Spring isjust around the corner but as I’m writing this more snow is forecast andthe outlook for next two weeks is very bleak, cold and wintery! I just hopeWMDC get their act together and keep the roads flowing should badweather hit us again.
The bad weather of January really did hit hard - local businesses acrossthe board suffered and many households were left financially short due tonot being able to get into work either because roads hadn’t been clearedor because someone had to be at home with the children because theschools were closed. In preparation for Marie Curie Cancer Care’s
Great Daffodil Appeal, we’d like the people of
in Ossett and Horbury to donate something a
little different this year. To help us turn our
streets yellow during March, we’re asking
you to volunteer just a couple of hours of
your time.
To continue our vital work, we need
volunteers to help with the 2010 Great
Daffodil Appeal around the Ossett and
Horbury area. On average, our volunteers
raise £80 from just an hour or two of
collecting, that’s enough to pay for four hours
of patient care from a Marie Curie Nurse.
Marie Curie Nurses provide free nursing care
to cancer patients and those with other
terminal illnesses in their own homes. Your
contribution will make a huge difference to

Are We Stressing OutOur Children?Recent reports in the news are suggesting that instead ofallowing our children to enjoy being children, manyparents are filling up their child’s free-time withstructured activities and groups and are literally stressingand tiring them out!
Personally, as a parent of a 12 year old daughter, I havemixed feelings about these reports. As a sociable onlychild, my daughter craved the company of other childrenand groups and activities were a means of socialising,since there was nowhere near home suitable for ayounger child to play safely. My daughter has always beenvery active and groups and activities were a great way forher to let off steam and keep active - definitely preferableto sitting in front of a tv or monitor. So yes, as parentswe’ve taken advantage of the many structured groups andactivities which are available locally and I feel that mydaughter has benefited greatly from them - she is a goodstrong swimmer because of swimming lessons; danceclasses have provided her with a hobby that keeps her fitand healthy with lovely posture and dance shows and alocal amatuer dramatics group have helped her aquire aconfidence to speak or perform in front of an audience.
For about 18 months she had an activity on 5 days outof 7, which, as the chauffeur, I found exhausting and tying,
and my daughter eventually found it too much - so wecut back to her favoured few groups.
As she’s grown older she now does fewer activitiesoutside school, but spends longer on them. But then shestarted at secondary school and signed up for variousclubs and activities on offer there! So we’ve come fullcircle and her diary is once again ‘full up’!
Is it a bad thing? Not necessarily - I would muchprefer my daughter spend her time active and interactingwith friends than sat in front of the tv, on the Wii orpermanently ‘chatting’ on Facebook or MSN. I supposeit’s like anything in life - the key is moderation andknowing when to stop or re-evaluate the situation andhow to recognise when your child is getting stressed orover-tired. Community Cafe - The Community Cafe held theirChristmas Party on Dec 23rd and was enjoyed by approx 80people. Santa gave out gifts. Colin and his wife Jean wereguests and Colin thanked everyone involved. The Community Cafe is now open as normal after closing fortwo weeks during the severe weather in JanuaryNew Manager - Chris Gasteen has now started as the newCommunity Centre Manager and is wished well in his new post.Centre Annual Dance - This will be held on Saturday 8thMay and is a buffet meal.
