DAY 5 - MOUNT HOOD, ORThis is a highlight filled day as we visit three of our Wonders of Oregon. Much of central Oregon landscape was formed by volcanic activity with layers of recent basalt flows overlaying older ash and tu formations. With erosion these tus became dramatic rock formations. The best example is Smith Rock State Park, now a mecca for rock climbing. Although we won’t be belaying down clis, we do get some spectacular views of the formations on several short walks. The next wonder is Painted Hills, which got its name from the delicately colored stratifications in the soil – yellows, golds, blacks and reds. Our fourth and by no means least Wonder is Mount Hood.

At 6,000 feet high and crowned by eleven glaciers, Mount Hood’s perpetually snowy peak can be seen from miles away. Our accommodation is the Historic Timberline Lodge, built in the 1930s with a design that mirrors the lines of the mountain. A National Park Ranger gives us a tour of this magnificent building on arrival. Tonight relax by the fire, have a glass of wine and marvel at the massive peak outside. (B, L)

DAY 6 - VANCOUVER, WADescend the mountain and arrive at the gateway of the Columbia River Gorge, our fih and final Wonder. Carved by the great Missoula Floods over 15,000 years ago, the Columbia River Gorge is a stunning landscape full of breathtaking vistas and abundant waterfalls.
