August 13, 2017 - Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel from the Book of Matthew, we hear the remarkable story of Jesus walking on the Sea of Galilee. St. Peter reflects his faith in the Lord when he says, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” Jesus says simply, “Come.” We do not know if Peter stepped into the wa-ter or jumped and it does not matter. His faith and trust in the Lord allows Peter, too, to begin to walk on the water. Clearly when Peter’s focus is on Christ, he is able to accomplish this.

However, when Peter loses his focus and be-gins to observe and think about the storm raging around him, he begins to sink. To Peter’s credit he knows exactly to whom to turn in that situation. “Lord, save me.” We may often find ourselves in similar cir-cumstances. Peter knew exactly who to call out to at the moment of crisis. We may do the same.

God truly loves us; we are His children. Listen to the Word of the Lord in Psalm 91: “Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him; I will pro-tect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call on me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trou-ble; I will deliver him and honor him. I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.”

St. Francis de Sales wrote, “Either God will shield you from suffering, or He will give you unfailing strength to bear it. Be at peace then; put aside all anx-ious thoughts and imaginations.”

Loving God, I come to you in thanksgiving, knowing that all I am and all that I have is a gift from you. In faith and love, help me to do your will. I am lis-tening, Lord God. Speak your words into the depth of my soul, that I may hear you clearly. I offer to you this day all the facets of my life, whether it be at home, at work, or at school—to be patient, to be merciful, to be generous, to be holy.

Give me the wisdom and insight to understand your will for me and the fervor to fulfill my good inten-tions. I offer my gifts of time, talent and possessions to you as a true act of faith, to reflect my love for you and my neighbor. Help me to reach out to others as you my god have reached out to me.

Q. Are dreams and the Spirit World be considered messages from God?

A. We can witness the spirit world in our dreams. Often times we are out of our bodies and in the spirit world while dreaming. We can wit-ness the dead and some of the powers of that world. Sometimes, a person can witness the spirits of deceased friends and family members. And the spirits of living people as well. An angel of the Lord came to Joseph in a dream to tell him that the child was of the Holy Spirit and not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife. Matthew 1:20. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. Nightmares have demonic influence. The devil tempts the recovering alcoholic by putting a can of beer in his or her hand in a dream. What we are dealing with is a complex hidden battle between us and demonic forces on a subconscious and unconscious level in our dreams. They prey on our weaknesses.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Roman Canon, called Eucharistic Prayer I, is probably seldom heard in your parish. Some priests will choose it for at least one of the Masses of Christmas, or the Easter Vigil. Such sparing use of this prayer seems strange, especially since it was the only Eucharistic Prayer in the Latin Rite for many centu-ries, from as long ago as 500 right up to 1970. In 1965, the vernacular language was approved for the canon of the Mass. Almost immediately, some experimental texts began to surface in the Netherlands, and priests began to use new Dutch texts without permission. By 1966, Pope Paul VI had set up a committee to consider whether or not it was time to approve such experimentation and extend it to non-Dutch churches. No sooner had the committee been formed than other individuals copied the Dutch by just plunging on ahead. The Dutch bishops had approved the use of the new prayers nationwide in 1968, and Flemish bishops in Belgium quickly agreed. By then, German translations of the Dutch prayers were in wide use, and before long nearly one hundred Eucharistic Prayers, all unapproved, were in circulation in France. The Vatican heard the widespread desire for more vari-ety in Eucharistic Prayer forms, and, with the pope’s approval, the process of creating new official prayers began.
