Holiday Club 2014
This year’s holiday club ran from 28th July to 1st August. Around 30 children took part in the club. This year, the theme was ‘mega makers’ and was designed around inventions. Centre stage was the impressive ‘mega machine’ which made things bigger and better: from turning a small batch into a large loaf of bread, or a single jelly bean into a jar of hundreds, to firing water or balls at everyone, or creating party hats and banners for us to celebrate the amazing love of Jesus.
And it was that love of Jesus the club was thinking about all week, with the different days entitled “Wider and wider”, “deeper and deeper”, “stronger and stronger”, “greater and greater” and “for ever and ever”. We looked at the love of Jesus through the eyes of Matthew, who wrote one of the books of the Bible. We saw how, even though he was an outcast, Jesus invited him to follow him. Matthew told us about Jesus calming a storm and how we can
trust in him. We saw the power of Jesus as he healed Jairus’ daughter, and then saw the ultimate example of Jesus’ love as he died on the cross for each one of us. We ended with the good news that Jesus’ death is not the end. He rose again from the dead and is alive today. Like Matthew, he invites us to follow him too.
We spent time together each day with messy challenges, listening to the Bible story, singing great songs about God’s love, hearing from one of the leaders about themselves, including what they find so great about following Jesus. We
prayed for others each day, and the ‘young engineers’ brought in jokes or plans for their own inventions. The best ones each day won prizes. We also learnt a memory verse through the
week, and by the end of the week, most of the children could tell you “For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life.” (John 3:16, Good News Bible)

The ‘young engineers’ were divided into three teams: the Crazy Creators, Bonkers Builders and Mad Mechanics. Each team created their own mini machine to decorate their team area (“toolshed”). Each day in their teams, they played silly games, made craft and chatted more about the bible story.
At the end of each day, members and leaders shared what they’d enjoyed most – from games, craft, drink and biscuits, to learning more about the amazing love of Jesus.
To round thing off, on Sunday 3rd August, we had a special “mega makers” service in church, with the ‘mega machine’, holiday club songs, and Matthew reminding us that Jesus asks us to share the good news of his love with others too.
The leaders, as well as the members, thoroughly enjoyed the week. Perhaps next year, you could be part of it too?

When the August 2014 magazine went to the printers it was most likely before war was declared in Europe. So here is a jolly report of the latest antics of the choir on their annual outing on the 4th of perhaps June or July to far away places.

By the September magazine war most certainly had broken out; a piece here in marked contrast to an outing to Blackpool.
