Pope: The Choice Between Good, Evil is One We All Have to Make Catholic News Agency July 2017

Pope Francis said good and evil are often entwined, and that as sinners, we can’t label

any one group or institution as bad, since we all face temptation and have the ability to choose which path to follow. “We are all sinners!” he said, explaining that with his death and resurrection, Jesus Christ “has freed us from the slavery of sin and gives us the grace of walking in a new life.” Thanks to our baptism, Jesus has also given us the Sacrament of Confession, “because we always need to be forgiven for our sins,” Francis said, adding that “to always look at the evil that is outside of us means not wanting to recognize the sin that is also within us.” “Jesus tells us that in this world good and evil are totally

entwined, that it’s impossible to separate them and weed out all the evil,” Pope Francis said, adding that “only God can do this, and he will do it in the final judgment.” Pope Francis closed his address praying that Mary would intercede in helping us to observe in the world around us “not only dirtiness and evil, but also the good and beautiful; to expose the work of Satan, but above all to trust in the action of God who renders history fruitful.”

Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Aloha!

Many changes have occurred at Our Lady of Good Counsel School during the past year and I am writ-

ing to you today to announce one more.

Mrs. Melanie Chinen, who served as our school principal during the past year, in-formed me that she was offered a position within the DOE and has accepted. Her deci-sion was not an easy one for her to make. After much prayer and discussion, she has decided that this is the right decision to make for herself and for her family. I gave her my blessing and accepted her resignation with a heavy heart.

Before leaving for my short vacation, I appointed Mrs. Chantelle Luarca as the in-terim principal with every confidence that the school is in good hands. Mrs. Luarca is an experienced teacher at OLGC School with an extensive professional resume and a solid back-ground in religious education. She has already begun the transition into her new position and will continue to guide our second grade chil-dren in their studies and will prepare them to be our first class to receive the sacraments of Confirmation and 1st Holy Eucharist.

Our Lady of Good Counsel School will continue to move forward with many changes to come. It is only through the continued support of our entire commu-nity that we will overcome the obstacles we face. Ignore rumors and speculation as it does our children no good. I ask that you, as members and leaders of our parish community, continue to provide support to our school. With Christ as the center of our Church and School and with the guid-ance of our most loving Blessed Mother, we will achieve the positive growth we seek. Pray for our children, faculty, and staff as we begin the new school year.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Pascual

OLGC SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENT

MINISTRY CORNER“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations.”

“ Just as Jesus prays to the Father and gives thanks be-fore receiving his gifts, so he teaches us filial boldness: “Whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you receive it, and you will.” Such is the power of prayer and of faith that does not doubt: “all things are possible to him who believes.” Jesus is as saddened by the “lack of faith” of his own neighbors and the “little faith” of his own disciples as he is struck with admiration at the great faith of the Roman centurion and the Canaan-ite woman. -Catechism of the Catholic Church, Article 2 #2610

The purpose of this prayer group is to help deepen one’s faith through group prayer and singing. Our group prays

for peace in the world; true conversion of hearts; for the sanctification of priests, deacons, our Parish and parishioners; for unity, perseverance, love and charity; and for personal intentions. Some of the prayers include the reciting of the Rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet. The members meet once a week on Thursdays from 4:30 to 6:00 P.M. We encourage each and every one to consider joining us in prayer to ask God for forgiveness, to offer thanksgiving and to ask for His unfailing help.

“I joined the Blessed Mother Prayer Group in response to Mama Mary’s request for prayer, penance and sacrifice in a spirit of reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary; for the conversion of poor sinners; because I love Jesus and Mama Mary so much; and my desire to grow in holiness for the glory of God. Trusting in Mama Mary’s intercession, we hope to obtain salvation of souls and an era of peace for all mankind.” (Editha “Edi” Cabico)

“I have been a member of the Blessed Mother Prayer Group since 2016. I like it because every Thursday we meet at church to pray for help in our problems; to pray for our families, loved ones and friends; and any personal petitions. I personally feel lifted up as we pray in one voice as a group. As Jesus said, ”When two or three are gathered in My name, there I am in their midst.” Yes, indeed, I feel His strong presence during prayer and I want you to experience this by joining us every Thursday from 4:30-6 P.M. at OLGC Church.” (Maria Stone)

