FC Barcelona Asia Tour 2013:

QATAR AIRWAYS FLIES FC BARCELONA TO MALAYSIA AND THAILAND FOR TWO FRIENDLY MATCHES

Messi, Neymar, Xavi, Iniesta, and more, will star in a summer of passion and football during the club’s fifth visit to Asia. Thousands of fans on the continent are expected to head to stadiums in Thailand and Malaysia where the Catalonian club is scheduled to play two friendly matches during August.

The four-time Champions League winners are travelling courtesy of Qatar Airways, resulting from the recently established partnership between the two entities. The agreement also sees the 5-star airline graces the club’s main team strip, making Qatar Airways the first-ever commercial sponsor to appear on the Barcelona uniform.

The Asia Tour 2013 will include a match at Bangkok’s national stadium Rajamangala on August 7, against Thailand’s national team, and a second one at Kuala Lumpur’s Bukit Jalil stadium, on August 10, against an invitation side drawn from the country’s top-flight football league’s best players.

This year’s trip marks the first time Barcelona will appear in Malaysia, while the football club returns to Thailand following more than a decade since its previous visit.

Qatar Airways and FC Barcelona are very popular and well-known brands across Southeast Asia and the highly anticipated visits to both countries will give thousands of football fans in the region the chance to see their favourite stars showcase their talents right on their doorstep.

The pre-season anticipation is building, with fans across the world anxious to see Barcelona’s first team play, and both matches are expected to sell out.

Barcelona first toured Asia in 2004, playing four matches through South Korea, Japan, and China, ending with three victories and a draw. The following year, the first team returned to China and Japan playing club teams Yokohama Marinos and Shenzhen Jian Li Bao, finishing with a draw and a victory.

Following the success of these two visits to the Orient, the Barcelona team has toured on two other occasions. During the 2007 pre-season, FC Barcelona played both the Chinese and Japanese national teams. The most recent visit to Asia was in 2010, when the stars turned out against South Korea and China.

As airline partner, Qatar Airways has helped make this year’s tour possible by connecting the Barcelona team to their Asian fans and providing the means that allow the club to strengthen its bonds with its global family of supporters.

Since its inception, FC Barcelona has been known not only as a footballing organisation, but also for having a strong global community of support. This is why the ‘More Than a Club’ catchphrase, established in the late 1960s by club president Narcís de Carreras, also sees media attention on Barcelona focus beyond the sport itself.

The city of Barcelona has inspired the designs of the FC Barcelona shirts for the coming season, with new strips for both home and away games.

For the first time in their history, this season Barça will play in a new away kit that is based on the red and yellow colours of the Catalan flag, the Senyera. The away shirt features a yellow ribbed crew neck with a red trim, and mirrors the design of the home shirt, with the traditional stripes on the body and the modern graphic fade stripe on the sleeves, but in yellow and red.

More than a club, more than a shirt...

featured on the sleeves. The shirt also features a vibrant yellow v-neck collar to represent the Catalan flag, which is also fully integrated into the back of the collar. The Senyera’s red and yellow stripes also feature inside in the hem of the shirt.

Inside the back of the neck of both home and away kits is a luxury woven label featuring the club’s motto ‘més que un club’ (more than a club).

The kits are made from Nike's revolutionary recycled polyester; the shirt and shorts of each kit are made from up to 13 recycled plastic water bottles. This pioneering process, in which plastic bottles are melted down into a yarn that is then spun into recycled polyester, reduces energy consumption by up to 30% compared to manufactured polyester.

Both kits have a more athletic and dynamic fit thanks to the innovative programme led by Nike of scanning the bodies of some of the world’s best players to produce a design more tailored to the contours of their anatomy.

Explore ancient Rome

Autumn is the perfect time to visit Vienna for sightseeing. Average high temperatures fluctuate around 10–18°C, and as the temperatures drop, so do the hotel rates. Vienna is renowned for its opera, and the Vienna State Opera is one of the top opera houses in the world. The city is also known for its grand

palaces. The Belvedere’s two palaces and gardens, Schönbrunn Palace and the Imperial Palace, are well worth a visit. Outdoor attractions include Schönbrunn Zoo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s oldest zoo, and Donaupark, which features a giant chess board, skatepark, and a petting zoo.

Make your way up there on the city’s historic funicular railway, the Peak Tram.

Alternatively, take in sea-level views of Victoria Harbour from the iconic Star Ferry. Then explore Hong Kong’s early culture, history, and arts at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum before experiencing the city’s legendary shopping – from markets to malls, each shopping district offers a different experience.

WRIGLEY FIELDVenerable Wrigley Field is the traditional place to head for baseball matches in Chicago; it’s the second-oldest major-league ballpark in the USA. Home of the Chicago Cubs, it’s one of America’s more endearingly old-fashioned venues – the 1937 scoreboard is still operated by hand – and, because it’s small, you get good views of the action from just about anywhere. The ballpark also offers behind-the-scenes tours. You’ll catch superior team the Chicago White Sox, however, at the bigger, more commercial, and quite stunning US Cellular Field, where you’ll have a much better chance of bagging a ticket.

