the Ottoman Empire and describe the impact the Ottomans had on
global trade.
Who were the Ottomans?
•Muslim Turks from Central Asia
• They were forced west as the Mongols ruled &
invaded Eurasia but gained power after the
Mongols collapsed
What are they known for?
• Creating a new Islamic Empire after the
Mongol domination ended
• Controlling trade: crossroads of
Asia/Europe/Africa
• Great horseman, great warriors, and a very
organized military
• Hired as “military contractors” for the
caliphates
How did the Ottomans gain power &
conquer such a large territory?
Janissaries: soldiers of an elite group of
Ottoman troops who were paid for their
service
• Extremely well trained, respected, and
cared for• Video clip
Devshirme system
• Boys in conquered Christian territories
forced into the Ottoman army
• Converted to Islam
• Carefully trained & placed into army
positions
• Well cared for, so little rebellion occurred
How did the Ottomans gain power &
conquer such a large territory?
– Ottomans conquered Constantinople, ending the 1100
year reign of the Christian Byzantine Empire
– This alarmed European Christians
– Pope called for an Crusade to take back Constantinople from the
Muslim Ottomans but no army materialized
– Strong leaders were able to expand into the Byzantine
– Organized, strong & loyal military
How did the empire expand &

through• This angered the Europeans, who began to search for

Ottoman Empire - 1520-1566– Became emperor at 26
– Under Suleiman the Ottoman Empire reached its height
– By 1526 had conquered Balkans, Greece, Hungary, & almost captured
