Pro-Life Essay Contest WinnersCongratulations to JP students Teresa Morris, Natasha King, and Jacqui Treco for winning first place, second place, and honorable mention, respectively, in the Senior Division of the 16th Annual Youth Apostles Institute pro-life essay contest. Over 300 young people addressed the topic “Making Hearts Pro-life.” Congratulations as well to the winners of the junior division: Elizabeth Donohue, 7th grader at Holy Cross Academy, Liza Brown, 8th grader at St. Ambrose, and Paul Fritschner, 7th grader at Angelus Academy.

Teresa’s winning essay begins…

“The greatest challenge we face in our society today is to gain respect for the dignity of unborn human life. Once someone understands the horror of abortion, they will never return to the side which promotes the deliberate killing of an innocent child. So the challenge, a challenge we will possibly face our entire lives, lies in converting hearts to the openness and beauty of life.” – To continue reading Teresa’s winning essay, please click here.

Meeting the Governor - Catholic Advocacy DayOn January 28, 2010, a number of JP the Great students –all members of the Life Savers pro-life club- participated in Catholic Advocacy Day sponsored by the Virginia Catholic Conference. Club sponsors Fr. Matthew and Mr. Morales, along with JP Director of Marketing, Ms. Cole, were with the students for the morning briefing in Richmond, the legislative visit to office of the Delegate representing Dumfries, and then later during a special meeting with newly elected Virginia Governor, Bob McDonnell. Sophomore Victoria Moore was selected to represent JP in a private meeting with the Governor and student representatives from other Catholic schools. JP the Great was the only school from the Diocese of Arlington to participate in Catholic Advocacy Day, and we look forward to going again next year!

A Midsummer Night’s Dream a Hit!Finally, after being rescheduled twice due to “snowzilla” - the infamous storm of 2010 - the JP Drama department proudly and expertly presented their first-ever full length play on February 18: A Midsummer Night’s Dream! They preformed to a full house, and entertained the audience with music, dance, beautiful sets and costumes, and many memorable lines! Bravo to all involved, especially Mr. Kean, Drama teacher, and Sister Mary Brigid, Drama coach!

JP waits for meeting with the Dumfries Delegate to begin.

Visitor from Outer SpaceOn January 29, students in the Options program welcomed astronaut Paul Lockhart to their class room for a lesson in space exploration which included a mock flight simulator, models used to demonstrate take off and landing, and stories and memorabilia detailing the adventures of Mr. Lockhart’s career with NASA. Proud daughter Jenna Lockhart, and other Options mentors, also joined the class. BIG thanks to Mr. Lockhart for his time, and for the gifts he left with each student!
