Notes from the Editor's Desk

In June, we took a family trip to the Thousand Island re-gion of New York. It is such a beautiful area that I decided to do a Penn-Ohio tour to the region next year. We will be staying at a hotel on the St. Lawrence Seaway. We are debating over two different hotels but, which ever one we decide on, you will be

able to sit and watch the boats traveling on the river. More information will be published as plans are made for activities.

To all correspondents: if you have email, please email your chapter news. Please email to [email protected]. I appreciate those who use this method. If you don't know how to attach pictures, you can send pictures separately in the mail and I will scan them.

Correspondent deadlines: September 5 October Issue November 5 November-December Issue January 5 January-February Issue

Some of the Penn-Ohio members know I have a Grumpy Garage where we repair Model A’s. Right outside the door there is a droopy, weeping tree, kind of like a willow. Under this tree you will find all my broken and unusable Model A parts. In the summer, you have to move the droopy branches aside to get a peek of the massive pile of junk A

parts. Everything from heads, brake parts, bumpers, distributors, carbs, rims, you name it. If it is broke, it is there.

Several years ago we were working on Matt Barker’s truck. The brakes weren’t working very well. When we took the back brakes apart the backer plate was rusted solid. I told Matt we had better junk under the tree. Out we went and sure enough, under the tree was a couple backing plates in much better condition than his. After a couple bushings and brake shoes, the truck stopped much better. Matt’s junk parts were returned under the tree.

Thanks to everyone that helped with this junk collection, including Don Harvey with his junk collections he donated to Erie’s Chinese Auction which I managed to win twice.

Penn-Ohio Chapter News

Tri-County Correspondent: Melvin Allen

Saturday, July 12th, found us at our usual meeting place-Buehlers Market Community Room in Orrville. Our hosts were Duane Schie, friend Margaret plus Carey and Kelly Carter. The following additional members attended: Raymond and Natalie Fahrni, Charles and Judy Paquelet, Clyde and Ruth Mayberry, Gary and Ginny Heckathorn, Norm and Linda Ream, Paul Rowlands, Glenn and Fern Wolboldt, Luain Graff and friend Pat, Dave and Donna Anderson and Smiths. As per usual, we ordered from the menu and enjoyed our meals.

Dave called the business meeting to order. Donna gave the Secretary and Treasurer’s reports. We were updated on plans made for the September Penn-Ohio meet. We have volunteers for most of the various jobs. We still have several things to decide on.

Reams have our August Chapter meeting and they discussed with us what they would like to do-something different for a change. All agreed-more to come next month.

Fern won the 50/50 and I won the extra drawing. Thanks to Carters, Duane and Margaret!!

On June 22, 2014, the Tri-County faithfuls met down the street from where we were last month. Did I mention “it rained” on our May meet? We were in Gary and Diana’s backyard in New Philadelphia for June.

Roger read the minutes as Jan was covering another base that day. Jan’s minutes even talked about the rain last month. The minutes were read and approved. The treasurer’s report showed up late but we’ve still got money!

The 17 members all enjoyed the spread put on by Gary and Lady Diana. We’ll come back here again! Our guests, Elaine and Tom, from Wintersville, showed up again. Won’t somebody give them a card to join so they won’t be guests and can be card carrying members???

The 50/50 was won by Gary and Diana Stewart ($4.50) ...lots of ice cream!!!!The Tri-County Chapter met on July 13 at “The Barn” in Bolivar, Ohio. Our group of 14 was hosted

by Bob and Joyclin Ely in their nephews restored dairy barn. Gary Sears, the newlywed also has 2 “A’s. We are trying to get him involved. The view from the barn was very picturesque! We are standing looking out the barn door at a farmer rolling bales of straw. Just as he finished guess what happened? It rained! We’ve seen that before.

We learned long time members Bill and Sherilyn Walters are making a final move to Florida next week. Bill and his '28 Tudor won many economy runs in years gone by. So long old friend.

Our minutes were read and approved and the treasurer says we still got money, so far so good.