CITIZENS BANK PARK STADIUM The Philadelphia Phillies play at home between April and October at the rather beautiful Citizens Bank Park stadium (‘The Bank’ to locals), which has great views over the city skyline as well as the field. Plenty of family-friendly features include kids’ merchandise and play areas, while behind-the-scenes tours take in the dugout, Hall of Fame Club, and media and broadcasting rooms. The Bank is considered to offer the best food choices of any ballpark in America, ensuring fans never go hungry.

TOKYO DOMENo country beyond the USA has taken to baseball quite like the Japanese. Tokyo is home base to the generally dominant Yomiuri Giants, the oldest of the Japanese professional baseball teams. The Giants play matches at the 55,000-seat Tokyo Dome, nicknamed the Big Egg for its distinctive dome-shaped roof, and host to other sporting and concert events.

YANKEE STADIUMThere’s perhaps no better place to watch a baseball match than at the billion-dollar Yankee Stadium: not only are New Yorkers baseball mad, but the Yankees are by far the greatest-ever baseball team, with 27 World Series wins to their name. And you’re spoilt for choice in New York: The Mets play at Citi Field, where you can visit the Hall of Fame and do a tour.

The Izu Peninsula begins, almost incredibly, just over an hour’s journey by bullet train from Japan’s frenetic capital. Tokyo urbanites come here in summer to enjoy the beaches, go surfing, or relax with a round or two of golf. The serene cone of Mt Fuji is a spectacular backdrop, rearing up behind Izu’s bays and pine-topped hills like a mirage.

Atami is the gateway to the Izu Peninsula if you are travelling from Tokyo. It has a distinct small-town charm, and its traditional noodle shops are the place to try local buckwheat noodles in a wonderful broth made with dried fish, mushrooms, and kelp. Visit marvellous Kiunkaku for traditional Japanese architecture and gardens, curiously blended with a taste for mock Tudor.

Further south at Ito, Tokai-kan is a venerable old inn of darkened wood overlooking the river, where you can sit on traditional tatami mats and enjoy

superlative guri green tea, accompanied by chestnut pastries. Ladies can take a course at the inn and learn to apply the make-up and traditional attire of geisha.

The hills of central Izu were made famous in a story by Nobel Prize-winning author Yasunari Kawabata, The Dancing

Girl of Izu. Here you’ll find forests, small wasabi farms, valleys of delicate flowers, and scenic waterfalls such as the 25-m Joren Falls.

Numerous hot springs bubble up around the Izu Peninsula, and both coast and interior are dotted with hot-spring resorts. In Ito, guests at Yamatokan Onsen can wallow in individual baths or enjoy the communal open-air baths set in orderly gardens. At Osawa Onsen near Matsuzaki, you can bathe surrounded by rice paddies as steam rises around you. And at Shuzenji, you’ll find Izu’s oldest onsen resort in a tranquil setting of bamboo groves nestled beside the tumbling Katsura river.

Viennese-born Max Hollein, the director of three Frankfurt museums, two of which are on the Sachsenhausen side of the Main river, was surprised to learn that Frankfurt is divided into rival camps: those citizens who live in Sachsenhausen and those who do not.

Offering prime views of the high-rise skyline and plenty of room for sunning oneself on the riverbank, Sachsenhausen greets visitors from the ‘other side’ with an impressive row of stately villas and architectural monuments, most of which serve as museums.

“For a city of its size, Frankfurt offers enormous cultural richness,” says Hollein, the director of the 1 Städel, the2 Liebieghaus, and the Schirn museums.

Hollein frequents an Austrian restaurant right on the river called 3 Lohninger. He met the chef there when working in New York. “I like the schnitzel, but the goulash is certainly the best,” says Hollein. “I take any artist who visits us to eat at Lohninger. Often, the artist returns secretly the next day.”

Hollein appreciates Sachsenhausen’s communal feel and has come to think of vicinity as a virtue. “Almost everything is walking distance.” Schweizer Strasse is the neighbourhood’s main thoroughfare. There you will find a typical apple-wine restaurant

called 4 Zum Gemalten Haus. “I like the painted walls. When I bring foreigners here, I order tongue, liverwurst, and blood sausages. Everyone says, ‘Is that really what it looks like?’”

To work off that lunch, how about a stroll along the river? Hollein recommends working your way in the direction of 5 Niederrad, where crowds are thinner

and you’ll come upon a tiny island frequented by sunbathers.

Not a big shopper, Hollein can’t avoid one shop located on Laubestrasse – that of his wife, fashion designer 6 Nina Hollein. She sells her own clothes for women and children. On nearby Brückenstrasse, shoppers will find other small stores run by designers, along with inviting cafés.

Every second Saturday, shoppers can browse through the junk (and perhaps a few treasures?) at the riverside flea market and take an elegant lunch at restaurant

If you prefer a longer walk or a short bike ride, another Sachsenhausen fixture is 8 Gerbermühle restaurant along the river

in the direction of Offenbach. According to Hollein, it was one of Goethe’s favourites.

