I have great pleasure in congratulating the University of Otago Rugby Club on its distinguished record over 125 years. Of all our sporting clubs, the Rugby Club has probably contributed most to the collegiality and wider reputation of this University.

Given the position of rugby as our national sport, the fact that we have produced no fewer than 65 All Blacks speaks for itself. Apart from such high-flyers, the Club has contributed to the enjoyment and personal development of many thousands of students. One of my own happy memories of student days at Otago is of playing social rugby at Logan Park on Saturday afternoons.

Alumni have travelled from all parts of the world to share in this important celebration and I wish you well in rekindling old friendships and enjoying the camaraderie that this weekend will provide. I also record my gratitude to the Club organisers for their efforts in planning this important event. May you all enjoy your time on campus and be able to reflect on the standing of the University of Otago in the wider community that is enhanced by such occasions.

Vice-Chancellor’s Welcome 125th Jubilee Chairman’s Welcome

Cead mille failte! A hundred thousand welcomes! I welcome one and all, from near and far, to the 125th jubilee celebrations of our famous club. I extend a special welcome to our invited guests.

The University Club has made its mark on local and national rugby as no other. However, the celebrations which take place over Queen’s Birthday Weekend are not simply celebrations of rugby; the many people who will converge on Dunedin for the weekend are coming home, not only to their rugby club, but to their university, and to their university city. In planning the celebrations, we have had unstinting support from the wider university and from the city; it is testament to the sense of shared purpose that the celebrations will be attended by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor David Skegg, and by the Mayor, Mr Peter Chin. The University Club is, and has been for its 125 years, the student club; only students and recent graduates may play for the club. Mr Edwin Darlow, President of OUSA, will also be participating in the celebrations.

The Jubilee Committee has prepared a programme of events which is a mixture of the formal and the casual. There will be opportunity over the course of the three days for both serious reflection, and abandonment and a return, for those with the constitution, to the pursuits of days long gone by.

It is our fervent wish that you enjoy the celebrations in an atmosphere of conviviality and comradeship.

It has been an honour and a privilege to chair the organising committee; I extend my heartfelt thanks to my fellow committee members for their unreserved efforts.

The University of Otago Rugby Club

When Professor George Sale (club president) and William Deans Milne (club captain) and Robert (later the Hon. Robert) McNab (club secretary) founded the Otago University Rugby Football Club in May 1884, little did they know that this would become the most successful rugby club in New Zealand and, quite possibly, in the world.Over the past 125 years, 65 University players have gone on to become All Blacks, 44 while still playing for the Club; more than any other club in the country. In addition, the Club has produced 377 full Otago representatives. Past University players have also been chosen as All Black reserves, New Zealand XVs, New Zealand B, New Zealand Development XVs, New Zealand Sevens, New Zealand Juniors, Colts, U20, U19 and Mäori teams, as well as representing other unions and Super 12 and 14 franchises throughout the country. These successes have not been limited to New Zealand, however, with past University players also having represented England, Scotland, Australia, South Africa, Manu Samoa, Fiji, Japan, Tonga, Hong Kong and Arabian Gulf.University A sides have dominated the Dunedin club competitions; to date the University Club has won the senior banner no fewer than 49 times, with University B also boasting a good record playing in the same premier grade for much of the team’s history. The University Club has also encouraged and developed women’s rugby, and the Club can already boast 12 Black Ferns amongst its players, along with 71 who have played for Otago. The women’s team has won the senior banner no fewer than 14 times, since its first premier win in 1991 (a year after women’s rugby commenced at the Club). The next best club has been Alhambra-Union with 3 championship banners.

The culture of success has extended throughout the Club, with many of the age group and women’s teams also dominating club competitions. When their playing days have ended and (inspired by a great love of rugby) many club members have moved into non-playing roles in rugby throughout New Zealand. These have included NZRFU presidents, All Black selectors and coaches, international referees, ORFU presidents, international development officers, and a variety of administrative positions associated with this fine game. The rugby club has played an important role in the history of the University of Otago, fostering and encouraging the talents of young men and women, enabling them to complement their formal education in a way that has helped many of them become world leaders in their chosen fields of work and endeavour. This is highlighted by the fact that a total of 18 University players have been awarded prestigious Rhodes Scholarships.
