This week again, we are asked to make more personal sacrifices for our own good and that of our neighbours. It is important especially if we feel discouraged to remember God is always by our side. Today’s first reading (Isaiah 25:6-10) reminds us: ‘This is our God, in him we put our hope that he should save us. Let us exult and rejoice since he has saved us’. At the same time we need to be grateful for the blessings we have. This is reflected in the second reading (Philippians 4:12- 14). A contemporary version translates as ‘I know what it is to be poor or to have plenty, and I have lived under all kinds of conditions. I know what it means to be full or to be hungry, to have too much or too little. Christ gives me the strength to face anything. It was good of you to help me when I was having such a hard time.’ So in the coming weeks no matter where we say our prayers whether in our own home, tuned into Mass on the radio or dropping into the Blessed Sacrament Chapel for a private moment we have to trust in God. It is with that same belief that we are proceeding with the Cathedral’s restoration. As of 8.30 pm on Sunday, 11 October, the Cathedral will be closed. Further to a rigorous tender process, we are delighted that JJ Rhatigan has been awarded the contract. As a local company, many of you will be familiar with this family-owned, long- established business. Understanding the broader public health challenges, the plan at this stage is to be back in the Cathedral by Easter. Throughout the work, we will keep you updated on progress. Building on our initial fundraising success pre-Covid, in the coming weeks, we will resume that initiative. Many parishioners have been expressing their interest in providing financial support and we will share details next month, if the timing is right for you to contribute. Our priority now is to start the project and ensure that first we are settled into our new Mass routine. With October dedicated to the Holy Rosary, we call on Our Lady ‘O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary. Pray for us O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.’ Fr. Pat Farragher, Adm. How can we profess faith in God’s word, and then refuse to let it inspire and direct our thinking, our activity, our decisions, and our responsibilities toward one another? Faith is always demanding, because faith leads us beyond ourselves.