Max Hollein can be credited as a major

cultural force in the city, bringing blockbuster

museum exhibits and a constant stream of

artists to the banking metropolis. Born in 1969

in Vienna, he worked at the Guggenheim

in New York before moving to Frankfurt

and overseeing the expansion of the Städel

Museum’s collection and the doubling of

its exhibition space. “Sachsenhausen has

a great urban feel, with interesting shops

and restaurants. At the same time, it’s very

residential. It feels like a community.”

As the capital of Indonesia – an archipelago of over 17,000 islands – Jakarta’s culinary landscape is certainly diverse and often dizzying to say the least. Underground Secret Dining affords adventurous foodies the opportunity to experience the city’s local flavour on an intimate level, organising regular food events in ‘secret’ venues to savour secret recipes by guest chefs or a humble housewife.

The price of admission is Rp.150,000 (US$15). You may be in for world-class fare or charming homemade comfort foods from some far-flung corner of the archipelago. In either case, the mission of Underground Secret Dining is a noble one.

Aside from educating Jakartans and tourists alike in the diversity of regional Indonesian cuisine, these events help support local restaurant-owners and home cooks by introducing them to potential new patrons. Venues in the past have included galleries, public

parks, floating decks, and high-rise apartment buildings.

Each event is limited to 40 people for an intimate experience. Organisers will call for attention at the venue and describe the dishes prepared. On occasion, traditional music will match the food, as was the case during a Bali-themed event complete with angklung accompaniment.

This new style of dining for those craving a unique experience is trending in big cities all over the world from Shanghai to São Paulo and has been brought to Jakarta by Lisa Virgiano and Sari Hartono, a pair of foodie friends since high school.

Gucci loafer legacy Florence – Permanent exhibition A dedicated exhibit at Gucci Museo narrates the legacy of the Gucci horsebit loafer – from its origins up to the modern day, with styles from the past six decades. The horsebit loafer made its debut in 1953 when Guccio Gucci’s son, Aldo Gucci, expanded his family’s business with the incorporation of footwear – sealing the fate of this style as the most iconic Gucci shoe ever made. Gucci Museo celebrates an iconWords by Karen Martin

Joana Vasconcelos Until December 15, 2013In a temporary exhibition on loan from the Pinault Collection, Gucci Museo presents three works from Portugese artist Joana Vasconcelos: Red Independent Heart (2010), Psycho (2010), and Lavoisier (2011). Joana incorporates traditional Portuguese crafts such as crochet, filigree, and ceramics into her work, which is characterised by a decontextualisation of the familiar and the deconstruction of how we identify things.

Situated in the heart of Florence, the city where Gucci’s story began, Gucci Museo takes visitors on a journey through the history of the brand. From its humble beginnings as a Florentine artisan leather company founded by Guccio Gucci in 1921, the collection now ranges from clothing, accessories, and homewares to special-edition cars customised by Gucci.

The museum is divided into the varying themes of the Gucci brand, inspired by iconic motifs and symbols throughout the years. 2013 marks the 60th anniversary of the Gucci horsebit loafer, and an exhibition is dedicated to the iconic shoe, including the versions made famous by Madonna at the MTV Music Video Awards and by Brad Pitt in the 1999 film Fight Club.

As well as permanent collections, the museum also features contemporary art installations, and the private basement houses the vault that contains the Gucci archive, conserved to document the house’s heritage. www.gucci.com

Free events on the South BankYou don’t need to dart around London to find

things to do. Exit Waterloo station on foot and

within minutes you’ll be on the bustling South

Bank and in the midst of living statues, live music

performances, temporary exhibitions, art

installations, and more. The Southbank Centre

is famed for its great festivals, many of them

free. Until Sunday September 8, the Southbank

Centre is celebrating 75 years of The Beano

comic by creating Beanotown – a Beano

neighbourhood featuring a Beano museum and

social club. Events include drawing workshops led

by The Beano illustrators and sessions revealing

the history of Dennis the Menace’s pranks,

complete with demonstrations. Also until

September 8, Danish artist Jeppe Hein’s

Appearing Rooms Fountain returns after

a break last year due to drought. Walls of

water rise and fall randomly to create a series

of constantly changing ‘rooms’. See if you can

run in and out without getting splashed!

For some of London’s most revered institutions, head to the museums of Exhibition Road (South Kensington underground station), where you’ll find the Natural History Museum, Science Museum, and the Victoria & Albert (V&A) Museum all in close proximity.

First off we go to the Science Museum, which is the one I’m most excited about, and by the shrieks we can hear when we step inside I’m not the only one. The family-friendly galleries range from space exploration to medical science, inventions to genetics, and it’s one of the most hands-on museums we visited. As you explore the museum you’ll come across actors playing characters from history. The 19th-century electrical pioneer Michael Faraday had us engrossed in his cutting-edge electrical experiments, but you might also bump into physicist Albert Einstein, Yuri Gagarin, the first person in space, or pioneering aviator Amy Johnson.

Next door is the Natural History Museum, and anyone who went there in their own childhood will remember ‘Dippy’, the affectionately named Diplodocus replica skeleton in the lobby, and he’s still as popular with visitors today as he was when he was revealed to the public over 100 years ago. Fast forward a century and you can now come face to face with a roaring, moving adult T-Rex, as well as several other animatronic dinosaur models. The sight of every imaginable stuffed animal – current, endangered, and extinct – had lots of little noses pressed to the glass in wonder, and the animal, plant, and geological treasures in the hands-on Investigate science centre also had children captivated.

