Oratorio Society of QueensMission Statement

Th e mission of the Oratorio Society of Queens is to engage, educate and uplift the Queens community by presenting musical programs that span the repertoire from great choral masterpieces to popular all-time favorites.

We are a community-based chorus and accomplish our mission by:

• providing our diverse membership of volunteer singers with joy-fi lled rehearsal and exhilarating performance experiences that expand their musical abilities, build community and richly contribute to the cultural life of Queens

• off ering opportunities for local high school and college students to learn music theory, voice production, stage presence and civic responsibility by attending regular rehearsals and performing with the chorus, professional soloists and orchestra

• presenting holiday and spring concerts which are widely-recognized as the premiere choice for Queens audiences who want to hear excellent choral music

GERALDINE MCMILLIAN, soprano, made her debut with the New York City Opera, as Mimi, in La Bohème in 1990, and returned there in 1994 as Cio-Cio San in Madama Butterfl y. Ms. McMillian’s close affi liation with this company began with its National Touring Company, singing Tosca and Th e Countess in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro. Her diverse repertoire includes the role of Monisha in Treemonisha with Opera Th eatre of St. Louis, Madame Lidoine in Poulenc’s Dialogue of the Carmelites with Central City Opera and Aïda, which has become something of a signature role. She has sung the Ethiopian princess to great acclaim with Nashville Opera, Memphis Opera, Boston Lyric Opera, Minnesota Opera and Opera Omaha. She has performed as Tosca with Pacifi c Opera Victoria, Minnesota Opera and Houston Ebony Opera where she also sang a memorable Suor Angelica in 1998. Other companies she has sung with include Nashville Opera, Connecticut Opera, Houston Ebony Opera Pacifi c Opera Victoria, Minnesota

Opera, Tulsa Opera and El Paso Opera. Highlights of her orchestral appearances include Gerswhin’s Porgy and Bess Suite with the Detroit Symphony, the NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg and Pacifi c Symphony Orchestra. Other orchestral appearances include the New World Orchestra in Mexico City, Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra, Orquesta Sinfónica del Estado de México, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Brooklyn Philharmonic, the Glendale Symphony, the Eesti Riiklik Sümfooniaorkester of Estonia, and the New Haven Symphony. A native of Connecticut, Ms. McMillian studied music at the Juilliard School.

PATRICIA CAY, mezzo-soprano, was born in Caguas, Puerto Rico. She started music studies at Escuela Libre de Mú sica School, earned a Bachelor’s degree from Manhattan School of Music and a Master’s degree from New York University. Patricia was also part of the Juilliard Opera Center as a young artist. She has participated numerous times in the Casals Festival and Festival Iberoamericano. She has been featured with the Virginia Opera, Opera de Puerto Rico, Opereta y Zarzuela de Puerto Rico, Teatro Lirico d’Europa, Orquesta Sinfó nica de Puerto Rico, Arturo Somohano Philharmonic, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Barcelona Philharmonic, Florida Philharmonic, and Trenton Symphony. Her operatic roles include Smeton in Anna Bolena, Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro, Annio in La Clemenza di Tito, Nicklausse in Les Contes d’Hoff mann, Hansel in Hansel and Gretel, and Carmen, among others. Patricia sang a series of concerts featuring songs by composers from Puerto Rico with the Festival Interamericano

in August 2013 in Puerto Rico, the Mozart Requiem with the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra in April 2014, and the role of Maddalena in Rigoletto with Teatro Lirico D’Europa in New Hampshire in October 2014. In August 2015, Patricia will be performing with the Costa Rica Symphony Orchestra in a tour around the country singing selections from Carmen, and in November 2015 she will be performing with the same orchestra in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony.

JOHN EASTERLIN, tenor, has established himself as one of international opera’s most compelling performers. He comes directly to the OSQ Spring Concert from his debut with the Hawaii Opera, Honolulu, in their new production of Sweeney Todd, as Adolfo Pirelli. He follows this with his return to Th e Town Hall in NYC for their celebrated concert series Broadway Unplugged in July. Next up: Mr. Easterlin makes his debut at the Phoenecia Festival in upstate New York, in the world premiere of Robert Manno’s new opera Do Not Go Gentle, followed by his return to the San Francisco Opera for their new production of Sweeney Todd, once again as Adolfo Pirelli. Highlights of his 2013-14 season included the U.S. premiere of Anna Nicole as Larry King; a return to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden for Wozzeck; his debut at the Kennedy Center in Th e Magic Flute; and Herod in Salome at Spain’s celebrated Merida Festival. A four-time Grammy Award winner, two-time Olivier Award recipient, three-time

Guinness Book of World Records holder, and two-time winner at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, his 2012-13 season was highlighted by the world premiere of Th e Perfect American by Philip Glass, in which Mr. Easterlin created the role of the iconic Andy Warhol. Th is landmark production received its international DVD and CD releases on the Opus Arte label in September 2013, receiving the 2014 Grammy Award for Opera Recording of the Year, as well as a second win as Best Featured Actor in a Musical or Comedic Film for Mr. Easterlin at the Cannes Film Festival in France.

C. DAVID MORROW, bass-baritone, makes his debut as soloist with the Oratorio Society of Queens. Most recently, he performed the role of Superintendent Budd in Albert Herring with Bronx Opera and Falstaff in the Salieri version with dell’Arte Opera. In the 2013-2014 season, he sang Méphistophélès in Faust with Hudson Opera Th eatre, as well as Baron von Hackenbock in Th e Rivals, the Podesta in La Gazza Ladra and Benoit in La Bohème with Bronx Opera. Other recent engagements include the title role in Th e Mikado with Trouper Light Opera Company, Casimir Popoff in Th e Chocolate Soldier, Sir Berkley in Der Vampyr with Liederkranz Opera and Ferrando in Il trovatore with MORE Opera, King Melchior in Amahl and the Night Visitors with Raylynmor Opera, Dulcamara in L’elisir d’amore with Divaria Productions and Monterone in Rigoletto with Opera Company of the Highlands.

