FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
God neither abandons us nor gives up on us. We should also never give up on either ourselves or on God. If we need to remember anything by heart from the bible, it should
be this passage because it reveals who our God is and what His desire is for us all. God’s will is to bring everyone to Him even if we are sinners feeling rejected and unworthy. It gives us the assurance that at the end of a dark tunnel, there is light with our faith in the Father Who loves us immensely. Through this parable Jesus beautifully expresses the immense love and mercy of God. The incomprehensible nature of God’s love is shown to us in the forgiveness that is beyond human conception and understanding. The prodigal son took things for granted, including his own father’s love and the life he had. He felt his father was a hindrance to his happiness. He felt suffocated being home and thought being away was a better choice and that happiness was out there, not with his family. When he lost all of his money through his own bad choices, decisions and unhealthy company of friends, he finally realized that he was completely wrong. He came to his senses and remembered the life he had with his father. He was overcome with regrets and repented for what he had done and made a journey home to his father. The father hoped for his son’s return, waiting and longing for his coming home. God is full of hope, mercy and love! Coming to one’s senses is the work of the Holy Spirit whenever we make mistakes after mistakes. We hear this inner voice every now and then, inviting us to turn away and to run to God (right path). It also reveals the innate divine nature in us when we come in touch with our inner self through prayer or enlightenment. The divine nature comes alive and God’s grace empowers us to rise up and go to the heart of the divine Lord Who is full of forgiveness, mercy and love. God embraces us and reinstates us to the original status as children of God. That’s the greatness of God Who forgives, forgets and empowers us to be great in life again. May our Lady of Good Counsel intercede for us to make the journey of repentance.

Among the primary themes in today’s Gospel when we hear Jesus’ well-known parable of the Prodigal Son is forgiveness and the need to repent. But from a stewardship point of view what is also interesting is one of the secondary themes; the failure to use responsibly the gifts that have been so generously bestowed. The youngest son who demanded his inheritance and left home broke no laws or religious commandments. His wrongdoing was that he wasted his inherited wealth, the abundant gifts given to him. His sin was in his extravagant living; squandering his gifts in pursuit of selfish pleasures. Good stewards acknowledge that everything they have comes from God, and they are required to cultivate these gifts responsibly. What are our God-given gifts? Do we use them responsibly? Do we exercise good stewardship over them?
