Dear Parents, The school year has moved along quickly. We are already more than halfway through the first term. Our students are building confidence in their routine. It is reassuring to watch them walk down the halls with smiles on their faces. We see the positive effects of their home life in the kind way they treat each other. Thank you for the examples you set for them. This week, September 23rd brings several special events. The first is a compliance review from the State Board of Education. They will visit each charter school this year. On Wednesday, the representative from the state, Brett Campbell, will review Excelsior's charter with me and our Board Chairman, Miles Lawrence. He will also visit classrooms to see our charter in action. He is looking forward to having a few conversations with teachers about their professional experience while at Excelsior Academy. Our compliance review on Wednesday is only the beginning of our special events. Thursday is even more exciting. We have hired a film crew to create a promotional video that will play when our webpage opens. On Thursday the 26th, the videographers will be visiting 14 areas within Excelsior's elementary and middle school campus. They will film academic classes, elective classes, a dress rehearsal of the student council's skit, and competitive sports games. Thursday is our chance for our students to "show off" their abilities. We want Excelsior students and faculty to look their very best. Take a little extra time getting ready on Thursday morning. Wear your favorite uniform and come prepared to be on camera! To end this exciting week, our middle school student council will perform a skit on Friday at noon. They wrote it themselves, but it is based on the storyline of Cinderella. Come and see how they will use this story to teach the leader attribute of "empathy." We look forward to the second half of term one. Keep in mind that parent-teacher conferences are next week, October 3rd & 4th. Please attend and meet your students' teachers. Remember our red backpack campaign from last year?

WE’RE BACK!

We only need 20 more backpacks to reach our goal of placing one in each classroom and the high traffic office areas!

If you weren’t here last year, or need a reminder, this is what we are doing… As a school, we want to be as prepared as we can be - for little emergencies all the way up to major disasters. Placing a filled backpack in each classroom and high traffic office area is part of our master plan. Our first goal toward accomplishing this plan is getting the backpacks to keep emergency items in.

We need 65 20 red backpacks to achieve this goal. We’re asking for this particular backpack

Why this particular backpack and color? If the school community needed to evacuate campus, a backpack is the best way to carry supplies. We chose this particular backpack for several reasons: It is sturdy but comes at an affordable price (around $15!), it is small enough for a student to wear if needed, roomy enough to hold the supplies, red in color to easily associate with first-aid, and keeping the color unified helps with organization during a potentially chaotic time. What are in these emergency backpacks? If you want to go the extra mile and help fill the backpacks, this is what is needed for now: Red Backpack Wish List With these backpacks we can be prepared to save a life with Stop the Bleed techniques, or evacuating campus in an emergency. Please consider helping us be prepared for a myriad of situations. If you would like to make a monetary donation, please do so in the front office or online. Tell the office it is for a red backpack!

QUIDDITCH

In PE, one of the most exciting things is to introduce a new game or activity to the students. One of those games this year is Quidditch. If you are unfamiliar with Quidditch it

is a game from the Harry Potter series in which students from Hogwarts fly around on brooms and try to either score by throwing a ball through hoops of differing heights, or by catching the Golden Snitch. Now, we won't be flying around on brooms but students will be running around with "brooms" while trying to score points. However, this is where we need your help. If you’re interested in either donating some time or materials or both, we need help with our goals "hoops". If you are interested in helping in some way, please let

Hoop Specifications The quidditch hoop is the upright and self-supporting structure through which the quaffle must pass to score a goal. Hoop Composition and Construction A. Each hoop must be made up of a post and a circular loop attached to the top. These parts of the hoops may be made of any material other than metal or concrete and must not be dangerous to players. B. A hoop may include a base to keep the hoop upright. 1. This base should not affect the hoop height. 2. Other than metal fasteners, the base must not be made of hard metal or concrete. C. Hoops must be freestanding and able to withstand play. 1. Referees must disallow any hoops that they believe are dangerous to the players. Hoop Shape A. Each set of hoops must have posts of three different heights. 1. These heights must be 3 feet (.91 m), 4.5 feet (1.37 m), and 6 feet (1.83 m). B. A loop must be fastened to the top of each goal post. 1. The inner diameter of each loop must be between 32 inches and 34 inches (81cm and 86cm) 2. The attachment of the loop must not make the height of the post exceed the measurements listed above.
