Our Saviour Lutheran Church • Green Bay, Wisconsin 1 Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (Vol. 3, Issue 15) March 2010 What Do You Expect From God? by David H. Hatch That is a great question! Many expect that if we are good, work hard and put God first, He will bless us and we will have the fullness of life’s worldly treasures and “Easy Street”. That expectation may or may not be met. To some it has - to others, they may have become disillusioned with God, believing He has failed them in some promise of this expectation. “Where is God in this?” They ask. In our mind, has He failed us? Do we feel the emotions of anger, rejection, bitterness or disillusionment toward God? Did He let us down? Let’s ask, did He promise us life on Easy Street? We wish so. We want, and maybe even expect, life as a sitcom, with laughs and simple problems. There are laughs and there are problems, some simple, and some complex. Let’s remember Job in the Bible, he loved God dearly, yet still had troubles! The cool thing is that God was with him in his troubles and Job was steadfast in his faith during those troubles. Troubles are part of the human experience. No one really, Christian or not, lives on Easy Street. Jesus told us not to be surprised by trouble, yet to be of good cheer. He says, "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). We would be hard pressed to find a Scriptural promise saying that God will deliver worldly treasure and “Easy Street” under any condition, by our effort or not. “What do I expect from God?” This question places us at the center of the world itself, as if God is our butler, waiter or bellhop. If this is what we have thought, we have had it wrong. Have we asked the wrong question? Let’s reverse the question to this, “What does God expect of us?” In this question, God is in the center. There is a Scripture verse that speaks to this question. God expects five things of us, as follows, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, all your strength and love your neighbors as yourselves” (Mark 12:30-31). Consider the way we think and act, contrary to Him, how we have not met His expectations! That is called sin. What is His response to us when we have failed Him? Does He feel the emotions of anger, rejection, bitterness or disillusionment toward us, or something else? We know this: He offered a solution to our breaking His expectations. Join us on Good Friday for worship to find out the answer. Why, I bet you already know the answer (Smile). Once again, we relearn, He is at the center of our lives, not ourselves.

What Do You Expect FromGod? by David H. Hatch

That is a great question! Many expect that if weare good, work hard and put God first, He will blessus and we will have the fullness of life’s worldlytreasures and “Easy Street”. That expectation mayor may not be met. To some it has - to others, theymay have become disillusioned with God, believingHe has failed them in some promise of thisexpectation. “Where is God in this?” They ask.

In our mind, has He failed us? Do we feel theemotions of anger, rejection, bitterness ordisillusionment toward God? Did He let us down?

Let’s ask, did He promise us lifeon Easy Street? We wish so. Wewant, and maybe even expect, life asa sitcom, with laughs and simpleproblems. There are laughs and thereare problems, some simple, and somecomplex. Let’s remember Job in theBible, he loved God dearly, yet stillhad troubles! The cool thing is thatGod was with him in his troubles andJob was steadfast in his faith duringthose troubles. Troubles are part ofthe human experience. No one really,Christian or not, lives on Easy Street.

Jesus told us not to be surprisedby trouble, yet to be of good cheer. He says, "I have told you thesethings, so that in me you may have peace. In thisworld you will have trouble. But take heart! I haveovercome the world” (John 16:33). We would behard pressed to find a Scriptural promise sayingthat God will deliver worldly treasure and “Easy

Street” under any condition, by our effort or not.

“What do I expect from God?” This questionplaces us at the center of the world itself, as if Godis our butler, waiter or bellhop. If this is what wehave thought, we have had it wrong. Have we askedthe wrong question?

Let’s reverse the question to this, “What doesGod expect of us?”

In this question, God is in the center. There is aScripture verse that speaks to this question. God

expects five things of us, as follows,“Love the Lord your God with allyour heart, all your soul, all yourmind, all your strength and love yourneighbors as yourselves” (Mark12:30-31).

Consider the way we think andact, contrary to Him, how we havenot met His expectations! That iscalled sin.

What is His response to us whenwe have failed Him? Does He feelthe emotions of anger, rejection, bitterness or disillusionment towardus, or something else? We knowthis: He offered a solution to our

breaking His expectations. Join us on GoodFriday for worship to find out the answer. Why, Ibet you already know the answer (Smile). Onceagain, we relearn, He is at the center of our lives, not ourselves.

