THE THIRD SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY Morning Worship – 9:30 a.m.

January 24, 2021

Prayer in preparation for worship from the 1946 Book of Common Worship:

Almighty God, as we pray for the Church Universal, we pray for Thy

blessing upon the Church in this place. Here may the faithful find salvation, and the careless be awakened; may the doubting find faith and the anxious be encouraged; may the tempted find help and the

sorrowful comfort; may the weary find rest and the strong be renewed; may the aged find consolation and the young be inspired;

through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

PRELUDE I Have Decided to Follow Jesus arr. W. Fritchie Alexandra Nichols, Violin

And Can It Be arr. Mark Hayes John Black, Piano

*PSALTER CALL TO WORSHIP (adapted from Psalm 42:5a, 7, 8, 11)

Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me?

Hope in God; for I shall again praise Him, my help and my God. DEEP CALLS TO DEEP AT THE THUNDER OF THY CATARACTS; ALL THY WAVES AND

THY BILLOWS HAVE SWEPT OVER ME. By day the LORD commands His steadfast love, and at night His song is

with me, a prayer to the God of my life. WHY ARE YOU CAST DOWN, O MY SOUL, AND WHY ARE YOU DISQUIETED WITHIN

ME? HOPE IN GOD; FOR I SHALL AGAIN PRAISE HIM, MY HELP AND MY GOD. *HYMN O the Deep, Deep Love of Jesus PRAYER OF CONFESSION (first silently, then in unison):

POWERFUL AND GRACIOUS GOD, YOU CALLED FROM DEATH TO LIFE THE GREAT SHEPHERD OF THE SHEEP, EVEN OUR LORD JESUS. ON HIS MERITS, AND FOR HIS SAKE, FORGIVE OUR MANIFOLD SINS. COMFORT AND DEFEND THE FLOCK WHICH HE HAS REDEEMED THROUGH THE BLOOD OF THE EVERLASTING COVENANT. AS YOU HAVE CONSECRATED US IN HIM, ASSURE US THAT IN HIM WE ARE HOLY IN YOUR SIGHT. THEN IN THE MINISTRIES OF YOUR WHOLE CHURCH, INCREASE THE NUMBER OF THOSE WHO PREACH YOUR GOSPEL; ENLIGHTEN THE HEARTS OF THE IGNORANT, AND RELIEVE THE PAIN OF THE AFFLICTED, ESPECIALLY OF THOSE WHO SUFFER FOR THE TESTIMONY OF JESUS, AMEN.

A prayer of John Knox, 1514-1572 ASSURANCE OF PARDON

*GLORIA PATRI Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost.

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, World without end. Amen, amen.

Mark 1:14-20After John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God. “The time is fulfilled,” He said. “The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe the gospel!”

As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” At once they left their nets and followed Him.

When He had gone a little farther, He saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

Jonah 2:1-9; 3:1-5, 10From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. He said:

“IN MY DISTRESS I CALLED TO THE LORD, AND HE ANSWERED ME. FROM THE DEPTHS OF SHEOL I CALLED FOR HELP, AND YOU LISTENED TO MY CRY.

You hurled me into the deep, into the very heart of the seas, and the currents swirled about me; all Your waves and breakers swept over me.

I SAID, “I HAVE BEEN BANISHED FROM YOUR SIGHT; YET I WILL LOOK AGAIN TOWARD YOUR HOLY TEMPLE.”

“The engulfing waters were at my throat, the deep surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head.”

“TO THE ROOTS OF THE MOUNTAINS I SANK DOWN; THE EARTH BENEATH BARRED ME IN FOREVER. BUT YOU, O LORD MY GOD, BROUGHT MY LIFE UP FROM THE PIT.”

When my life was ebbing away, I remembered You, Lord, and my prayer rose to You, to Your holy temple.

“THOSE WHO CLING TO WORTHLESS IDOLS FORFEIT THE GRACE THAT COULD BE THEIRS.

But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good.

I WILL SAY, “SALVATION COMES FROM THE LORD.”

***

Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it the message that I tell you.”

So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, three days' journey in breadth. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's journey. And he called out, “Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”

And the people of Nineveh believed God. They called for a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them to the least of them.

(v. 10) When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, He relented and did not bring on them the destruction He had threatened.
