SAVORING THE EXPERIENCE

One of the wonderful things about vacations is the time we spend two or three weeks afterward savoring the experience, sharing vacation photos and memories with our family and friends. This kind of reflection puts us back in touch with the original experience and reminds us of the relaxation and wonder the vacation afforded us. Today, on the Third Sunday of Easter, the Church blesses us with reminders of what we celebrated two Sundays ago. All three readings are reflections on the meaning of the death and resurrection of Christ. One of the threads running through these reflections is that the purpose of the Lord’s suffering, death, and resurrection was to save us, to forgive our sins. We are planning to turn the ODS Social Hall into a snow-capped majestic mountain retreat in preparation for our "EVEREST" VBS June 15th-19th. We need lots of help! No creative abilities are necessary. We are looking for visionaries, busy people with very little time, creative people, and many who just want to help in some way but can't join us for the week of VBS (or who can). Truly, we need a mighty team of many to share the work as we create an environment full of icy colors, craggy tundra, and breath taking views that kids will be excited to explore. First Holy Communion

We will celebrate First Holy Communion with 30 children and their families on Sunday, April 26th at 2PM, As a Parish community we are called to demonstrate our friendship and faith to these children and their families by our love, prayers and example of the way we live our faith. You are invited to join these children as they receive the Eucharist for the first time and participate in this special meal they have been anticipating. Sacraments are not meant to celebrate alone. Bishop Soto endorses two storybooks to

help elementary school students put their

faith into action.

Two illustrated storybooks offer elementary school-aged children, their parents and teachers examples of how to put their faith in action and participate in solutions to important problems related to the life and dignity of others. The books provide much-needed resources in Catholic social teaching for this age group and are accompanied by age-appropriate

learning resources.

"Green Street Park" is a story about a young boy, his family, and community, who learn to care for God's creation and their own neighborhood by imitating the model of St. Francis of Assisi. In "Drop by Drop," students at a Catholic school " journey" across the world to Burkina Faso, West Africa, and learn how a lack of water affects the lives of children there. The students learn about the work of Catholic Relief Services, see how the problem gets solved, and

make a plan to help.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB)

has published the books through Loyola Press.

"These beautifully illustrated books are a true treasure for parents as well as all educators in teaching children how they, as the followers of Jesus, can solve problems affecting human life and dignity in our backyards and half a world away," said Bishop Jaime Soto of Sacramento, chairman of the USCCB Subcommittee on the Catholic Campaign for Human Development, the bishops' domestic anti-poverty

program.

Bishop Soto added: "The Story of Green Street Park' shows the practical beauty of Jesus' words in Mark's Gospel, The Kingdom of God is at hand.' And Drop by Drop' is a beautiful metaphor for justice that will roll like a river. The story will help young and old plumb their faith as well as their imagination for the untapped resources of

the Spirit seeking to renew the face of the earth."

With "Care for God's creation" a prominent theme in both books, they also serve as a resource to help families, parishes and schools prepare for the release of Pope Francis' anticipated encyclical on

environmental stewardship.

"These books help our children realize and understand the connection to their peers at home and around the world. It's a perspective that is essential to growing into globally aware adults who care about their brothers and sisters everywhere and the environment we live in," said Carolyn Woo, president and CEO of Catholic Relief Services, the official international humanitarian aid agency of the Catholic community in

the U.S.

How Can We Make Our Masses

as Rich as Possible?

The answer is easy - ME! We all have the right and responsibility to participate fully in the Mass, and our enthusiasm is contagious. That young man singing next to us gives us the courage to sing too. When we hear the church filled with the beautiful words of the Our Father, we want to join "with one voice" and lift our hearts together to the God who loves us as his children. The Creed reminds us each Mass that we DO

share the same beliefs and faith.

For those of us in good health, this participation can be effortless. For our family members in less robust health, the physical limitations of our bodies can prevent us from full participation. As a community, we are working on the ways we can be inclusive so that everyone - children, seniors, disabled, and hard-of

-hearing or sight, can be fully involved in our worship.

For some time, we have been asking that those who find it difficult to come forward to receive Communion indicate that they would prefer to have the Eucharist brought to them. We can all help with this by waiting patiently while these people receive, before the rest of the family approaches the altar. We are making efforts to reserve seating near the front of the church, so that those with trouble seeing or hearing can be most present. We are delighted to report that the hearing assistance devices are now fully up and running, and many members are already taking advantage of this service. If you are interested, the devices are available by asking an usher or the Mass Coordinator. Don't be shy - we want you to be

able to join us!

If you have any other suggestions please let the office know. We honor one another by respecting each

other's needs.
