9th Year for Joe’s TeamOnce again it was a perfect July day as participants of Joe’s Team swam, biked and ran in support of cancer research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. In the past nine years, Joe’s Team has raised more than $11 million dollars on behalf of cancer research at The Princess Margaret.

Without the leadership and enthusiasm of Joe and Cara Finley, Joe’s friends and family this certainly would not have been possible. Thanks to their support we have established the Joe Finley Centre for Head and Neck Cancer Research which houses an internationally recognized team of physicians and clinicians.

We are proud of this lasting legacy to the remarkable Joe Finley and his dream to conquer cancer in our lifetime. In July 2016, Joe’s Team celebrated its 10th and final triathlon.

Journey to Conquer Cancer Run or WalkMore than 3,200 participants gathered around Princess Margaret Cancer Centre to take part in the third annual Journey to Conquer Cancer Run or Walk in June. This community based event encourages each participant to support a cancer research site, fund, support group or clinic that is meaningful for them. A wonderful breakfast takes place after the 5K, 3K or 1K walk or run with a fun children’s area. More than $1M was raised on this sunny morning!

JCB Grant SocietyMembership in the JCB Grant Society is offered to donors who have

included The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation in their Will or have

made a gift of life insurance. These special friends of the Foundation have

made the fight to CONQUER CANCER IN OUR LIFETIME part of their own

personal legacy.

The JCB Grant Society is named after the distinguished Toronto professor of

anatomy, Dr. J.C. Boileau Grant, the author of Grant’s Atlas of Anatomy. The

Princess Margaret has a special connection with Dr. Grant. His widow, Anne

Catriona Robertson, left us a bequest of the Atlas when she died in 1982.

With the annual royalty payments, The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation

has created the JCB Grant Chair in Oncologic Pathology, a $2.2 million

endowed chair, as well as a major named endowment fund.

The Grant family’s example is important to us: they have left an important

legacy with a creative gift, and they have improved our ability to conduct

leading-edge cancer research. Through the JCB Grant Society, we pay tribute

both to the Grant family and to each donor who has confirmed a planned

Maria Filosa knows that other cancer patients take comfort from hearing her story, and she shared it often when she volunteered in the Wharton Head and Neck clinic at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. There, in 2007, she was diagnosed with tongue cancer which was aggressively treated with two rounds of chemotherapy given concurrently with seven weeks of radiation treatment. This was followed by life-changing surgery where 70 percent of her tongue was removed and then reconstructed.

What she faced back in 2007 was terrifying and she could barely speak without bursting into tears. But today, she speaks so sincerely about the incredible quality of her care—both physical and emotional. Her doctors were not only compassionate, but respectful that she had very difficult decisions to make, and they took the time to empower her with the information she needed.

This year, Maria made another decision. She decided to leave a gift for The Princess Margaret in her will.

“Leaving a bequest to the cancer centre is another way for me to take control in beating cancer and allowing the brilliance that is The Princess Margaret to lead the way.”
