The concept of sowing and reaping is not a complicated concept. One sows (plants)and one reaps (harvests). Anyone who has ever planted a seed ought to understandthis. But sowing and reaping in these verses has a metaphorical sense to it.“Sowing to the flesh” means to plant one’s life in what the Bible refers to as “the lustof the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life”. (I John 2:16). In general, this refers to satisfying what your body craves, focusing your eyes on earthly goalsand pursuing what your ego “needs”. Fleshly sowing reaps catastrophic consequenceseternally. The result is corruption - a word that denotes decay, and destruction. It isplainly not talking about a positive outcome for someone incentivized by the flesh. Sowing to the Spirit is when a person responds to the conviction of the Spirit of Godin drawing them to repentant faith. The Holy Spirit’s role is to convince the unbeliever“of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment”. (John 16:8) When a person realizestheir sinful state and trusts Christ for His righteousness they are delivered from judge-ment. They, of the Spirit, reap (receive) everlasting life.
Frank Snyder is Pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, located on US 12 betweenColdwater and Quincy, 517-639-4239, www.cbcquincy.com..
“...for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he alsoreap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of theflesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to theSpirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.”
