IMPACTMEASURING WHAT MATTERS: THE IMPORTANCE OF IMPACT

The Joanna Briggs Institute will celebrate 20 years of activity in 2016, which is an impressive organisational milestone. We have achieved a lot during that time and taken great strides towards achieving our vision and mission of improving the health of communities globally through the synthesis, transfer and implementation of the best available evidence for policy and practice.

Measuring and reporting impact is becoming increasingly important to evidence-based healthcare. It is integral to monitoring the influence and effect of research evidence on decision-making at the point of care and its ability to improve health outcomes for the community. Evaluating and reporting on the success of JBI activities, initiatives and outputs and learning from that experience are key to the progression and maturity of our organisation and our future development.

Our ability to continue to enhance our performance and move forward strategically relies heavily on our capacity to understand what works and what doesn’t in our organisation. This document provides an overview of measures of impact undertaken in 2015. It offers an opportunity to celebrate our success and learn from our experience and I am pleased to share it with you as we close another year.

A large factor associated with the wide impact of JBI, both in Australia and worldwide, is attributed to JBI’s commitment to synthesising the best internationally available evidence and providing this information in appropriate, relevant formats to inform health systems, health professionals and consumers. JBI provides programs to enable the effective implementation of evidence and the evaluation of its impact on healthcare practice.

JBI has 78 Collaboration Centres and organisations from 31 countries subscribing to JBI resources (the top subscribing countries being Australia, USA, Canada and Finland), with developing countries able to access JBI resources free via HINARI.

JBI Higher Degree Research (HDR) programs have grown since the first intake of July 2010, with numbers per intake capped to balance the growing demand for this program against the staff capacity available for research student supervision. Our research output in HDR completions is now the third highest in the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Adelaide, and the highest overall when comparing available staff to enrolments and completions.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

“ The JBI training programs enabled

us to overcome barriers related to the

lack of knowledge on evidence-based

practice and implementation of best

practices as well. Now we are working

on implementing evidence-based

nursing protocols in all areas of the

University Hospital.”Gilceria ShimodaNurse, University of Sao Paulo Hospital, Brazil

“ On the two occasions that we

have used this [the JBI] approach,

the clinicians have owned the

review findings and have described

it as a valuable professional

development activity.”Jillian AdamsNurse, Department of Health, Western Australia

“ The tips and tricks for searching

the literature have enhanced

my searching abilities and my

effectiveness in teaching students

about it as well.”Michelle DeCoux HamptonAssociate Professor, Samuel Merritt University, Northern California

“ I can credit utilising JBI resources

to being instrumental in the success

of both the students I mentored, who

conducted systematic reviews - their

Capstone projects were nominated as

rising stars by the International Nursing
