THIRTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

From the Pastor’s Desk Every now and then I like to return to a book on the shelf that left

a lasting impression on me. This time it is a book entitled,

“Travelling Light” by Daniel O’Leary. I wrote to the author once

to thank him for writing a splendid article in Catholic periodical

called The London Tablet. He was kind enough to respond to me

by sending me his book with the inscription, “To Fr Thomas, Best

wishes, Travel well on your new journey.” It then dawned on me

that I wrote to him shortly after I arrived here at Our Lady of An-

gels. I had forgotten that fact.

In his introduction to the book, he writes, “There are two ques-

tions to ask yourself, do you feel a call to deepen your life, to live

more freely, to be more happy? And the second is, are you pre-

pared to take the time and the trouble to discover this new way of

living, and to enjoy it forever?” Those are great questions, aren’t

they? Many of us can certainly appreciate the first question. We

are pretty good about diagnosing our troubles, expressing our

feelings and frustration, even being somewhat stuck in a one bad

place or another in our lives. Yet, we know there is a healthy

direction before us. We know that God is here to help, especially

with those persons in our lives who stand so ready to help. We

know, many times, some of the things and the work we need to do

with the healthy longings that are inside of us. That second ques-

tion, then, is the one where the rubber meets the road. Are we

prepared to take the time and trouble to discover this new way of

living and to enjoy it forever? Unfortunately, too many of us,

including myself, find all sorts of reasons to take the time for

other things that are so vastly unimportant than our spiritual

health.

Here I would like to share with you a few of Fr. O’Leary’s words

regarding a powerful image of a well deep inside all of us. It’s a

great and ancient image. We often speak of things that “well up”

within us. And yet, so often, our wells seem very dry in our

lives. Another author, Fr. Thomas Green, wrote a series of spiri-

tual books on this very topic. You might care to check those out

as well: When the Well Runs Dry and Drinking from a Dry

Well. In the meantime, here are the words of Fr. O’Leary. He is

speaking about his own experience but I think we all can identify

and long for the same peace and refreshment that he discovers.

My well was dry until you [Jesus] came. It was blocked with bur-

ied debris. I was trying to fill it from the top. Worn out with

fruitless effort I hand to hand it over to you. Now with the first

springing into new life of the long-repressed water much is hap-

pening. While a peace and satisfaction renew my life, I’m also

more aware of so much rubbish now floating on the new water-all

the forces that have damaged and diminished my true self. In a

flash, I see my sins, the pain of those I hurt, the lost opportunities,

the foolish, unnecessary mistakes. I’m learning not to panic at

this unpleasant sight. “This is the hour,” writes Teilhard de

Chardin, “of the specifically Christian operation when Christ,

preserving in us all the treasures of our nature, empties us of our

egocentrism and takes our heart…(But) it is a salvific hour for the

person enlightened by faith who experiences him/herself being

liberated from selfishness and dying by the force of a commun-

ion.” There is no fear in me now as, after another hard day, I

prepare to rest my head, without explanation or self-

consciousness, on my Beloved. The constant, easy pushing of the

sweet spring water is effortlessly doing its work in the landscape

of my soul.

De vez en cuando me gusta volver a un libro en el estante que dejó una impresión duradera en mí. Es un libro titulado," Travelling

Light " por Daniel O'Leary. Le escribí al autor una vez para darle las

gracias por escribir un espléndido artículo del periódico Católico

llamado The London Tablet.. El tuvo la amabilidad de responderme

para vivir con más libertad, para ser más feliz?. Y la segunda es, Está

usted preparado para tomar el tiempo y la molestia de descubrir esta

nueva forma de vivir y de disfrutar de ella para siempre? “Esas son

las grandes preguntas ¿no es cierto? Muchos de nosotros, podemos

ciertamente apreciar la primera pregunta. Estamos bastante bien so-

bre el diagnóstico de nuestros problemas, expresando nuestros senti-

mientos y frustraciones, aún estamos pegados un poco en un mal

lugar u otro en nuestras vidas. Sin embargo, sabemos que hay una

dirección saludable ante nosotros. Sabemos que Dios está aquí para

ayudar, sobre todo con las personas en nuestras vidas que están de

pie tan dispuestas a ayudar. Sabemos, muchas veces algunas de

las cosas y el trabajo que tenemos que hacer con los anhelos salu-

dables que están dentro de nosotros. Esa segunda pregunta, enton-

ces, es aquella en el momento de la verdad. ¿Estamos preparados

para tomar el tiempo y la molestia de descubrir esta nueva forma

de vivir y de disfrutar de ella para siempre? Por desgracia, mu-

chos de nosotros, incluido yo mismo, encontraremos todo tipo de

razones para tomar el tiempo para otras cosas que son sumamente

poco importantes que nuestra salud espiritual. Aquí me gustaría compartir algunas de las palabras del Pa-

dre .O'Leary respecto a una poderosa imagen de un pozo profundo

dentro de todos nosotros. Es una imagen grande y antigua. A menudo

hablamos de cosas de bien arriba " dentro de nosotros. Y, sin embar-

go, tan a menudo, nuestros pozos parecen muy secos en nuestras