Do you have a wall calendar, apocket calendar, or a calendar onyour electronic gadget?

Planning is paramount in our livesfor many reasons. We plan vacationsor else we would not go anywhere. We plan for dinner or else we wouldnot have a meal. We plan forretirement or we willwork endlessly. Andwe can all improveon our planning.

We plan forsports events anddinner parties, forthings at the theatreand so on. We darenot miss them nor belate in arriving there.Back in October we planned forThanksgiving. In November weplanned for Christmas and NewYears. Now we may be planning for

summer.

One motto is, “Plan for tomorrowtoday”. That beats “Live in regrettoday for not planning yesterday.”

But it’s not too late to plan forsaving your seat at Holy Weekworship services. In the rush of our

brief lives, when ourfooting is set on theSavior’s path and ourmap is oriented toserving Him, settingaside a very fewhours out of our livesto retune our souls isa small sacrifice.

How aboutadding the Holy

Week worship times to your calendarand making a “Holy Intention” to jointhe family in worship? It will refreshyour soul!

Get in LineAminister waited in line to have his car gassed up

before a long holiday weekend. The attendant workedquickly, but there were many cars ahead of him. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacantpump.“Preacher,” said the young man, “I’m sorry about

the delay. It seems as everyone waits until the lastminute to get ready for a long trip.”The minister chuckled, “I know what you mean.

It’s the same in my business.”

Show and TellA kindergarten teacher gave her class a “show and

tell” assignment of bringing something to representtheir religion. The first boy said, “My name is Benjamin. I’m

Jewish and this is the Star of David.”The second boy said, “My name is Marvin. I'm

Catholic and this is the Crucifix.”The third boy got up and said, “My name is Tom.

I’m Lutheran and this is a casserole.”

Last WordsWilbur, Paul and Jim are sitting around talking.Jim says, “When you guys are in your casket and

friends and family are talking about you, what do youwant them to say?”Wilbur says, “I would like to hear that I was a

great doctor and a terrific family man.”Paul smiles, “I’d like to hear that I was a

wonderful school teacher and made a huge differencein the lives of hundreds of children.”Paul and Wilbur look over at Jim. “And what

would you like to hear them say?”Jim grins, “Look! He’s moving!!!”

The Point SystemCharles dies and goes to heaven where St. Peter

meets him at the pearly gates. St. Peter tells him heneeds 100 points to get into heaven.“Tell me the good things you’ve done in your life.

You get points depending on how good it was.”“Okay,” says Charles. “I attended church every

Sunday.”“Good. That’s two points. Go on.”“Well, I have tithed to the church all my life.”“Great! Another two points.”“Oh, gosh,” Charlie sighs, “This is tough. Ah, how

about this. I started a soup kitchen. I worked in ahomeless shelter for years. I donated blood to the RedCross. I served for years as president and treasurer ofmy congregation.”“Oh, that’s fantastic.” Smiles St. Peter, “Three points.”“Three points!” Charles cries. “At this rate, the only

way I can get into heaven is by the grace of God!”St. Peter smiles, “Come on in!”

Oh, Oh!In a land far away, a priest, a lawyer and an

engineer were about to be guillotined. The priest puthis head on the block. Guards pulled the rope.Nothing happened. The priest says he’s been savedby divine intervention and the guards let him go. Thelawyer puts his head on the block and again, the ropedoesn’t release. Claiming he can’t be executed twicefor the same crime, the guards turn him free. Theygrab the engineer and put his head into the guillotine. He looks up at the release mechanism and says, “Waita minute – I see your problem, I can fix that!”

Are You Scheduled toAcolyte? It’s an honor and deep privilege to serve as an

Acolyte during worship. It allows a person to spendtime in contemplative thought, “Closer to God”, thansimply sitting in the pews.

We thank our Confirmation students (and theirparents) for their faithful example in this ministry atOur Saviour. Students, remember, if you cannot bepresent at your scheduled time, it’s your responsibilityto secure another student to take your spot.