Just opposite the Natural History Museum is the V&A, the iconic art and design museum that is a favourite of mine purely for its fashion galleries and exhibitions. But fashion is only one part of its expansive collection, with dedicated sections for books, dance, furniture, architecture, prints, Islamic and Middle Eastern collections, and more. And that’s the beauty of it – you can just pick the area that interests you and explore. Family-friendly events and workshops make the visit all the more fun, and during the summer holidays kids can pick up the activity and materials of the day and then go around the museum to get inspiration before drawing or making their idea.

From southwest London to southeast, the museums that make up the Royal Museums Greenwich can be explored in a day. Climb aboard Cutty Sark to walk the decks and venture underneath the last surviving tea clipper that sailed the world over a century ago. Continuing the maritime theme, the National Maritime Museum is a short walk away, where Yinka Shonibare MBE’s huge sculpture Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle stands outside. We decide to focus on the Royal Observatory, where time began.

Up the hill through beautiful Greenwich Park, we reach the Royal Observatory. From here it feels like we’re out of the city, although the familiar skyline can still be seen nearby from the vantage points. In the Meridian Courtyard you can stand across the Greenwich Meridian Line, a foot either side on the eastern and western hemispheres. If you happen to be there just before 1pm, look out for the Time Ball rising up its mast and dropping

Gone are the days of stuffy museums and ‘Do not touch’ signs. London’s best museums are popular because of their emphasis on fun, with interactive, hands-on exhibits, and family-friendly trails and activities.

All things money related can be found at the Bank of England Museum, at the aptly named Bank station. Here you can lift a genuine gold bar, and ‘The Pound in Your Pocket’ exhibition tackles the topic of inflation through a series of interactive exhibits. The centrepiece of the exhibition involves taking the controls of a balloon and chartering it on a stable course, to simulate the role of the Bank in keeping inflation steady.

There are hundreds more family-friendly museums in the capital, from special interest to the lesser known and the obscure. And of course there are the museums that we will continue to visit again and again, whether it’s for their ever-changing temporary exhibitions or for our favourite permanent collections that we will never tire of.

at exactly 1pm – you can literally set your watch by it! Inside the Planetarium a Royal Observatory astronomer took us on an amazing tour of the night sky. Throughout August the museum is exploring all things alien, with an exhibition and planetarium show that question whether we are alone in the universe.

A walk along the south bank of the Thames reveals several museums, which we discover whilst wandering between Waterloo and London Bridge stations. Just west of London Bridge you can experience Tudor life aboard Golden

Hinde II, a full-sized reconstruction of Sir Francis Drake’s Tudor galleon, with costumed guides and events such as Tudor fun days and battle workshops during the school holidays. Between London Bridge and Tower Bridge, HMS Belfast offers an insight into life on the warship during the Second World War, with rooms made up like they’re still in use.

Further along, east of Tower Bridge along Shad Thames, is the Design Museum, celebrating the world’s best designs. Budding designers aged 5 to 11 can try their hand at the Design and Make workshops, and older children might enjoy the thought-provoking ‘United Micro Kingdoms’ exhibition, which imagines a fictional future England devolved into four self-contained counties, each free to experiment with governance, economy, and lifestyle.

If you are heading to Covent Garden, then the London Transport Museum is worth a quick visit. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the London Underground, and the museum has a section on how the London Underground was built, plus buses, taxis, and trains from past and present.

Neo-Gothic elegance

I love everything about this building. Originally

designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the

1870s, the neo-Gothic-style hotel has been

beautifully restored and updated, retaining all

the romance, grandeur, and style of the Victorian

railway hotel. The hotel lobby stands where

Victorian high society once alighted from

horse-drawn cabs, and in the Booking Office bar,

the former ticket hall adjoining St Pancras

Station, you can still imagine the bustle of

arrivals and departures.

Pop-ups

They may not be the latest thing on the London

scene, but I think pop-ups are more than a fad.

I like their immediacy and transitory nature,

plus I’m a big fan of supporting start-ups and

local independent businesses. Pop-ups can range

from restaurants, bars, and shops to creative

workshops and even outdoor film screenings, and

I usually hear about them via social media sites.

Picture-perfect charm of London villages

I grew up in the suburbs, so I like my city with a

neighbourhood vibe and an air of arty bohemia

– if it’s got a farmers’ market, an artisan bakery,

an independent coffee shop, and an array of

boutiques then I’m happy! Blackheath has a

picture-perfect charm, with numerous boutiques,

butchers, bakers, delis, and a weekly farmers’

market providing a rural village feel, and the

heath itself is a lovely open space in the city.

At the time, I was working for a magazine in Shanghai, and we were desperate to escape the damp cold that passes for wintertime in that eastern Chinese city. We hired a Proton Saga, the most iconic vehicle ever produced by the country, launched by ex-PM Mahathir Mohamad in 1985, and navigated our way around using a free tourist fold-up map the car company had given us – these days we’d use our iPhone – which listed the main highways, but little else. We began our journey, as most tourists do, in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.

