Responding to the call of our baptism
With this Sunday’s celebration of the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord we bring the Christmas Season to a close. Back to Ordinary Time! No time is “ordinary,” however, if we are living it in service to our Lord. Two special acknowledgements of folks doing just that!
Thank you, Elise and Gabe! We are truly blessed to have such a dynamic faith formation pro-gram in the parish! Elise Martinez has been leading our high school and young adult groups for the past five years and Gabe O’Lena has been leading our Jr. High group for the past three years. With the New Year they have now swapped ministries, with Elise taking on the added responsi-bility of filling in for Bob McMorrow during his three month sabbatical. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and say “thank you” to Elise and Gabe for their heartfelt ministry to our young people. The good news: we’re not losing them! May God continue to bless you both!
RCIA Rite of Acceptance. This Sunday we also welcome the members of our RCIA class and their families as they complete the first part their journey toward full initiation into the Catholic Church! We extend a heartfelt welcome to Catechumens Chris, Wambli, and Bill. We also ex-tend a warm welcome to Vivian and June-- Candidates for Full Communion. Knight of the Month for January is Roger Finley. Roger is our Council Advocate and insurance agent. He dedicates a lot of time traveling to other Councils to explain the advantages of Knights of Columbus financial planning which includes insurance, long term care and guaranteed rate annuities. The Knights of Columbus continues to be recognized as one of the most ethical businesses in the world, and Roger certainly fits into that group.
Family of the Month for January is Larry and Cheryl Clement. Larry and Cheryl are the LIFE coordinators for Council 12290. They have filled that slot for about a year and have stepped in to lead our participation in praying the Rosary at Planned Parenthood and have attracted a fair sized group of Knights and others to gather it that prayer service. They also coordinated donations of diapers and baby formula during our Friday “Drive-by Food Donations” from May through Octo-ber of 2020. They are also heading up a January 2021 drive to secure donations of baby items for the Pregnancy Crises Center this month. They are both active in many statewide groups and agencies associated with these activities.
Fifth Sunday Rosary
There are five Sunday’s this month so come and say a rosary with the Knights before the 8am Mass Sunday the 31st of January at 7:30am.
Knights of Columbus Diaper & Formula Drive
We have just begun a diaper and formula drive until Lent. Please drop off in the back of
church if you are able to help.

Second Semester each year we highlight
our senior class students.
This week we introduce Caleb Furneri. Caleb was born in Juneau, Alaska and was very young when his family moved to Indonesia to serve as missionaries. He lived briefly in Littleton, Colorado before coming here to Anchorage. Caleb attended Grace Christian School before joining us here at
Lumen in his 10th grade year. Family is very important to Caleb and he speaks fondly of them. He describes his mom as “super smart,” explains that he and his dad are “very alike” and says his brother is his “best friend.”
Caleb has greatly enriched our school over the past three years. His Faith is contagious and he uplifts the community with his positive outlook on life and his magnetic sense of humor. Caleb is best described as a true light of Christ, kind and caring for others before himself. Our seventh grade class looks to him as an awesome big brother..
Caleb says his favorite memories at Lumen are the High School Retreats, working at the Lumen galas and attending sports trips. Caleb has played on Lumen Christi’s soccer team since his first year here, and also spends all his free time playing soccer. Caleb loves going to Mass and finds Adoration especially moving because it gives him the op-portunity for personal reflection and time to “talk with God.” He says his favorite class is Theology because he loves learning about his faith and notes that he has grown significantly in his Faith. In looking back Caleb remarks that Mrs. Spillers has had a strong impact him, “She is a very good teacher and I always learn a lot from her,” he ex-plains. When asked to describe Lumen Christi School in 7 words or less Caleb declares, “awesome, faithful, caring, academically challenging, and Christ-like,” and then adds, “and the teachers are my favorite part of the school.” Caleb is excited to attend a Catholic college in the Fall of 2021. We are looking forward to seeing Caleb’s gifts alive in the world.

Bible Study
Adult Ed. options Is there a God?
If there is a God, which God? If Jesus, which version of Christianity?
Join Ed Wassell as he explores these questions and then begins a Biblical defense of our Catholic faith. Classes are on Tuesdays, at 7PM. They will meet in the school. What does Sacred Scripture have to say about the bible only approach, the Sacraments, papal infallibil-ity, incense, statues, artificial contraception, candles, the Eucharist, the Last Judgment, heaven, hell, pur-gatory, Mary and much more.
*The only requirement is to bring a bible to class.
Hope: Theological Virtue
We all face difficult moments of darkness and anxiety when
things can become difficult. Some may become disillusioned
with life and lose hope. During these challenging times, hope
can also be misunderstood. We may think that it is having a
positive attitude or being optimistic. We may place our hope
in things of this world, such as our work or charitable pro-
jects, thinking they will bring us happiness.
God has placed in each of our hearts the desire and longing
for true happiness. The virtue of hope responds to this inner-
most desire and helps us to place our trust in God. The Cate-
chism of the Catholic Church describes the work and func-
tion of hope. It states:
[This virtue] takes up the hopes that inspire men’s activities and purifies them so as to order them to the Kingdom of heaven; it keeps man from discouragement; it sustains him during times of abandonment; it opens up his heart in expec-tation of eternal beatitude. Buoyed up by hope, he is pre-served from selfishness and led to the happiness that flows from charity. (CCC 1818)
"Hope is the theological virtue by which we desire the king-
dom of heaven and eternal life as our happiness, placing our
trust in Christ's promises and relying not on our own
strength, but on the help of the grace of the Holy Spirit. 'Let
us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for
he who promised is faithful' (Heb. 10:23). 'The Holy Spirit . .
. he poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our
Savior, so that we might be justified by his grace and be-
come heirs in hope of eternal life'" (Titus 3:6-7; CCC 1817).

My name is Gabe O’Lena and I will be taking
over for Elise as Director for Youth and
Young Adults. I just wanted to tell you a few
things about me. I have been a parishioner at
St. Benedict since I moved to Anchorage in
the fall of 2013. I have been working along-
side Bob and Elise as a volunteer for the last 5
years, and have been working with them as
the Jr. High Director for the last 3 years. I

aged and growing our wonderful community.