Copus Hill Correspondent: Neal Franzen

On July 12th, Copus Hill met up to do our dry run of our Penn-Ohio meet in August. The day didn’t start out well as I had car trouble that set us back two hours before we could even get started. Luckily, everyone was helpful and very, very patient to get me going to limp along to where we needed to be. We were happy to

The 50/50 drawing a grand total of $3.00 was won by Melv and Gloria Allen.President Gary read the birthdays for the month of July. Would you believe half our group was born

in July with Bill Walters turning 90 this month!See you in Brownsville, PA next month hosted by the Zavackys.

July 26 saw some 12 or so Rubber City “A”s, a modern, and a ’32 big block hot rod in the Acme parking lot, along with quite a few interested passers-by. President Larry Norton, wife Linda, and Stan & Jeanie Koczur were there to shepherd the Tour de Dover day trip. Larry handed out the new Penn-Ohio by-laws/roster books, and received the new badge-of-honor band-aid just in time for the trip. The tour included the Warther’s Carving Museum & Gardens, the Auman Radio & TV Museum, and the Reeves Victorian Home in Dover, as well as lunch at Pro’s Table Restaurant in New Philadelphia. The return trip included some heavy rain, but all maintained, no breakdowns or resulting possession of the traveling band-aid! Many thanks to the Nortons & Koczurs for leading the trip.

In local news, Secretary Dave “Sparkie” Baker is sporting a cast following recent foot surgery. As if that wasn’t discomfort enough, puppy Maggie took issue with the cast and barfed on it- can we get a break here? Fortunately, Sparkie took it in good humor.

Following the Covered Bridge tour, our next outing of interest will be the Barlow Farms Fall Fest on Sept 14 from noon ‘til 5:00, followed by dinner and a meeting at Zeppe’s Restaurant in Hudson, hosted by John & Sherri Hall.

The Summer may have peaked with the Hall of Fame, Soapbox Derby, Firestone Golf Tourney, Browns Scrimmage, LeBron and on and on, but there’s still lots of nice cruising days left—remember, it may not be Summer, but September is! See you next time.

Cranksters Correspondant Nancy Haake

July was a much quieter month for driving for the Cranksters compared to all the events June had in store for us.

Members Debbie Bailey and Ron Haberman were married Saturday, July 5th, in a Hawaiian themed wedding. It was heard that they even both had leis direct from Hawaii for their wedding! Congratulations to them and may they have many years of Model “A” driving ahead of them!

Saturday, July 12th, found 7 “A’s” meeting in world headquarters in Valley City for a country road drive before arriving at the home of Tom and Kathy Sampson. It was a perfect “A” day—sunny, dry and not too hot. Several other Cranksters caught up with the group for a total of 25! There was a great lunch that included hot dogs and hamburgers that were grilled by Sampson chefs. Lots of sides and desserts were provided by those attending the event. It was an “Engine Extravaganza” by all means! There were many fine examples of antique engines, trucks and cars. There engines running everything from a sawmill to a washing machine. Member John Bartter brought his Model “A” compressor and ran it too for the people gathered. It was a fun day for everyone!

Sunday, July 27, 10 Model “A’s” and 1 modern car left Brunswick from—where else—McDonald’s! After a trip along beautiful country roads, we arrived at Hale Farm and Village. There were 3 more “A’s” joining us there! Besides the original Hale Homestead, a church, additional period houses and other buildings have been brought from all over Ohio to form a village representing life in the 1830’s. Knowledgeable guides explained the architecture and artifacts and artisans exhibited their crafts. Some Cranksters brought picnic lunches, while others enjoyed lunch in the Hale Café. On the trip home there as the usual stop for ice cream at Country Mail—very much of a tradition. What a great day to be out in a Model “A”!

have guests, Val & Mary Jane Young, Valery Johnson's parents, join us for the day. We played our Penn-Ohio game, which was very fun, and then we headed to the Velvet Ice Cream factory for a great and filling lunch. After lunch, everyone browsed around and some even took a buggy ride. Other than the car trouble it was a fun day with friends, and the weather was great. Thanks to the Johnsons for planning out a great day for us.
