Fractures A bone can be

broken by a direct force or repetitive indirect force.

Fractures can be clean or splintery- straight, on an angle or in a twist.

Fractures A fracture is usually

closed but can be open- this is called a “Compound Fracture”.

Compound fractures are dangerous because it can get infected very easily or could puncture an organ.

Dislocations Shoulders are more

likely to dislocate than other joints because of the circular motion they can perform.

Small joints (fingers) are more likely to dislocate because it doesn’t take much force to harm them.

Treatment of Dislocations Must be set or

relocated by Dr. or professional.

Some dislocations require surgery to fix (elbows, patella).

Rest, Ice after relocation.

Sprains

Sprains are injuries to the ligaments around joints.

A sprain can mean the ligament is torn completely or just stretched.

Occurs when a joint is moved past it’s limit.

Sprains

Often bruise and swell.

Uncomfortable or unable to move the joint.

Any joint can sprain but ankles occur frequently.

Strains Strains are injuries to

muscles or tendons. Occur when a muscle or

tendon has been stretched too far or when the muscle is contracted and it is resisted too hard.

If a muscle or tendon is pulled hard enough it can tear partially or completely.

Treatment of Strains

Rule out complete tear (rupture).

Contusion A contusion is a bruise. Occur when there is

injury that causes internal broken blood vessels in a body part.

Direct Force Sprain or Strain Fracture Etc.

Treatment of Contusions

Usually go away on their own. Will be black/blue/purple and fade to green or yellow.
