Dining By Design - 2011

Dining by DesignFall ‘10

The dining space braids together the re-claimed, neglected, discarded everyday materials at hand - cardboard boxes, paper tubes, plastic, plywood, rope, reclaimed metal chair frames - into a textile of wo-ven geometries. The dining experience is woven into a protective shelter. The inter-locking corrugated cardboard screens and columns form the embrace of home and community. The braided and netted rope chairs gather us around the wood ribbon, spring-leg dining table, whose clear glass table top calls us to our places in the nest.

The Chair

Four of the chairs were Marcel Bruer frames donated by our professor. The concept behind the chair was to take the idea of weaving, or mac-rame and explore the tension be-hind and below the seat and back to customize body comfort. I wanted to use the comfort and the struc-tural aspect of the macrame weave while using the visual aspect as well.

As the design developed in our project we wanted to experiment on how different positions of modules could allow for variation in space. Eventually these loops defined different private and public spaces. The residential space which is the most private space was assigned the open loop. One reason being this specific loop allows for a center courtyard space.

The site for the dormitory project is locat-ed in Brooklyn, NY. My partner and I want-ed the dormitory to be an extension of the Pratt campus. On ground level, there are art installations around the courtyard that invite the neighborhood to gather.

The single, double, and R.A. rooms, each have a personalized wall unit that contains all of the essential elements needed in a residential space - the bed, desk, closet, refridgerator, and extra shelves for books and other belongings.

Campus Dormitory Fall ‘09

The glass facade with steel bracing, al-lows each space to be visually connected to one another yet unable to be accessed. The central courtyard, being the focal point of the dormitory, brings all the in-habitants and visiting neighbors together.

The site for this project is located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, a predominantly residential neighborhood consisting of many schools and churches nearby as well as access to many transporta-tion hubs. The overall form was gen-erated while analyzing the site and studying different user scenarios.

Additionally, this studio explored natural structures as examples of built physical

models. We were able to use a scanning electron microscopes (SEM) to investigate an array of structures and their anatomy. These SEM studies led to highly devel-oped structural systems as well as pattern making using 3D modeling and scripting tools. To test our developed structural systems, modern technologies such as laser cutting and 3D printing were avail-able to help create physical productions.

important part of the process. Studying seprematism painting was one of the de-sign methods but also bringing the user up off the main datum of circulation. In or-der to do this, I introduced a vertical ramp that would provide a space for medita-tion. This ramp would eventually lead to the top floor with houses the chapel, an important part of the users everyday life.

The major program of the building is to provide temporary living accommodation for religious tourism groups or individuals on a pilgrimage to Rome from throughout the world. After experiencing the site one can come to the conclusion that the sur-rounding facades leave a lasting impres-sion with many material and color textures. Thus, when designing, the facade was an

AN UNRAVELING CUBE

An Unraveling Cube Fall ‘07

A cube that plays a game. The only way to open up the cube is to shift pieces around. It is a cube that transforms and unravels. The unraveling piece of the cube contains stoppers that can af-fect the shape of that overall piece.

The zig zag piece is shifted so the stop-per is released to allow for the planar pieces to open. This is repeated sev-eral times until the cube has tran-formed into a long snake like piece.
