Welcome to the renewed Wheelspin magazine – an exciting rejuvenation from our young editor and new exec member, Cory Saxton.

On the back of two very successful events (not including the successful autocross series this season, talk more about that soon) I must thank everyone involved in making these happen. The recent weekend’s hillclimb seen 35 entries, 4 runs, 2 showers of rain and not one off!! (a couple closeys eh Sam and Donovan, Donovan getting the driver of the day with a stunning 40.02s in the bog standard GT4 Celica). Round 2 of the Mikes Cars 2wd sealed championship will be held at Bethunes Gully on Sunday 7th February.

A big thank you to Mike Hosken for the time and energy spent running another great club rally and to all the competitors that entered and stayed on the hard stuff all day!! Another great Mikes Cars Lawrence Rally coming next year, so watch this space J. My contribution to the rally ended up with two flat tyres and a quick switch to the club ‘Safety Van’ for the last two stages... happy days!!

Looking forward... Jake and the team are rocking on with another Autocross at Dean McCrostie’s (thank you Dean) farm on the 20th December, this is the 3rd round of this season – all details are on the website or facebook.

There are a couple of major events coming up at our South Island circuits next month including Supertrucks in Timaru on the weekend of the 9th and 10th of January and later in the month, 23/24 January will see the tier 1 must see event at Teretonga with the Supertrucks also attending.

Happy holidays everybody and please have a safe Christmas, watch the ‘other’ idiots on the roads and if I can offer any tip – drive to the conditions and be patient. Also, sunscreen is a compulsory addition to any visit of a racetrack or autocross!

EDITORS NOTEHi all and welcome to my first issue of the Otago Sports Car Club, Wheelspin newsletter. The intention is to make this a quarterly publication.Of course with any newsletter, content is key, so thanks to those who have helped with stuff for this first one. Especially Becky Ladbrook for organizing most of this leaving me to fill in the blanks and allowing the use of her photos.Thought I’d tell you a little about myself. My parents are Graeme and Gail Saxton and my family have been involved with motorsport in various forms since before I was born. I began competing May last year when I bought a $400 de-reged Toyota MR2 that came with a set of rally tires, used it for a gravel autoX with the Queenstown Car club which prompted me to join the OSCC. Since then I have done 5 hillclimbs and another 2 autoX unfortunately killing the engine at Adam’s autoX.Recently I purchased a 1977 Isuzu Gemini (ex Malcolm Budd car) and have used it in the OSCC Lawrence Rally, which was my first rally.I had a great time and can’t wait for the next gravel event. Anywho...

CLUB CAPTAINS REPORTThe AutoX season has gone very well so far with two good events under our belt.

On the 1st of November we ran our season opener at Adams Property near Hindon. 45 entries made for a very action packed day with four full runs completed. Conditions were dry and dusty with some large ruts appearing in the later runs. Glenn Frew won this event in his white Evo, rumored to be nicknamed the Weasel, or is it the Stoat? Murray Laws was 2nd in his 4wd Mirage and a brilliant drive saw Scotty Paul slide his way to a popular 3rd overall in his SR20 Escort with too many doors. Meanwhile Ian Warren wore out the rev limiter in his Swift/Barina and Daniel-Son Cresswells coil lead fell off.

The 15th of November was round 2, McCrosties Autox #1 near Milton. 35 entrants turned up. Patchy weather was a pain but we did manage to complete four full runs. Glenn Frew took another outright win in the Ferret, finally getting a good dry run in his last attempt after unfortunately being caught out by small showers throughout the day. Tom Bond drove very fast and smoothly to 2nd in his WRX, having led the event after the first three runs. Brayden Palmer followed up his strong 4th place at the previous round with a solid third overall, and and even more solid speech “you 4wd guys had better pull your fingers out!” Top stuff Brady.
