Why Oshawa Remembers?
A lack of short and insightful audio stories told in the first person
The number of WW 2 veterans dying are 1,200 per month
It's time to tell the story
Core Deliverables
Engage the local schools, media and veteran associations to work colloboratively to produce 30 online stories on a Wordpress blog, local online newspaper and Internet archive site
Outreach to veterans to capture 2 to 3 minute audio stories and short video clips edited in Open Source Software
Deposit the resources and distribute under a Creative Commons licence
Success through Marketing
Front page articles in both weekly newspapers and delivery of content to online newspapers
Upload stories to http://www.archive.org, http://blip.tv, http://www.youtube.com and http://oshawaremembers.wordpress.com resulting in over 190 audio files and 100 main stories
Web 3.0 outreach campaign using Podcast,video and
blogging
Lessons Learned
The project used easy to learn tools to create and maintain the Wordpress site
Open source sound tools ie. Audacity 3.0
Word Press SiteEnhancement included CSS and extra audio storage.
Widgets use include Flickr API, RSS feeds, VodPod for Video feeds
Use of categories for effective searching
Legacy
The content is also archived at Internet Archive http://www.archive.org in MP3 format
Video is housed at YouTube and Blip.tv
Original content is provide to Community Radio via PRX http://www.prx.org
Offered to Legion Magazine in Wav format for online distribution
Distributed stories to storytellers on a CD
Results
Since it launched in November 2008 we have had over 3,200 direct hits on wordpress
The online stories in Audio Soundslide (SWF) format reported to have over 1 million hits per month
Over 265 stories uploaded to Http://www.archive.org
