Rens Bexkens was born in Almere on July 21st, 1987, where he spent a happy childhood with his parents, sister and younger brother. From the age of 10, he spent most of his hours playing soccer or futsal (indoor soccer). He gradu-ated from O.S.G. de Meergronden in 2005, at the same school where his father still teaches physics and chemistry.

After completing a bachelor of biomedical sciences at the University of Amsterdam in 2008, Rens started studying medicine at the same university. He enjoyed all aspects of student life. In 2012 he and two of his best friends spent 5 months in New York City, where his interest for scientific research started at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

After graduating in 2015, he and his wife Catelijne crossed the big pond as newly-weds to start a new adventure in Boston. From 2015 to 2017, Rens worked in the Sports Medicine Service at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he attempted to lay the groundwork for the Orthopaedic-Sport collaboration between Boston and Amsterdam, under the supervision of associate professor Luke S. Oh. During his time in Boston, Rens was remotely supervised from the Netherlands (professor Eygendaal, professor Kerkhoffs, and associate professor van den Bekerom) and from Down Under (Adelaide, associate professor Doornberg). Next to his work in the hospital, his days were filled with numerous visits to the Red Sox at Fenway Park, backyard BBQs at Luke’s house and city trips throughout the United States. After a once-in-a-lifetime experience of two years in which they enjoyed the United States to the fullest, Rens and Catelijne returned to the Netherlands.

While finishing his last articles, Rens started working in the Orthopaedic Depart-ment at Tergooi Hospital. Despite his special interest for musculoskeletal conditions, here he realized that becoming an orthopaedic surgeon would not be his dream. There-fore, he made the switch to the non-surgical specialties at MC Slotervaart in Amsterdam, to expand his clinical training while aiming for a residency spot to becoming a general practitioner.

Professor Eygendaal, beste Denise, dank voor de geweldige begeleiding de afgelopen 3,5 jaar. Destijds heeft mijn leven een onvergetelijke wending gemaakt; ik trouwde en vertrok naar Boston voor een promotietraject in het Sports Medicine Center van het MGH. Dank voor de begeleiding en jouw bezoek met Job. Samen fietsen door Boston en onze avond bij de Red Sox in Fenway Park zal ik nooit vergeten. Met als afsluiter een groepsfoto op het heilige gras!

Dr. Doornberg, beste Job, het USA-avontuur is gestart bij onze ontmoeting. Toen ik een coschap liep op de afdeling Orthopedie in het Tergooi Ziekenhuis enthousiasmeerde jij mij al voor een onderzoekstraject in Boston. Nadat de samenwerking met elleboogspe-cialist Luke Oh in het MGH was beklonken, stelde jij mij voor aan Gino. Het resultaat is dit proefschrift en een onvergetelijk avontuur. Bedankt voor jouw motiverende mindset, sturing bij onderzoeksprojecten en hulp bij beursaanvragen.

Alexander Kernkamp, wij hebben ongeveer een jaar samen opgetrokken in en bui-ten het ziekenhuis. Jij hebt mij geïntroduceerd in het biomechanische laboratorium (en wegwijs gemaakt met geek software als Rhinoceros en Geomagic) waarmee mijn proefschrift een krachtige impuls heeft gekregen. We hebben mooie avonturen beleefd. Kroegavonden, St. Patricks Day, boot feestjes, Sinterklaas en natuurlijk onze slappe kantoorhumor in het lab. Wat mooi dat jij mijn paranimf bent.

Jos Mellema, in het Sports Medicine Center bestond nog geen ingespeeld team van onderzoekers. Jouw begeleiding vanuit de Hand Service was cruciaal en heeft voor een vliegende start gezorgd.

Paul Ogink, dank voor je bijdrage aan onze studies. Jij was de enige Nederlander waarmee ik het over belangrijke zaken kon hebben zoals Tom Brady en de New England Patriots.

Osteochondritis dissecans of the capitellum is a debilitating elbow condition in which the (subchondral) bone and articular cartilage are affected. This condition primarily affects adolescent athletes engaging in sporting activities such as baseball, gymnastics and tennis. It may cause elbow pain, loss of motion and limitation of sporting activities. This thesis deals with current issues in the assessment and surgical management of this condition.
