Catholics in Phoenix -Vandel ’13

Marcos de Niza came up through the Gulf of California in 1539 and planted the first Cath-olic Church in New Mexico. He called it “the New Kingdom of St. Francis”. By 1897, 40,000 Catholics lived in the Phoenix Area. In 1877, the Sacred Heart Church in Prescott, Arizona was formed. The Sacred Heart Church is the oldest parish in the Diocese of Phoenix, St.

Mary’s Church being the second, and St. Francis Xavier being the third.

Diocese of

Phoenix –Vandel ‘13

Pope Paul VI established the Roman Catholic Dio-cese of Phoenix on December 2, 1969. He gave a mass at the Diocese of Phoenix while he visited.

The logo for the Diocese of Phoenix shows the phoenix bird rising above Camelback Mountain. The cross above the phoenix signifies the connection be-tween the Diocese of Phoenix and the Diocese of Tucson.

The Diocese of Phoenix came 101 years after the Diocese of Tucson, yet the Diocese of Phoenix has 1260 miles of more land.

Significant

People –Vandel ‘13

Pope John Paul II visited Phoenix on September 14, 1987. He visited patients at St. Joseph’s

Hospital and led a prayer at St. Mary’s Basilica. Mother Teresa visited Phoenix on February 2, 1989. Mother Teresa came to build her home

for the poor which was successfully passed by Governor Rose Moffard. Most Reverend Thom-as Olmsted became the Bishop of the Diocese

The Society of Jesus has always been a huge stepping stone in the new world. Mainly

through the Spanish conquistadors and various other conquests and spreading…the Jesuits

had established their dominance as the crusaders for the Christian ideals. They “Set the

World on Fire” through their teachings, missionaries, and idealistic communications.

Nevertheless, the Jesuits found their way to Phoenix and the great state of Arizona through

Father Kino, who began the peaceful conquest of the Pimerian Peninsula. The conquest took

place during the years 1687-1711.

After the death of Father Kino in 1711, the Jesuit missionaries had no stable foundation

to be led from. The 20 missionaries founded by Father Kino were meant for conversion

of the Pima Indians and sanctuary from slave traders. But, it all turned for the worst. Pi-

ma Indians felt that the conversions and taking of their land was wrong and fought back

against the catholic teachings; thus, the period of the Pima Indian Revolts commenced,

(1739-1751). With the Jesuit power dissolving in the peninsula, the Spaniards felt the

Franciscans were better suited in converting and inculcating beliefs of the Catholic

church in the Pima Indians.

Now –Nieblas ‘13

The Society of Jesus has gone through turmoil,

eradication, and death of leaders; yet, the soci-

ety continues to persevere. Through the tough-

est of times they have sought out great leaders

in their every day fathers and leaders who

have lived and cherished in the society. In

Phoenix, we find the parish of St. Francis of

Xavier and the Brophy community. The Society

of Jesus has an ever lasting legacy in Phoenix,

Arizona.

Catholic Education Arizona is an organi-

zation that helps make Catholic schooling

affordable for kids that have the academ-

ic potential, but not the economic re-

sources. It was established in 1998 and

under the 501(c3) IRS tax code, it became

a non-profit organization. The CEA com-

mits to giving at least 93% of students in

Catholic schools the required resources.

started in Phoenix in 1946. Since then, the St.

Vincent de Paul in Central Phoenix has become

an important organization in the Phoenix Dioc-

esan Council.

Frédéric Ozanam was a young law student in Paris .

During a debate, Frédéric was challenged to demon-

strate what he and his Catholic students were doing to

help the poor. He started immediately and after 12

years in France, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul

moved to St. Louis, Missouri, where the headquarters of

the Society of St. Vincent de Paul are now located.

Above: The Foundation for Senior Living is an organization that helps promote quality care for seniors, adults with disabili-

ties, and caregivers. The organization helps with illnesses, aging, loneliness, and substandard housing for seniors.

In Phoenix, there are a few organizations that

help with the elderly. One of them is located

in Mesa and the other in Phoenix. Both organ-

izations are non--profit under the 501 (c3)

IRS tax code. The Americare Hospice and the

Foundation for Senior Living help families

with their elderly family members and pro-

Above: The Americare Hospice and Palliative Care is an organization that helps families prepare spiritually and mentally

before the death of a loved one. There’s currently one in Mesa that was founded in 2004.
