LONGSHORE CURRENT
RIP CURRENTS
TSUNAMIS
• also called seismic sea waves• should not be called tidal waves• result from sudden movement of ocean bottom – earthquake, volcano, landslide
TSUNAMIS
TSUNAMIS
• travel hundreds of miles per hour• since water is so deep at sea, undetected by boats
• when hit shallow water at coast, build up a wall of water• can be many feet tall
• tsunamis can be extremely damaging
ex: December 26, 2004 – Indian Ocean – 230,000 died – waves up to 98 ft. tall
ex: March 11, 2011 – Japanese Tsunami – 20,000 died

• most common in Pacific Ocean
• there is an international system of seismographs to detect earthquakes, etc. and warn of possible tsunamis
mangroves may help protect against tsunamis
STORM SURGE
• surface waves caused by storm winds
• strong winds pile up water on coast – causes sea level to rise temporarily
• up to 20 feet higher than normal
• floods low lying areas
• especially damaging if occurs with high tide

ROGUE WAVES
• also called freak waves
• occur when two or more wave crests add together to form a short-lived very high wave
