Civil War dead would have fathered

children whose impact would still be felt in our lives today?

Actually, many of these dead patriots were themselves only 18 or 19 years old, so they were

robbed of the chance to leave us any legacy other than the memory of their sacrifice.

A wounded seaman who was taken aboard a rescue vessel during the D-Day invasion was

quoted in Life magazine about the fundamental mystery of war:

"(The ship) was loaded with the bodies of sailors, soldiers, airmen; the wounded and

survivors. And on board was the body of my friend Pete Petersen. He was going to be 21 on

June 22. One thing you always wonder is, who makes that decision: Who dies and who

doesn't?"

On this holiday weekend, let's not forget the meaning, the mystery and the tragedy behind

Memorial Day.

ASCENSION OF OUR LORD

May 29, 2014

The Ascension of Jesus (anglicized

from the Vulgate Latin Acts 1:9-11

section title: Ascensio Iesu) is the

Christian teaching found in the New

Testament that the resurrected Jesus

was taken up to Heaven in his

resurrected body, in the presence of

eleven of his apostles, occurring 40

days after the resurrection. In the

biblical narrative, an angel tells the

watching disciples that Jesus' second

coming will take place in the same

manner as his ascension.[1]

PRO LIFE

Prayer

Heavenly Father, we have turned our backs on you

and your principles in your Word. We have allowed

man to usurp Your role as God over life and the

number of our days. But we come to you in

brokenness and repentance over our sin.

We cry out for Your mercy and ask You to remove

the scourge of abortion from our land.

Use us as your vessels, Lord, to bring the light of Your

Truth to our nation once again. Because of Christ we

pray,

Amen.

FOOD COLLECTION

DON’T FORGET THE NEEDY

`

Our Lady of Grace Knights of Columbus food

collection will continue throughout the year. We are

asking that everyone coming to our meetings to

bring some nonperishable food item. Canned goods,

pasta, peanut butter, jellies, dried cereal, paper

products, etc. Of course we have no place to store

these items as food pantries do, so we will continue

to take all of the collected food to the local pantries

serving Indian Land. The Supreme council has a

program that all councils will receive $100.00 for

every 500 pounds of food donated. That is a good

way to take that money and use it for other charities.

Let’s take advantage of this program! So far we have

contributed over 300 pounds for Thanksgiving and

BelAir pantry. We are almost there!!! Thank You

The Cause of Venerable Michael J. McGivney

The process of “saint making,” more properly called the process for canonization, is normally long and

complex.

In 1997, Archbishop Daniel A. Cronin of Hartford, Conn., opened Fr. McGivney’s cause for canonization.

Dominican Fr. Gabriel B. O’Donnell was named the postulator, or promoter, of the cause.

Over the next three years, in collaboration with the Knights of Columbus and the archdiocese, Fr. O’Donnell

and others compiled the historical record of Fr. McGivney’s life and works.

Some 700 pages of documentation—called “the acts”—were presented to Archbishop Cronin in March 2000.

He attested to their authenticity and entrusted them to Fr. O’Donnell. That same month, Fr. O’Donnell

conveyed the acts to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints at the Vatican. The Congregation for the

Causes of Saints soon attested that the Church’s norms had been successfully met in this initial diocesan

phase of the process toward sainthood.

The Congregation for the Causes of Saints appointed a relator, or advocate, to work with Fr. O’Donnell in

the writing of the positio, or extended argument, for Fr. McGivney’s canonization.

The positio is nearly 1,000 pages in two volumes, one Fr. McGivney’s biography, the other an essay on his

spirituality. The volume on spirituality is organized around his life of virtue. The biography is based on text

prepared for the cause by Christopher Kauffman, professor of American Church history at The Catholic

University of America in Washington, D.C., and author of two books on the history of the Knights of

Columbus.

The positio was presented to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in January 2002.

On June 30, 2000, the diocesan phase of the investigation into a reported miraculous cure attributed to Fr.

McGivney’s intercession was completed. That report was also conveyed to the congregation, where it

unrewent strict review. One miracle is required for beatification, at which time Fr. McGivney would be

declared “Blessed.” Another miracle after that declaration is required for canonization or sainthood.

The important work of guiding the reported miracle through the process of approval by the Congregation for

the Causes of Saints belongs to the postulator of the cause. Often, such a process requires additional

information on medical terms and procedures from the locale where the reported miracle occurred.

The postulator should be present in Rome to be available to collaborate with the Congregation. In order to

make this possible, the Knights of Columbus, the chief sponsor of the cause of Venerable Fr. Michael

McGivney, appointed a new postulator, Dr. Andrea Ambrosi, to handle the cause. Fr. Gabriel B. O’Donnell

will become the vice-postulator in the United States.

On the eve of Palm Sunday, March 15, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI approved a decree recognizing the heroic

virtue of Fr. Michael McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus. The papal declaration was a major

step that significantly advances the process towards sainthood and gives Fr. Michael the distinction of being

regarded as “Venerable Servant of God.

In December 2011, Brian Caulfield, a communications specialist in the executive office of the Supreme

Knight, who holds a master degree in Theology was appointed as second Vice Postulator. His charge is to

promote the Cause in the Philippines, where it is hoped that a miracle will come through the intercession of

Fr. McGivney.
