SEI’s Mission

Support decision making and induce change towards sustainable development around the

world. We achieve our mission by carrying out innovative, integrated and applied systems research. This forms the basis for policy advice, capacity building, decision support and policy implementation.

Rethinking Development

Transforming Governance

Reducing Climate Risk

Managing Environmental Systems

Our work is research based and focuses on understanding what drives public policy responses to environmental/climate change.

We aim to - help policymakers better-understand the political economy in which public policy responses for climate-resilient development are embedded. - help governments make better-informed investments that both support climate change resilience and reduce poverty. - develop knowledge systems that PM can use for climate-resilient planning - our research explores the gaps between our understanding about the nature and timing of climate change impacts and the design and effectiveness of adaptive responses - design flexible, inclusive and integrated institutional arrangements for constructing and delivering CRD outcomes. Helping to dev alliances and learning groups that can evaluate evidence on building climate-resilient landscapes and livelihoods

SEI -

SEI study provides jumping-off point for Kenya’s policy on adaptation to climate change

SEI produces its own portfolio of products which include:

• Research Reports • Project Reports • Working Papers • Technical Reports • Policy Briefs • Fact Sheets

SEI’s Publications

Any good?

SEI ranked in the Top 10 of the most influential environmental think tanks in the world. In Jan

2014 was ranked second

- Top Global ”Go-To Think Tanks” Report, 2013

Landscapes

- Farms, forests, water bodies and settlements are not isolated elements, but part of a wider landscape in which all land uses are integrated.

- Fundamental for providing food, fresh water and energy and for protecting biodiversity and habitats

- To use these resources sustainably, an integrated perspective is needed

- Building resilient landscape entails viewing and managing multiple land uses in an integrated manner, considering the natural environment and the human systems that depend on it

- Landscapes are vital for sustainable and equitable development

Landscapes

Up to 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions stem from land-use sectors at the same time, climate change is already negatively affecting forestry, agriculture and rural communities. addressing land-use sectors is key to mitigation and adaptation.

climate change

- Launched in 2005

- SUMERNET is a network of organizations in the Mekong Region that supports policy-relevant research and outreach activities to inform and engage policy-makers, planners and stakeholders.

- Pursues an evolving agenda in response to questions and policy issues that arise in the region.

Sustainable Mekong Research Network SUMERNET

- Rapid multiple public and private-sector initiatives and investments are bringing economic dev with important water, energy and land-use implications

- The ‘nexus’ approach to build an analytical framework to support government institutions in thinking about development in this region – particularly around biofuels – and its implications for biodiversity, ecosystems functioning, and the lives of indigenous people.

- Outcome valuable not only to decision-makers and stakeholders but also more broadly across Latin America, illustrating how the nexus approach can help identify water, energy and land-use tradeoffs and support more sustainable development choices that minimize negative impacts.

An Application of the Water-Energy-Land Use Framework to Understand Socio-Ecological Transformations in the Colombian Orinoco

- Submitted in advance of COP15 - - Lays out the possible costs to the country of climate impacts and puts forward policy responses. - Provides jumping-off point for Kenya’s policy on adaptation to climate change - SEI has been invited to make a follow-up study

The Economics of Climate Change in Kenya

- Communities hold a crucial piece of the resilient-landscapes puzzle - Communities are key to creating and maintaining climate resilient landscapes but are the most vulnerable to the devastating effects of climate change - Poverty, inadequate policy frameworks, large-scale agriculture, logging and mining, infrastructure, industrial, and other factors may have compromised their stewardship - Creating provide HoAREN a unique opportunity to shape land use for decades to come