Affectionately known as KL, the city of six million is booming like never before, with cranes covering the horizon and tourists visiting in their millions. While a remarkably green city, with splashes of lush jungle separating intense pockets of development, Kuala Lumpur is also notoriously difficult to navigate. While in a way it’s refreshing that local planners chose to go around the hills rather than through them, it’s created an often incomprehensible network of roads that resembles a strewn bowl of Hokkien mee (delicious local noodles). Thank goodness, then, for the KL Hop-On, Hop-Off City Tour, which takes away the hassle of getting around, and shows you the very best this city has to offer.

Running every 30 minutes, from 8.30am to 8.30pm seven days a week, it takes you on a 2.5-hour circuit of the capital, passing nearly every major tourist landmark along the way. Because of its roundabout route, there will probably be a stop close to your hotel – such as stop number six on Bukit Bintang. Literally meaning Star Hill, it’s the most prestigious shopping street in KL,

full of mammoth malls like Pavilion, Berjaya Times Square, Sungei Wang, Lot 10, and Fahrenheit 88. With 23 stops in total, a standard 24-hour adult ticket for the KL Hop-On, Hop-Off City Tour costs RM38 (US$12), while 48 hours’ validity costs RM65 (US$30).

Sometimes, the heat of KL can be exhausting, which is when it’s time to head north from the city and follow the winding road to the cooling climes of the Cameron Highlands. Wherever they went, the British built hill stations. Lofty retreats from the summer heat, they appeared across India, Sri Lanka, Hong Kong, and Malaysia. In the latter, the occupying colonials founded small settlements on Penang, and Fraser’s and Maxwell Hills. However, the granddaddy of them all is the Cameron Highlands.

First ‘discovered’ by British surveyor William Cameron in 1885, the verdant green plateau now known as the Cameron Highlands lay undeveloped for 40 years, until a decree changed all that. Within a decade, impenetrable jungle had been replaced by a golf course, cottages, inns, a dairy, nurseries, vegetable farms, and tea estates. Fondly referred to as ‘Little England’, today the Cameron Highlands provide a calming retreat from the tropical heat for locals and tourists alike.

Another popular escape is the island of Langkawi, in the very northwest of Malaysia. With its excellent infrastructure, memorable food, and notably green ambition, there’s never been a better time to visit the island of the red eagle, as it's known. Opened in 2003, this 2.2-km-long ride carries you almost to the top of the Machincang mountain, located some 708 m above sea level. From these lofty heights, you enjoy 360˚ views of Langkawi and its numerous surrounding islands. When you do reach the top, make for the vertigo-inducing, 125-m-long SkyBridge, a curved suspension bridge that hangs more than 100 m above ground.

“By George, it’s pretty,” Captain Francis Light, the British founder of the capital of Penang, George Town, probably didn’t say upon sighting the island. Located due south of Langkawi, the modern state that exists today was then not much more than a sparsely populated, jungle-covered isle ripe with opportunity. In the 225 years since, Penang has undergone a remarkable transformation – from remote tropical outpost, to commercial jewel of the British Empire, to a global centre of IT and tourism.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, historic George Town is home to a remarkable assemblage of architecture, with Western and Oriental influences that reflect its past as an important trading outpost in the British Empire. In recent years, the government has cleaned the streets; spruced up the sidewalks; planted trees; renovated religious buildings such as the 180-year-old Toi Shan Association, a Chinese ancestral hall and temple in the city’s Little India, and the 19th-century Kapitan Keling Mosque; and encouraged the renovation of derelict shophouses as cafés, restaurants, art galleries, and boutique hotels. The result has seen an influx of tourists from around the world – much like Malaysia itself. As the tourism slogan goes, this magnificent multicultural country is ‘Truly Asia’.

Bird Park (klbirdpark.com) is an excellent

place for the entire family. If you do visit

as part of the tour, remember to buy the

discounted tickets sold by staff on the bus,

as it’ll save you a few ringgit you can spend

on lunch later. The huge free-flight walk-in

aviary houses thousands of birds, including

free-roaming peacocks, storks, egrets, and

ibises, while there are separate displays of

parrots, hornbills, flamingos, and even emus.

Our two-year-old son absolutely loved the

place, pointing out, “One more! One more!”,

until he became so over-excited that he had

to take a rest in the buggy. With the buses on

a half-hourly schedule, you don’t have to wait

long for the next one to arrive – we only had

to wait five minutes.

This popular Malaysian holiday island has two

claims to fame that continue to be hyped by media

and marketers. One, the dramatic topography of

this teardrop-shaped isle in the South China Sea

Thaipusam

Usually held in late January or early February,

the amazing spectacle of Thaipusam draws tens of

thousands of tourists and locals to the Batu Caves

just outside of Kuala Lumpur. They throng the

natural outcrop to watch as Hindu devotees, with

their bodies pierced in a variety of inventive and

painful ways, carry a heavy kavadi (the Hindi

name for a wooden platform that can weigh up to

90 kg), as they walk up the 272 steps to the temple

inside the caves. According to orthodox doctrine,

there is a month-long period of fasting prior, when

adherents can only eat milk and fruits – the

abstinence is meant to help fortify the senses

and suppress passions – achieving control of

Gustav Eiffel and for the world flags showing how far each country is from the tower and in which direction it lies. After we’ve worked out how far we are from home, we amuse ourselves by pointing out the sights we’re going to be visiting over the next few days.