MEET ONE of OUR OLGC ALUMNAE: TESTIMONIES of FAITHby Callan Medeiros

Hello. My name is Callan Medeiros. I at-tended OLGC School from preschool four through sixth grade. I went on to at-

tend Kamehameha where I participated in band as well as sports, and was a State wrestling champion. I graduated in 2014 with an honors diploma. I just completed a year of schooling at the United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School in Colora-do Springs, and will be attending the United States Air Force Academy as a Cadet this coming year. As a student here at OLGC, I really enjoyed the family atmosphere. My teachers were supportive and always seemed concerned for our well-being. I made great friends, many of whom I still keep in touch with. We had a wonderful time being in school; even though we were working hard on our assignments, we had fun on the playground and enjoyed our time in class. We even had a good-na-tured competition with each other to have the best grades. For our curriculum, we always studied math, English and science. I used to like these short sci-ence reports we had to write all the time called “I Wonder” where we would choose a topic we were “wondering” about, do some research and write about it. I remember learning our “LEAPS,” an acronym in song form, to instill goals for us to strive for: Lifelong learners; Effective communi-cators; Active Christians; Problem solvers; and Self evaluators. I also remember studying gram-mar every year (we followed the Shurley Method); needless to say, when I went on to other schools, I was at the top of the class when it came to writing because of my command of grammar. I also liked that learning about and living our Catholic faith was a part of everyday life at school. While we had a religion class and many of our reg-

ular class lessons incorporated a Christian perspec-tive, we also attended Mass every Tuesday. A great bonus was that we got all our Sacraments during regular school and didn’t have to go to Sunday school! OLGC School helped develop a strong founda-tion for me both academically and spiritually. The discipline of studying, the gathering of knowledge, and the thrill of competition helped me succeed in my later studies. But also the security of knowing how God is a part of my life and the Church is a family who supports me strengthens my faith and propels me to serve others and to do what is right. I am sure that is why I am at a military academy where the challenge is both academic and physical; I want to serve my community and my country to the best of my ability. I know my life is only just beginning and I am sure hardship and struggle is in the future. But I know my faith will keep me strong to see things through and I can thank OLGC School and OLGC Church for the guidance they gave me.

A profound stewardship prayer is offered by the young king Solomon in today’s first reading. He asks the Lord to give him an understanding heart, compassion towards God’s people and the insight to distinguish right from wrong. An understanding heart, or wisdom, is a gift from God. It is a gift that enables us to make good decisions and prudent choices. Cultivating and sharing this gift is essential, especially when poor decisions and lack of compassion have consequences that can adversely affect the lives of others. Do we excercise good stewardship over the gift of wisdom? Do we share our compassionate hearts with others?

SUNDAY SCRIPTURE READINGS

In many instances in life, God has blessed us with great blessings, with the good seed he has sown in the ground of our lives. Yet the enemy may always come to sow seeds of destruc-tion. Sometimes they look as toxic as they are, but sometimes they can be more deceiving. It is Jesus who urg-es us to be discerning about what are truly weeds and what are life-giving grains, so that preserving what is good and letting him burn away the evil, we may be gathered forever to him and may call others as well to his great harvest of love..

BISHOP LARRY SILVA

Gospel Reading: Matthew 13:44-52 or 13:44-46 In the Gospel, Jesus tells us more parables about the kingdom of God, particularly about seeking and finding treasure. In the first reading, God offers Solomon anything he wants, and Solomon chooses the treasure of a wise, discerning heart. As we hear these sacred scriptures today, let us listen for the gifts that God is offering us and pray for the grace to choose wisely.

NEXT WEEK’S READINGS: Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14; Psalm 97: 1-2, 5-6, 9; 2 Peter 1:16-19; Matthew 17:1-9

SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - July 29 & 30, 2017

Reading One: 1 King 3:5, 7-12Solomon asks for an understanding heart.

Psalm 11957, 72, 76-77, 127-130“Lord, I love your commands.” May your mercy comfort me in accord with your promise to your servant. Show me compassion that I may live, for your law is my delight.

Reading Two: Romans 8:28-30God predestined us to be conformed to the image of the Son.
