Medieval and Post Medieval Landscape of
Ossett Township, by Richard Glover, has just
been released and contains details of local
place names, pull out maps showing historical
roads and trade routes and an interesting
account of how the early local settlers lived,
from the crops they grew to the ales they
brewed and where they buried their dead. Do
you know where the 1593 plague victims were
buried in and around Ossett?

LightChristmasPudding1lb Washed, Mixed Dried Fruit2oz Glace Cherries, quartered4tbsp Rum or Sherry1 Large Carrot, grated6oz Fresh Brown Breadcrumbs1tsp Grated nutmeg1tsp Mixed Spice2oz Brown SugarGrated Rind & Juice of 1 Orange & 1 Lemon1tbs Marmalade1tbs Black Treeacle3 large Eggs, well beaten
Put fruit and cherries in a large bowl and pour over ¼ pintof water. Simmer for 5 mins or microwave for 1 min(covered). Stir well as it cools and add fruit juices andrum or sherry. Leave overnight. Add the rest of theingredients, stir well and divide between 2, well greased,2 pint pudding basins with a greased circle ofgreaseproof paper in the bottom. Cover puddings withgreaseproof then foil and tie down firmly. Stand a trivet ineach of 2 large pans and fill to 1/3 full with boiling water.Cover pans and bring back to boil. Place puddings inpans adding more boiling water if necessary so that thelevel comes halfway up the sides of the bowls. Steam for5 hours, topping up pans with more boiling water fromtime to time. Store in a cool dry place. To serve steamagain for 2 hours.
Dark Secret Christmas Pudding
Sufficient ingredients for 2 x 1½ pint well greased pudding basins.Melt butter and add to remaining ingredieants in a large mixingbowl. Mix thoroughly. Stand a trivet in each of 2 large pans and fill1/3 full with boiling water. Cover pans and bring back to boil.Divide mixture between the 2 pudding bowls, cover with greaseproofpaper and pudding cloths, tie securely with string. Place puddingsin the saucepans, add more boiling water if necessary so the levelcomes halfway up the sides of the bowls, cover and boil for 6 hours.Top up with more boiling water if needed.Remove puddings from the pans and leave to cool. Replace thecovering with clean, greased, greaseproof paper & a clean cloth.Store in a cool dry place.To serve, boil the puddings in the same way for 2½ hours. Turnout onto a heated serving dish and serve with your favourite sauce.

The Ossett & Horbury Review
I have to put my hands up and say thatuntil a fortnight ago, I had never been to‘Redbrick’ at Batley and now it makes thetop five on my list of ‘favourite places tovisit’. It is fabulous and here are somereasons why. ‘Redbrick’ is an old Victorianmill on the Bradford Road betweenDewsbury and Batley. It has been stylishlyconverted into four fantastic floors ofhome furnishings, where you can buyanything from a candle or a greetingscard to a dining table or even a kitchenor a jacuzzi! There are a good range ofbusinesses in the mill - many names youwill recognise and some you won’t, butthey are all a joy to look round. ‘Heals’have some great ideas for gifts, including‘Molton Brown’ bathing products,cookery books, beautiful frames andhome brand foods, such as poshchutneys, jars of sweets, pates and olives.‘Mackay and Pearson’ provide acharming combination of stunningbespoke jewellery and personal service,whilst ‘Vintage home and gardens’ is justsimply a little shop of delights nestledaway on the top floor, selling exquisiteand unique kitchen and garden knick
knacks. ‘Bacchanalia’ is brilliant fortraditional house-hold goods, such ascutlery and crockery, but if you favourfunky designs ‘Ice Interiors’ stocks a greatrange of products, including ‘Alessi’(fingers crossed - one of their corkscrewswill be in my Christmas stocking thisyear…). Then of course, there’s ‘Christy’selling their luxurious towels at some greatprices and ‘Skopos’ who have anextensive range of beautiful upholsteredfurniture and accessories. I wish I had timeto mention all the other names at‘Redbrick’ because it is just the mostrelaxing, inspirational and exciting placeto shop in our region. Even my husbandquite likes it!
But if you don’t want to shop, it is just agreat place to go and wander around fora few hours or sit comfortably with coffeeand cake and a paper. There are fiverestaurants and cafes to choose from,each distinctive and offering a mouth-watering selection of food and drinks.
I will look forward to shopping at‘Redbrick’ this Christmas – convenient,stress free and enjoyable. Amazing!