One of those sights is the Jardin des Plantes, a botanical garden offering so much family fun it’s almost a weekend break in itself. The boys always dash first to its Dodo Manège, a carousel with a parade of extinct and endangered animals to ride, from a triceratops to a Tasmanian wolf – as usual, the boys simply can’t decide and we end up spending a small fortune for them to ride just about every creature. When they’ve finally exhausted its charms, we ogle some real animals in the Jardin’s mini- zoo, founded in 1794 to rehouse the inhabitants from the royal menagerie at Versailles together with creatures rescued from street entertainers.

Together, these leave us little time to play in the Jardin’s sprinklers, tackle its maze, and explore the venues dotted around it that make up the mighty Musée National d’Histoire Naturelle. Our favourite among these is the splendid glass-roofed Grande Galerie de l’Evolution with its stuffed animals and interactive children’s gallery. Neighbouring buildings reveal to us skeletons, preserved organs, shells, and fossils (Galeries de Paléontologie et d’Anatomie Comparée) and sparkling giant crystals (Galerie de Minéralogie et de Géologie). Exhausted by this big day out, we seek sustenance in the nearby Grande Mosquée de Paris, one of the largest mosques in all France – its courtyard tea-room revives us with pastries, ice cream, and mint tea (there’s also a restaurant).

The boys, never sated when it comes to wildlife, are intrigued to learn that Paris had yet another menagerie, set up under

Arriving in the midst of a canicule – a heatwave – we discover there’s so much more to Paris’s al-fresco scene than one might anticipate, and though many Parisians have decamped to the coast, as is customary in August, there’s still a fabulous buzz to the city.

At Paris Plage, a 3-km beach created on the banks of the Seine for the hottest four weeks of the year, my husband and I fling ourselves on loungers arrayed beneath a palm tree while our sons plunder the ice-cream stalls, play boules, and tackle the climbing wall. Only when they’ve worked up a real sweat do we steer them in the direction of the nearby Piscine Joséphine Baker, a floating swimming pool with a roof that retracts in summer, plus a paddling pool, a spa, and a hammam.

It’s tempting to spend our long weekend enjoying a Seine-side holiday, but the rest of Paris beckons. A visit to the Eiffel Tower has become a family ritual, but it’s a repeat visit I can stomach more easily now you can book tickets in advance, avoiding the hours-long queues. We head for the first level to grab one of the Gus quiz-trails that have the kids following yellow footprints to themed information boards. But there’s nothing to beat taking the second lift right to the top – for the views, naturally, but also for the schlocky waxwork tableau featuring

Napoléon III in the Bois de Boulogne in the leafy far west of the city. They’re even more fascinated to find out that it became a human zoo (from 1877 until 1912, known as l’Acclimatation Anthropologique), exhibiting African bushmen and other ethnological ‘curiosities’. All that remain to remind us of this history are another mini-zoo and farm, but they’re part of the bewitching Jardin d’Acclimatation, an old-fashioned amusement park where the boys delight in an enchanted river ride, a vast paddling pool with cooling mist machines, a puppet theatre, pony rides, and the Musée en Herbe children’s museum of art and science.

The following day sees more outdoor action, this time of an unplanned nature. The Louvre is great to visit (self-guided family tours help get the most out of it with kids), but the highlight for the boys turns out to be racing around its courtyard with its glinting glass pyramids, pools, and fountains, then playing hide-and-seek amidst the sculptures of the adjoining Jardin des Tuileries and riding its donkeys and carousel until they’re dizzy.

Paris seems inexhaustible in terms of what it offers families. We, on the other hand, fall asleep each night within seconds of our heads hitting the pillows, heads full of sunlight bouncing off water and glass, dreams populated by exotic animals and prancing puppets.

CULTUREEid Al FitrRamadan is followed by the three-day public holiday of Eid Al Fitr. Check daily newspapers for details of special events organised in shopping malls, at Katara Cultural Village, and on the Doha Corniche. The first day of the holiday is celebrated in the evening with a spectacular display of fireworks over the waters of Doha Bay, best viewed from the Corniche.

EXHIBITIONThroughout August at the Museum of Islamic Art [MIA]. Steel and Gold – Historic Swords from the MIA Collection. A presentation to show swords not as weapons but as historical artefacts and masterpieces of intricate design. The MIA is also offering guided tours, in both English and Arabic, of its outstanding collection of objects spanning more than 1,000 years and three continents. Before oil production began 60 years ago, the population was around 25,000; now it nudges 1.9 million, and continues to grow as the country expands. For centuries, nomadic Bedouin wandered the gravelled plains of the interior with their sheep and camels, while coastal people fished for pearls – the main source of Qatar’s pre-oil wealth.

