    THE PARLIAMENT

    The Parliament is the highest law makingbody of our country.

    The Parliament is divided into two houses,an upper house called Rajya Sabha and a

    lower house called Lok Sabha.

    The Lok Sabha has 543 members.

    The Rajya Sabha has 250 members.

    The term of the Lok Sabha is five years.

    The term of the Rajya Sabha is Six years.

    The members of the Lok Sabha is electedby the People of our country.

    The members of the Rajya Sabha is

    elected by the state LegislativeAssemblies.

    The Parliament makes laws for the whole

    country.

    In the states laws are made by the

    Legislative Assemblies.

    THE ELECTIONS The members of the Lok Sabha and the

    members of the Legislative Assemblies aredirectly elected by the people.

    Elections are held once in five years.

    Indian citizen attained the age of 18 yearshas the right to vote.

    The first general election in India was held

    in 1952.

    The person completed the age of 25 can

    be a candidate.

    THE ELECTIONS CONTD.,

    Different Political Parties have differentPolicies and they put up their candidatesfor election.

    On the day of the election, voters go to thenearest polling booth and vote for theperson of their choice. These votes arelater counted.

    The person who gets the maximumnumber of votes is declared elected.

    THE PRIME MINISTER

    The party which gets a majority of the seats in the

    Lok Sabha forms the government.

    The leader of that party becomes the Prime minister.

    The Prime Minster is the Head of the Governmentand rules the country with the help of the council of

    Ministers like Home, Finance, Defence, External

    Affairs, Industries, Agriculture etc.,

    Our present Prime Minister is Dr. Manmohan Singh,

    who sworn in as the 15th Prime Minster of India.

    THE GOVERNOR

    Each state has its own Government.

    The Governor is the Head of the state.

    He is appointed by the President of India.The Chief Minster is the Head of the State

    Government and rules the state with the

    help of state Ministers.The term of the State Legislative

    Assembly is five years.

    THE COURTSDisputes about the implementation of the rules

    are settled in courts.

    The Supreme Court is the highest court of

    appeal in the country.

    The Chief Justice of India is the head of theSupreme Court.