OUR ARTISTIC DIRECTORDAVID CLOSE , is the Artistic Director and Conductor of Th e Oratorio Society of Queens and founder, Artistic Director and Conductor of Th e Orchestral Arts Ensemble of Queens. David is the Music Director and Conductor of the Great Neck Choral Society.Maestro Close studied conducting with John Castellini, founder and fi rst Music Director of the Queens College Choral Society, and Laszlo Halasz, founder and fi rst Music Director of the New York City Opera, and assisted Maurice Peress in the training of young conductors at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College. For many years, he served as conductor and vocal coach for the Queens College Opera Th eater under the direction of the distinguished American opera composer and conductor, Hugo Weisgall and has conducted performances for the Singers’ Th eater of Westchester, the Manhattan Opera, and the New York Lyric Opera and guest-conducted Summer Sings for the New York Choral Society

and the Masterwork Chorus of New Jersey. He was recently invited to conduct a choral festival for the Long Island chapter of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM). Th e 50th anniversary of the Queens chapter of the American Guild of Organists saw him leading the forces of the combined choirs in a performance that included a specially commissioned work by Queens-based composer, Bruce Saylor. David conducted in the National Choral Messiah Sing-In at Avery Fisher Hall in December 2012.David Close is the founder and Artistic Director Emeritus of Musica Reginae Productions, a professional classical music production arts organization in Queens. In the Summer of 2000, Maestro Close was invited to create and conduct “An Evening of Opera” for the gala opening night of the newly renovated George Seuff ert Band Shell in Forest Park with the voices and orchestral forces of Musica Reginae. Th at year, he also conducted, at the request of the Borough President, the Oratorio Society of Queens and the Queens Symphony Orchestra in a Millennial Concert at the Unisphere in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park. Maestro Close subsequently returned to Forest Park as guest conductor for a concert of the Queens Symphony’s Summer Park series.As a pianist, Maestro Close has appeared as recitalist and also as a collaborative artist in vocal and chamber music recitals. He regularly toured with the “Paul Whiteman Historic 1924 Aeolian Hall Concert” throughout the US and Canada. He also appeared as pianist in a performance of George Antheil’s 1929 succès de scandale, “Ballet mécanique” at New York’s Carnegie Hall.In addition to recital work as organist, Maestro Close has held posts at Holy Cross Episcopal, Brooklyn, Covenant Lutheran, Ridgewood, All Saint’s Episcopal, Bayside, St Th omas Apostle, Woodhaven. Maestro Close is an active composer and arranger, and is currently the Music Director and Organist at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in Forest Hills, and Organist at Temple Am Echad in Lynbrook.On July 22, 2015, Maestro Close will conduct “Christmas in July” as part of New York Choral Society’s Summer Sings program at Symphony Space on Manhattan’s upper west side. American AnthemAmerican Anthem, written by Scheer in 1998, was fi rst performed by Denyce Graves for President Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton at the Smithsonian Institution, launching President Clinton’s “Save America’s Treasures” initiative. Th e song was subsequently performed with the United States Army Band and Chorus at the opening ceremonies of the Millennium celebration on the Mall in Washington, D.C. Following 9/11, Denyce Graves performed American Anthem on Th e Oprah Winfrey Show and on Larry King Live. In June 2003, Patti Labelle and Take Six performed a new arrangement of American Anthem at a concert in Philadelphia, later aired on PBS. Th e song was also performed by Denyce Graves at the January 20, 2005 inauguration of George W. Bush. In 2007, the documentary fi lmmaker Ken Burns featured American Anthem (sung by Norah Jones) in the Emmy Award-winning World War II documentary for PBS, Th e War.

OSQ STUDENT CHORAL PROGRAMDid you see that young girl on the cover and our postcards and fl yers? Th at’s Brianna, and she’s one of our students in our Student Choral Program.

Th e ProgramStudents are awarded a scholarship to become part of the chorus for one year (students will be re-evaluated annually to renew their scholarship). All expenses – dues, music, tutorial assistance and access to master classes taught by professional singers – are covered by OSQ. Students will rehearse weekly with the chorus (September through May) and perform in two concerts accompanied by a professional orchestra.

RequirementsStudents must be full-time high school or college students in good academic standing, with a sincere interest in learning and performing choral music consisting of classical sacred music such as Handel’s “Messiah,” Mozart’s “Requiem,” Beethoven’s “Hallelujah” (Mount of Olives), holiday music and American spirituals and popular music. Students are required to have an audition to determine their voice range and placement within the chorus. Students must provide a short statement about their interest in choral singing, their past musical experience and their plans to continue to incorporate music into their adult lives.

Waltraut Bunge (known to us as "Wally") was a beloved part of theDanziger/Wenger family ever since arriving as a mother's helper to our family

in New York 50 years ago. Waltraut spent most of her working life as a bookkeeperand all along tremendously enjoyed participating in the hiking club and the

Turnverein. She also found great joy from singing with the Oratorio Society of Queens.

Waltraut lived a life of inspiring independence, yet always put others fi rst andworked tirelessly on whatever was needed. We have been so lucky to have had Waltraut

in our lives for so many years -- we call her our "fairy godmother."We will also remember her and will miss her dearly.
