Parental Attention Advised Two dates, one in May and one in June are the days to remember mom and dad, or should I say the designated days to remember our parents. Are we reduced to just once a year to appreciate all that has been done for us as children and adults? I don’t believe it for a minute. Everywhere I go I see an adult daughter or a son spending time with their mother or father…in the grocery store, at church, at a sporting event, at a school function, in a park or at the mall. I’ve seen them share joy at weddings and sorrow at funerals. I love seeing children with their parents swimming, boating, fishing and bowling… and playing pick-up games of football, baseball, basketball and soccer…or learning together at museums and public fairs. Those days are all mother’s days and father’s days. And they are every day of the year, even though they may not be “celebrated” as such. But in our hearts, we must celebrate and appreciate each and every day we can spend with our parents. And yes, let us not forget the designated date of:

Mother’s Day is May 13President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed Mother’s Day as a national holiday in 1914, to be held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May. We love Mother’s Day at Kollman’s Greenhouse because it gives us great joy to help our cus-tomers select a gift that pleases their mom all summer long- a flowering hanging basket, a flat of annuals, a potted geranium, or a beautiful blooming patio planter.

Father’s Day is June 17Father’s Day was born in memory and gratitude by Sonora Smart Dodd in 1909. She chose to hold the first celebration in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a perma-nent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. Dads can benefit from all kinds of things found at our greenhouses- whether it be garden tools, garden gloves, vegetable tubs and yes, Dad’s even appreciate flowers.

Here Come’s The BrideNot only is this the season for moms and dads, it’s also the season for brides and grooms.

Scott’s mom came across a scrapbook of her young life, and we looked through it together, marveling at the simplicity of weddings past - namely Marian and Burt Kollman’s wed-ding in 1941. I bring these excerpts of flower prices to you just because its fun to compare the past with the “now”. And also because the bill of sale for her wedding flowers was from Cooper’s Flowers in Hudson. Many of you know and love Ada Cooper Miller, the “Grande Dame” of florists in Hudson. It was Ada, working in her father’s flower shop, who de-signed my mother-in-law’s flowers for her wedding!

Here they are…1. Bridal Bouquet .....................$4.002. Bridesmaid Bouquet .............$3.003. Boutonnières ..........................50¢4. Mother of the Bride corsage .$1.505. Rental ferns/greens ..............$5.00

To put this in perspective, $1.00 of wedding expenses on the day of her wedding will cost my son and his bride $13.00 on the day of their wed-ding this summer! And just to keep it all in the family, Ada Cooper Miller was the florist of choice for the wed-dings of my brother-in-law, my sister, and my hairdresser- all spanning three decades!Mix together the dressing. Combine the dry ingredients in a bowl and toss with the dressing.

Best if refrigerated a few hours before serving.

Cabbage- A Culinary ClassicLast spring I published a favorite recipe for salad dress-ing using the gifts from a vegetable garden. This year I am highlighting cabbage. It’s good, it’s green, and you can eat it raw in a side dish or cooked with a bit of butter and salt. Here is one of my favorite slaws for summer- it’s an oriental twist on an old favorite, and works well with anything cooked on the grill.

Oriental Salad1 pkg. slaw mix 1/2 C slivered almonds, toasted4 chopped green onions 1 Pkg. Ramon Noodles, crushed (chicken flavor is best)2 T sunflower kernels Dressing1/2 C vegetable oil 2 T sugar1 pkg. dry mix from the soup mix Soy Sauce, salt, sesame oil to taste

true. Its 10 in. mounds of silvery and gray-green foliage are topped with fragrant,

attracts butterflies and bees.

75TH ANNIVERSARY CLASSICS

Each Spring I like to bring to your attention the newest winners of the All America Selections. This year, All America Selections is celebrating its Diamond Anniversary. To commemorate 75 years of introducing superior new varieties annually, AAS announces the All America Classics and credits the breeders of these wonderful plants that have stood the test of time due to their unique or improved traits. Congratulations to:

Tomato “Big Beef’ - Introduced in 1994 by Colen Wyatt, and applauded for its disease-resistance and early finish in the garden.

Dianthus “Ideal Violet” - Known for its early bloom, and continuous flowering while enduring cold and hot temperatures. This plant was bred in Valence, in the South of France, by Mr. Guy Lassartesse and introduced in 1992.

Petunia “Ultra Crimson Star” – Bred by Mathilde Holtrop of Goldsmith Seeds, she achieved her goal of breeding a stable star pat-tern on large, grandiflora flowers borne on compact branching plants. This plant has been enjoyed by gardeners since 1988.

Pansy “Majestic Giants Mix” – A small plant with giant, 4-inch blooms with the traditional blotched face, this plant is the first to flower without cool temperatures to initiate bud. It was this variety, introduced by Mr. Sukeo Miyazaki of Sakata Seed Corp. that started the Fall pansy craze in the South.

Petunia “Wave Purple” - In 30 years of being in this business, I think this is one of the most excit-ing varieties ever introduced. Its unique characteristics of continuous flowering, vigor, and plant habit have made this plant a favorite of every gardener. Mr. Daigaku Take-shita of Kirin Brewery Company, Ltd. was awarded the All-America Selections Breeder’s Cup Trophy for this plant’s impact on the annual flower industry. Prior to this presti-gious honor, Wave Purple was awarded All-America Selection status in 1995.

In your quest to design the perfect patio planter, keep in mind the use of texture to add focal point to the pot, and complimen-tary foliage color to the flowers. Plants with texture can be tall, such as the ornamental grasses of Miscanthus and Pennesetum. Grasses of medium-height are eye-catch-ing and can be found in our greenhouses in what is affectionately known as the 4 inch aisle. Have some fun with these varieties:1. Juncus Spiralis - a corkscrew-type grass2. Fiber Optic Grass- beams up the light3. Carex Bronzita, Red Rooster - deep, reddish color4. Feather - Top Grass- Great Plumes5. Acorus - Striking, vibrant color, unusual fan-shape

For added depth around the outside of your container, add a few of the many trailing flowers to fall over the side of your pot; found, once again, in our 4 inch aisle. Outstanding varieties include: 1. Calibrichoa - mini cup-shaped flowers in every color2. Verbena - vivid purples & pinks on feathery foliage3. Supertunias - prolific bloomers on compact foliage4. Bidens - bright yellow flowers adding punch5. Scaevola - fan-shaped blue and white flowers

And for cascading texture to mix with your trailing and upright blooms, try:

1. Licorice Plant - blue-green leaves in many shapes 2. Solanium - needle-point leaves in light green/yellow3. Nepeta - compact silvery-green fragrant foliage4. Wire Vine - delicate-looking and airy with a small round leaf5. Ipomoea - sweet potato vines in black, chartreuse, and green
