SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN ARTICLE-
Online safety review for the new year
Take some time this month to review your family’s online safety.
Make sure you have strong passwords in place, and that your
security settings are updated. Check where you have passwords stored as well — children who are
tech savvy can easily access inappropriate materials on smart
TVs and devices where passwords do not have to be entered.
Consider installing accountability software on any devices that your
children access. Software like Covenant Eyes or other options can keep your child from visiting any inappropriate or forbidden
sites. For more tips, request a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Revisit
Online Safety Practices” at lacatholics.org/did-you-know.

January 2, 2021 This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. The word
‘Epiphany’ is from Koine Greek ἐπιφάνεια, epipháneia, meaning manifestation or appearance. It is derived from the verb φαίνειν, phainein, meaning "to appear." In classical Greek it was used for the appearance of dawn, of an enemy in war, but especially of a manifestation of a deity to a worshiper (a theophany). In the New Testament the word is used in 2 Timothy 1:10 to refer either to the birth of Christ or to his appearance after his resurrection, and five times to refer to his Second Coming (Parousia). In the Latin-speaking West, the holiday emphasized the visit of the
magi. The magi represented the non-Jewish peoples of the world, so this was considered a "revelation to the gentiles." In this event, Christian writers also inferred a revelation to the Children of Israel. John Chrysostom identified the significance of the meeting between the magi and Herod's court: "The star had been hidden from them so that, on finding themselves without their guide, they would have no alternative but to consult the Jews. In this way the birth of Jesus would be made known to all." Therefore, this solemn celebration is the ultimate revelation of Jesus as the King and Savior not only of the Jews but of all humanity.
Today’s celebration reminds us that God loves all nations and cultures of the earth, and that He communicates with us in many, often unforeseen ways – through internal inspirations, through external events, through people, and through His Word. Many times, these factors are combined in an interplay that becomes clear only in hindsight. The challenge is for us to “decipher” God’s message and respond to it with faith, persevering generosity and courage, just as the Magi did. Now that the Lord – The Emmanuel – has been revealed to all the nations through the appearance of the three wise men who were seeking the newborn King, it our responsibility to share this Good News to others who may have missed this awesome revelation. It is a sad reality that up to now there are still people around the world who do not know Jesus. As modern-day disciples of Him, it is a great challenge to face this fact head-on. As baptized Christians in this modern day and age, what are you doing to make Jesus known to all the world. This might be a very daunting task. What if we narrow down our query to just around the confines of our community? What are you doing to let your community know that Jesus has been revealed to the world? It only takes one act of charity to those who need help to let them know that Jesus is here among us. After all, He is called ‘Emmanuel’ – that is – God is with us. When people witness love in action on a consistent basis despite of the difficulties we face in this time of pandemic, this is what Epiphany is all about. For me, Epiphany is when we experience the love of God in Jesus in real-time. This is God’s revelation of Himself to the world. May God’s presence in you be real and concrete as you face another year of blessings and grace. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2022!
January 2, 2021 The feast of the Epiphany shows us the wonderful adventure, to which our lives turn, in search of the truth. The word Epiphany means a sudden realization or manifestation of a great truth. Men of science and study who followed the truth wherever it led. Gaspar, Melchor and Baltazar knew how to have faith in the truth and to walk to meet it. They were looking for the truth in the stars of the sky and he indicated a guide in the form of a star. And they found the Truth itself: Jesus. In a humble manger and in a tender baby. Right there was the truth. Says the famous verse of John 8:32. "And the truth will set you free." We are invited to connect with the reality that the entire creation; the creator's work draws us to God himself and conspires for our salvation. The Three Wise Men came to Bethlehem because the truth had already set them free. And that search for the truth, in turn, allowed them to recognize that truth when they encountered it head-on. What truths have we discovered this year? How have these truths been revealed to us in our daily lives, in our priorities and plans, and in our personal relationships? How did our life take on a different meaning this year? In other words: What have been our Epiphanies? And every time we get closer to a truth, we get closer to the revelation of the Truth itself, which is Christ. This is the feast of the Epiphany. In the readings we have the Magi and their experience with this search. And we through her are invited to follow our own route to the Epiphany of the Lord. The feast of the Epiphany, or how I grew up calling it "The Feast of the Three Holy Kings" has always been very close to my heart. Since he was a child he has always looked forward to his arrival and his gifts. As a believer, this holiday adds universality to the event of birth and to salvation itself. We have used language such as: "from distant lands", "from the East", to let us know that salvation is for all of us, no matter in which part or corner of this world we were born or in which culture we were raised. We can all discover Christ and follow him. It also adds a sense of inclusiveness to it. Salvation is for everyone, no matter how we are, how we are, how we feel. If these elements of our reality make us feel “from distant lands”, today we are invited to find a way to reconnect and make sense of our lives. On Epiphany, the wise men from the east are carried away by the stars in the sky. And there was one that caught their attention. And this happened doing what they always did, following their passion. When something is observed and loved enough, the subtle changes are discovered, we become sensitive to the signals. It happens to us with events, with things and even with people. They inspire us to discover how God speaks to us and communicates with us through what we love, study, work and love. Everything we love and are passionate about is part of God's work. And God uses his own creation to communicate and to connect with us. Everything in creation has its purpose and tells us the truth of who God is.