The foundations of the modern Qatar state were laid by Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, ancestor of the present ruler. The fast-growing capital, Doha, encircles a wide bay and features buildings designed by some of the world’s best architects, numerous parks, as well as lovingly preserved traditional architecture.

The small peninsula of Qatar is the only true desert country in the world, with no natural surface water but featuring a 563 km-long coastline with fine sandy beaches and majestic rolling dunes in the south.

Distinctive turquoise metered taxis with various coloured

roofs are found outside hotels and malls, or hail one

on the street.

Karwa public buses are comfortable, clean, and cheap. Bus stops display timetables;

buses run approximately every 15 minutes.

During Ramadan, sohoor buffets are available across Qatar until 2am. Visitors not observing Ramadan will be accommodated discreetly at most hotels and also within cafés in the shopping malls.

The W Doha sohoor commences at 9pm and you can book a cabana at Wahm poolside lounge, where a trio of musicians accompany the Arabic à la carte menu and signature shisha menu.

The Four Seasons’ Ramadan nights extend into the early hours of dawn as the sound of the Orient, played with the soothing oud, creates a convivial atmosphere at their Ramadan tent at Al Mirqab ballroom.

The sun will rise during Ramadan from around 4.45am to just after 5am towards the end of the holy month. Stroll along Doha’s Corniche to welcome the new day and watch West Bay light up in the dawn.

Suffering from jet lag? Then head to the Ritz Carlton Hotel’s luxury spa, which opens early so you can enjoy its fitness centre, swim lengths in the indoor pool, or simply relax in the Roman baths.

Starting after maghrib (sunset) iftar, the breaking of the fast, is a time of celebration with friends and family. Dine at the Al Sayyad Ramadan Tent at the Diplomatic Club, which offers charming views

of the Pearl, or head to the Hilton Doha’s Hakawi Tent, for a feast which includes live cooking stations, 14 rotating main dishes, special Ramadan drinks, and delicious date-based desserts.

• Flying dehydrates the body, leaving you tired and irritable, so drink a lot of water when you fly. I recommend this formula: take your weight (in lbs) and divide by two. This is how many ounces of water to drink when you are flying. For example, a person weighing 140 lbs (63.5 kg)* should drink 70 oz (2 litres) of water throughout the day.

• If your mind is very active, take a few minutes to write your thoughts in a journal or notebook.

• If you are flying through several time zones, change your watch only as you pass through each zone rather than setting it forward to your destination. This helps your body adjust to avoid jetlag.

• Eat relatively lightly and get up for a few minutes to stretch after your meal to aid digestion. Avoid alcohol, which is extremely dehydrating at high altitudes.

✪ Make yourself comfortable, close your eyes, and observe the inflow and outflow of your breath for a few minutes.

✪ Now take a slow, deep breath through your nose, while thinking or silently repeating the word ‘So’.

✪ Slowly exhale through your nose, while silently repeating the word ‘Hum’. Continue to allow your breath to flow easily, silently repeating ‘So... Hum... ’ with each inflow and outflow of the breath.

Dreamliners to serve Scandinavia

Speaking at the end of the Paris Air Show, during which Qatar Airways had its newest Boeing 787 on static display, Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker said: “Our Scandinavian routes have grown in stature and importance since we began flying to the region in 2007. I am delighted that our Dreamliners will be introduced to Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Oslo very soon providing our

Qatar Airways operates daily flights to each of thethree capital cities from Doha. The Swedish capital of Stockholm saw Dreamliner service kick off on August 1, while the Denmark and Norway capital cities of Copenhagen and Oslo, respectively, will add Dreamliner services effective from September 1.

The Scandinavian cities of Stockholm, Copenhagen, and Oslo are the latest destinations Qatar Airways will serve with its state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft.

هل ستتوقف في الدوحة؟

إذا كنت ستتوقف في الدوحة، أو إذا كانت الدوحة وجهتك النهائية،

فستستلم محفظة لبطاقة الصعود إلى الطائرة باللون األزرق إضافة إلى بطاقة من نفس اللون

لحقائب اليد عند قيامك بتسجيل الدخول إلى رحلتك في وجهة

االنطالق. ولدى وصولك إلى مطار الدوحة الدولي، ستكون بانتظارك

حافلة لنقلك إلى مبنى “القادمون إلى الدوحة”. يرجى االنتباه

للنداءات التي تبث على متن الحافلة للتأكد من نزولك منها عند

توقفها أمام مبنى “القادمون إلى الدوحة”. وبالنسبة لركاب الدرجة

األولى ورجال األعمال، فسيتم نقلهم بواسطة حافلة فاخرة أو

محفظة لبطاقة الصعود إلى الطائرة باللون العنابي إضافة إلى

بطاقة من نفس اللون لحقائب اليد عند قيامك بتسجيل الدخول

في وجهة االنطالق. وتتيح لك المحفظة العنابية إمكانية الد

خول إلى “مبنى البريميم – تحويل الرحالت” الخاص والتابع للخطوط

الجوية القطرية. ولدى وصولك إلى مطار الدوحة الدولي، سيتم

نقلك إلى مبنى “البريميم – تحويل الرحالت” بواسطة حافلة فاخرة

أو سيارة ليموزين خاصة.

