How each journey opens up more opportunities to serve!
A CLOSER LOOK AT ONE OF OUR JOURNEYS
Every Journey Opens Up
Opportunities To Serve
West Bengal. India
Low wage earners mostly. Significant poverty
Rampant illiteracy
Age old sources of water are polluted now. Causing diarrhea, typhoid, cholera … Hurts more if you are poor
Shallow pumps causing skin lesions, multiple organ failures and ultimately, cancer. High Arsenic content in the ground.
We went there to build a deep water well to serve a neighborhood & a school
THERE WE DISCOVERED …
It is also home to 35 yateem/miskeen boys & girls
Orphan girls whose relatives left them here. Orphan girls who escaped brutal torture by their guardians. Poor girls whose parents cannot feed them and take care of them. In one case, a mother who knew she is going to die soon
due to a brain tumor, left her girl here in safety.
When it rains here …
You have to scramble to protect the meager belongings. We didn’t ask how they face winters.
The place was running low on groceries with debts at local stores
‘CHICKEN BIRYAAANEEE!’ said everyone, when we asked what they love to eat.
Sadly, learned they’d never had that anytime. They had heard it is something good.
Learned they ran out of rice and essentials. Ramadan, when donors are generous, was a month away.
On what they liked, the kids said ‘Chicken Biryaneee!’. We learned they just heard about it. Never ate.
They get a break between asr & maghrib. Was sad, young kids just sitting around every day. Nothing to play with.
Right away, we bought grains enough for a month, for all. With $550
Got Chicken Biryani made. Spent $56.
Everyone enjoyed the biryani … Most of them, first time in their lives.
A badminton set, carrom board, 2 soccer balls and a few jump ropes changed the entire place! Less than $100.
Especially, girls with traumatic pasts
Their break times are now fun! ALHAMDULILLAH!
WHAT CAN WE DO?
Increase capacity. Orphan and destitute girls being turned away
Improve quality of teachers and education. Current quality is poor, cannot afford experienced teachers
Improve living conditions. No proper shelter
This is the least we can do in a region known for women and child trafficking!
It takes just $30 a month to clothe and feed a child
