We are excited to share this historic announcement with our alumni and friends. Our own Dr. Sam Kiehl and his wife Terry have made a generous $1M gift to our department to create an endowment to support our residency program. The department has been given permission by the College of Medicine and University Board of Trustees to match Dr. and Mrs. Kiehl’s amazing gift with our cash reserves to establish the Samuel J. Kiehl, III, MD, Chair in Emergency Medicine. As the first ever locally endowed chair of Emergency Medicine and one of only a handful of endowed chairs in Emergency Medicine nationally, this will create a sustainable endowment for the future of our residency program. In line with Dr. Kiehl’s wishes, the annual funds from this endowed chair will be used to enhance the resident curriculum of general wellness, and individual growth and development. Dr. Kiehl has been a long- standing faculty member in our department. However, what is not well known is that while he was serving as the Director of Emergency Medicine at Riverside Hospital in 1981, he and Dr. Doug Rund co-founded our emergency medicine residency program. Dr. Kiehl will tell you that the reason he joined our Department and continues to work here is because he loves working with our residents. Please join us in honoring Sam and Terry Kiehl and their amazing gift to our department and our residency program. Department Transitions

Over 40 years ago, Dr. Douglas Rund had a dream of starting an emergency medicine residency program at The Ohio State University. Through persistence and dedication, this dream became a reality. In 1983, the program graduated its first resident, Kendel “Ken” Kidwell, MD. Through the exemplary leadership of Doug and those who followed him, the residency program has produced 286 emergency physicians to date. In 1993, fellowship programs were added which to date have produced 17 fellows. Additionally, the program has inspired 340 OSU medical students to select emergency medicine as their profession.

Now we are poised to bring our emergency medicine family together through the formation of The Douglas A. Rund Emergency Medicine Alumni Society, an organization

dedicated to promoting the Department of Emergency Medicine, the specialty of emergency medicine and all those emergency medicine physicians enriched by our programs. To that end, we are offering membership to all resident and fellowship graduates of the department’s programs, the department faculty who contributed to their education, and all individuals holding degrees from The Ohio State University who have either worked in the department or who have entered the profession of Emergency Medicine.

The inaugural Board of Governors and slate of officers has recently been formed and will be presented during the OSU Alumni and Friends Reception at the ACEP Scientific Assembly on October 16, 2016. We look forward to seeing you there, or communicating with you either in person or through social media.

The OSU-EM Residency Program bids a fond farewell to a very talented class of graduates. These residents were the first class to experience the new Abercrombie & Fitch Emergency Department, helping us to open and grow into our new space. They were also the first class to participate in our new residency curriculum, which replaced traditional lectures with small group learning activities supplemented with on-line learning modules. We’re proud of our graduating class and all they accomplished during their time in residency. We’ll miss them, and hope they’ll stay in touch as we look forward to hearing about their future successes!

The OSU-EM Fellowship graduates have all accepted academic or administrative leadership positions. Dr. William Krebs and Dr. Michael Prats will remain as faculty in the department. Dr. Glenn Burns will assume the program leadership of the EM Residency at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Fairborn Ohio, while Dr. Tyler Dschaak and Dr. Sara Singhal assume Ultrasound Directorships. We wish them the best in their new positions!

WE WERE RECENTLY NOTIFIED that our Department will be receiving two large multi-year grants from the National Institute for Health (NIH). Both are substantial R01 grants, which will contribute to building our research capacity and enhancing the reputation of our Department. The first grant titled, “Urine antimicrobial proteins in older adults: aging, infection, & innate immunity” will be led by Dr. Jeffery Caterino. Dr. Mahmood Khan will lead the second study on “Trophic support to the heart by angiogenic cardiac patch.” Receiving one RO1 award is special, but to receive two at the same time is a real honor for the department. There are very few departments of Emergency Medicine in the U.S. with any NIH grant funding at all, and only a handful with two R01 type NIH grants at the same time. We are thankful to these researchers for their efforts and believe that these grants will contribute significantly to the national standing of our Department.

RESEARCH NEWS FLASH!

Former Ohio State University Emergency Department faculty member, James W. Hoekstra, MD was promoted from department chair to Vice President of the Wake Forest Network of Clinical Affairs in March, 2015.

Dr. Hoekstra’s promotion cleared the way for OSU residency program alum Chadwick D. Miller, MD [2003] to accept the position of Chair of Emergency Medicine and Executive Director of Emergency Services, a position he held on an interim basis since Dr. Hoekstra’s promotion.

Dr. Miller has developed recognition as a nationally known expert in research on patients with cardiovascular and pulmonary emergencies. He currently serves as the lead investigator for an NIH supported clinical trial on the use of cardiac MRI to evaluate patients who present to the Emergency Department with chest pain. He also co-directs the Critical Illness, Injury and Recovery Research Center (CIIRRC) at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, and is co-principal investigator of the Wake Forest Prevention and Early Treatment of Acute Lung Injury (PETAL) Network, a project funded by the NIH Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

Before arriving at Ohio State University for residency in 2000, Dr. Miller received a combined Bachelor’s-MD degree from Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine. He served as Chief Resident during residency before departing to take a faculty position at Wake Forest in 2003. Dr. Miller received a Master of Science degree in Clinical and Population Translational Sciences at Wake Forest University in 2009. As a faculty member of the Emergency Medicine Department at Wake Forest, he served as assistant residency director prior to accepting the leadership of the department’s clinical research program. From 2012-2015, Dr. Miller served as the Department’s Executive Vice Chair, working closely with Dr. Hoekstra to lead the department’s education, research, administrative and clinical missions.

Please join us in congratulating our fellow Buckeyes Drs. Miller and Hoekstra on their new positions.
