The Brutal Artby Jesse Kellerman

Sucked into an investigation four

decades cold, Ethan will uncover a

secret legacy of shame and death, one

that will touch horrifyingly close to

home - and leave him fearing for his

own life.

The Suspicions of Mr

Whicherby Kate Summerscale

This true story has all the hallmarks of

a classic gripping murder mystery. A

body, a detective, a country house

steeped in secrets and a whole family

of suspects - it is the original Victorian

whodunnit.

The Gargoyleby Andrew Davidson

As she spins her tale, Scheherazade

fashion, and relates equally

mesmerising stories of deathless love

in Japan, Greenland, Italy and England,

he finds himself drawn back to life -

and, finally, to love.

When Will There Be Good

News?by Kate Atkinson

Detective Chief Inspector Louise

Monroe is also looking for a missing

person, unaware that hurtling towards

her is an old friend - Jackson Brodie -

himself on a journey that becomes

fatally interrupted.

The 19th Wifeby David Ebershoff

Bold, shocking and gripping, The 19th

Wife expertly weaves together these

two narratives: a pageturning literary

mystery and an enthralling epic of love

and faith.

The Bolterby Frances Osborne

Osborne tells the moving tale of

betrayal and heartbreak behind

Sackville's road to scandal and return,

painting a dazzling portrait of high

society in the early twentieth century.

Netherlandby Joseph O'Neill

Netherland is a novel of belonging and

not belonging, and the uneasy state in

between. It is a novel of a marriage

foundering and recuperating, and of

the shallows and depths of male

friendship. With it, Joseph O'Neill has

taken the anxieties and uncertainties of

our new century and fashioned a work

of extraordinary beauty and brilliance.

The Luminous Life of Lilly

Aphroditeby Beatrice Colin

Gripping and darkly seductive, The

Luminous Life of Lilly Aphrodite

showcases all the glitter and splendor of

the brief heyday of the Weimar Republic,

and the rise of Hollywood to its golden

age. As it foreshadows the horrors of the

Second World War, the novel asks what

price is paid when identity becomes

unfixed and the social order is upended.

Decemberby Elizabeth H Winthrop

A compelling, ultimately uplifting novel

about a family in crisis, showing the

delicate web that connects a husband

and wife, parents and children, and

how easily it can tear.

The Cellist of Sarajevoby Steven Galloway

Told with immediacy, grace and

harrowing emotional accuracy, The

Cellist of Sarajevo shows how, when

the everyday act of crossing the street

can risk lives, the human spirit is

revealed in all its fortitude - and frailty.

Ten publications have been chosen byTV hosts Richard and Judy fordiscussion in their book club on digitalchannel Watch. The books will befeatured from 21st January.

Ossett Trinity A.R.L.F.C. was formed inFebruary 1958 and because the club did nothave a clubhouse various public houses inthe Ossett area were used as headquartersup to the mid 90s. In 1995, a grant from thelottery and some funding from the localauthority provided sufficient finance forbuilding materials, which enabled the thencommittee, players and volunteers (includingprofessional tradesmen) to build the existingclubhouse, which was completed in 1996.An extension was added to the building and

completed early in 2008, the project beingfinanced through various fund raising effortsby committee, players and volunteers. Theplaying area and ground on which the clubstands are on long-term lease fromWakefield Metropolitan District Council. Theextension has provided an increased area tothe lounge, a well-equipped kitchen andbeer cellar and the clubhouse is now one ofthe finest facilities for sporting and socialevents in the area. Membership is availableto the general public.

Page 12: Ossett & Horbury Review Jan 2009

The Hostingley Farm free range turkey made

last year’s Christmas dinner a huge success,

and provided delicious succulent meat for

sandwiches for days afterwards.

Since we enjoyed the turkey so much, Lynne

Lindley persuaded us to try one of their free

range geese this year, and it definitely lived up

to expectation.

After careful consideration about whether I

could tuck in after seeing the geese running

around the field earlier, my arm was twisted by

hubby and daughter who prefer goose to

turkey anyway and the thought of potatoes

roast in goose fat clinched it!

Cooking the goose was left to hubby, who

made a sterling job of it. The goose has to be

roasted on a rack above the roasting tin, to

allow the fat (and there’s a lot of it!) to drain

away. We collected about two big bowls of fat

which we drained off, but it has to be said that

the goose didn’t taste the slightest bit fatty. It

has a lovely full taste, slightly ‘gamey’, but

thoroughly delicious, and the lovely crispy skin

was fought over before it had a chance of

reaching the dinner table - definitely naughtly

but nice.

The meat was much darker than turkey

breast, as you would expect, so that may put

some people off, but I can reassure you that

goose was a

great

alternative to

turkey for

Christmas and

I suspect will

be requested

next year.

Full marks

again to Hostingley

Farm and thank you

to Lynne for

suggesting goose.

PLANNING Avoid congested areasA little time spent planning your route can significantly reducethe time spent in the car. It’s arguably better to be on the move than stuck in heavytraffic.....plus it helps keep your blood pressure in check!!

PREPARATIONHave a clear out Remove all your unnecessary items from the back seat and inparticular your boot. Excess weight uses more fuel - an extra100lbs of weight can increase your fuel bill by 2%.Tyre PressureCheck your tyres to make sure that they are at therecommended level. Research shows that for every 6psi the

tyre is underinflated your fuel consumption increases by 1% -under inflated tyres can cause fuel consumption to increaseby as much as 6%.

ON THE MOVETake your time Harsh acceleration and heavy braking all contribute toexcessive fuel consumption and can consume up to 30%more fuel. Accelerate slowly and smoothly and then get intohigh gear as quickly as possible,Slow down Driving at a reduced speed will undoubtedly help with the fuelconsumption of your vehicle. As a rule anything over 3000revs makes your car less fuel efficient. Driving at 70mph asopposed to 50mph can consume 25% more fuel so reduceyour speed and drive steadily.Parking Parking the car is everybody’s least favourite manoeuver but ifyou can get into the habit of reversing your car into a parkingspace you could save fuel and money. Your car is far lessefficient when cold and consumes much more fuel whenreversing. Reverse into the bay when parking up so that youcan simply drive away forwards when you leave.Air ConditioningUse your air conditioner sparingly. Using you vehicle’s airconditioner on a hot summer day can increase fuelconsumption as much as 10% in city driving. At low speeds, opening the window will reduce fuel consumption by reducingAirCon use. At higher speeds however, using the AirCon maybe more efficient than the wind resistance from open windowsand sunroof.

MAINTENANCEServicingService your vehicle regularly. A poorly tuned engine can useup to 50% more fuel and produces up to 50% more emissionsthan one that is running properly. And clogged, dirty air filterscan cause up to a 10% increase in fuel consumption.Tighten the Fuel CapAlways tighten the cap to the second click to prevent fuelevaporating. It’s estimated that loose, missing or damaged fuelcaps cause 147 million gallons of fuel to evaporate every year.Happy and efficient motoring!
