Witheachsheltertheyplacedandintalkingtotheirowners,they

learnedbecauseoftheeconomicsit-uation,therewasnowaytheycouldaffordtohavetheirdogs‘fixed’.Knowingaboutthehugepopulationofunwantedanimalsandthegrimoutlook,anotherideawasborn.Withnofencing,dogswouldgetout,dogswouldgetinandbeforeyouknewit,therewasanotherlitterofpuppies.Whereweremostofthesepuppiesgoing?Tothelocal

animalshelterwhichwasalreadyoverpopulatedandinduetimetheywereeuthanized.ItisreportedthatofalldogsandcatstakeninatTriadAreaAnimalShelters58%wereeuthanizedin2010.Volunteerswantedtodosomethingaboutit,eventhoughtheirnumberonepriorityatthattimewastheplacementofshelters.Theydecidedtoraisemoneyto fully payforspaying/neuteringtheseanimals. Yardsales,restaurantfundraisers,specialevents,aswellason-lineadvertisinghelped,butmuchmoreisneeded.Thisgroupalsopaysforrabiesvaccinations,fleatreatmentandpostoperativemedicationifpre-scribed.Thisdoesnotcomecheap.Theservicesareperformedbyalowcostclinic,butstillonaverageitwilltotalbetween$80.00and$100.00withoutcomplications.Yes,theywillpayforcomplicationsaswell,ifonearises.It’shardtosaynoatthattime. Contributionsarecoming,andthroughJanuaryof2012theyhavefunded18animals.InFebruary,17appointmentshavebeenmade.Whenyouconsiderthatonaverageaspay/neuterwilleliminateanaverageoffiveunwantedbirths,that’s175animalsthatwillnothavetobeeutha-nized.ItalsomeansafinancialsavingstothecitizensofGuilfordCountywhosetaxdollarssupporttheAnimalShelter.
