Intheirpastoralletteragainstracism,OpenWideOurHearts:TheEnduringCalltoLove,theCatholicbishopsoftheUnitedStatesinviteconversionofhearts,minds,andinstitutionsinordertoaddresstheevilofracismthatstillexistsinourcommunities.
Byourbaptism,wearemembersofChrist’sbodyandsharersinhismission.ImitatingChrist,wemustcareforallmembersofourcommunities,honoringeachpersonasunique,sacred,andcreatedintheimageofGod.WeknowthattheevilofracismcutstothecoreofGod’splanforhumanity,devaluingthediversityGodcreatedwithinthehumanfamily.AsfollowersofChrist,weseektoreclaimtheGod‐givensanctityofeachperson’sinviolablehumandignity.Thebishopsremindus,“Thecommandofloverequiresustomakeroomforothersinourhearts.Itmeansthatweareindeedourbrother’skeeper(seeGn4:9).”
Someamongusmaywanttobelievethatourcountryhasmovedbeyondtherealityofracismthathassoprofoundlystaineditspast,orthatracismdoesnotinvolveus.Almosteveryday,newsheadlinesdemonstratethatourcountry’s“originalsin”ofracismcontinuestoimpactthelivesofmanyAmericans,manyofthemCatholic—particularlythosewhobelongtotheAfricanAmerican,Hispanic/Latino,orNativeAmericancommunities.
Therearesignsthatracism’slegaciesremainprevalentinmanysystemicinequalitiesthathavedeepimpactonpeopleofcolor.Thebishopswrite,“Racismcanonlyendifwecontendwiththepoliciesandinstitutionalbarriersthatperpetuateandpreservetheinequality—economicandsocial—thatwestillseeallaroundus.”
LetusallallowtheHolySpirittoconvertourheartstodotheworkofhealing,sowemayliveauthenticallyintruerelationshiptooneanother.Letthefruitofthisconversionbeevidentinourfullcelebrationandintegrationofethnicandculturaldiversity,whichistrulyagiftfromGod.