مبنى “تحويل الرحالت الملحق”

إذا كنت مسافرا عبر مطار الدوحة الدولي وأمامك رحلة ربط

إلى وجهة أخرى فستستلم محفظة باللون األخضر وبطاقة من

الصعود إلى الحافلة المخصصة لنقل الركاب إلى مبنى “تحويل

نفس اللون لحقائب اليد عند قيامك بتسجيل الدخول إلى رحلتك في وجهة

االنطالق. ولدى وصولك إلى مطار الدوحة الدولي، ستكون بانتظارك حافلة لنقلك إلى مبنى “الرحالت المغادرة والمحولة”. يرجى

صرح السيد أكبر الباكر، الرئيس التنفيذي للخطوط

الجوية القطرية، في نهاية معرض باريس الجوي الذي

استعرضت خالله الناقلة أحدث طائراتها من طراز بوينج 787:

“حققت خطوطنا االسكندنافية نموا مميزا وأهمية كبيرة منذ

تدشينها عام 2007، لذا يسعدنا تسيير طائرتنا الحديثة دريمالينر

إلى كل من ستوكهولم وكوبنهاجن وأوسلو قريبا، وتوفير أعلى مستوى من

الخدمات والراحة للمسافرين على متنها”.

وتسير القطرية رحلة يوميا إلى كل من هذه العواصم

االسكندنافية انطالقا من مقر عملياتها في الدوحة. وستسير الناقلة طائرتها الحديثة 787 إلى العاصمة السويدية ستوكهولم

اعتبارا من األول من أغسطس، تتبعها بعد ذلك كل من

كوبنهاجن وأوسلو – عاصمتا الدنمارك والنرويج على التوالي -

في األول من سبتمبر.

صرح السيد أكبر الباكر، الرئيس التنفيذي للخطوط الجوية القطرية “يشرفنا أن

نكون الراعي الشريك لمهرجان موزاييك الدولي 2013. وتسعدنا

رؤية هذه األعمال الفنية المعروضة هنا إذ أنها تعكس

نسيجا ثقافيا عالميا”.وشاركت القطرية بصفتها

الراعي الشريك للحدث في حفل افتتاح المهرجان الذي يعد من

أرقى المهرجانات في فنون البستنة، والذي يتيح للزائر

مشاهدة أروع تصميمات الفن البستاني من مختلف أنحاء العالم.

وسيعرض في مهرجان هذا العام أكثر من 50 تصميما من

أكثر من 20 دولة، حيث ستقوم لجنة تحكيم بتقييم براعة

وسيتمكن الزوار من المشاركة في اختيار الفائز بجائزة

أعلنت الخطوط الجوية القطرية عن توسعة نطاق عمليات طائرتها من طراز بوينج 787 دريمالينر في القارة األوروبية، حيث سيتم

تسييرها إلى ثالث وجهات اسكندنافية ضمن شبكة خطوط القطرية، لتصبح بذلك أول شركة طيران تسير هذا الطراز من

الطائرات إلى وجهات في هذه المنطقة.

عززت الخطوط الجوية القطرية عالقاتها مع مدينة مونتريال الكندية بعد عامين من تدشين رحالتها إليها من خالل رعايتها لمهرجان موزاييك

مونتريال الدولي 2013 المقام حاليا في حدائق مونتريال النباتية.

بداية عملياتها على خط إسطنبول ثالث رحالت أسبوعيا

وقامت برفع هذا العدد الحقا إلى عشر رحالت أسبوعيا تلبية

للطلب القوي على هذا الخط من قبل المسافرين من السوق

التركية.

ودخل برنامج كيومايلز عامه الخامس، وكان قد أطلق

”…So…“ ”Hum“ التنفس بسالسة وأنت تردد فى سرك مع كل شهيق وزفير.

✪ كرر هذه العملية من 20 إلى 30 دقيقة. فقط تنفس بسالسة وبدون جهد، دون محاولة التركيز أو التفكير في أي شيء آخر.

دوار الحركةانظروا باستمرار في خط

مستقيم وركزوا بصركم على شيء ثابت، لتفادي دوار الحركة.

ضغط مقصورة الركابينخفض الضغط الجوي في

مقصورات ركاب الطائرات بالتزامن مع المزيد من االرتفاع، ما قد

يؤدي إلى انخفاض منسوب األوكسجين في الدم. ورغم أن مقصورة ركاب الطائرة معدلة

الضغط بحيث تقلص انخفاض الضغط داخلها إلى الحد األدنى

الممكن، إال أن تغير الضغط المفاجىء لدى إقالع أو هبوط الطائرة قد يشعركم بانسداد

أذنيكم. وقد يساعد المضغ أو االبتالع أو التثاؤب في موازنة

ضغط طبلتي األذنين. مرضى القلب

ال تسافروا جوا حتى مرور سبعة أيام على األقل من إصابتكم بنوبة قلبية، ما لم يسمح لكم طبيبكم

بذلك. ومن األفضل تأجيل سفركم لمدة شهر واحد في حالة إصابتكم

بمضاعفات بعد تلك النوبة. مرضى السكري

إذا كنتم ستسافرون جوا عبر العديد من المناطق الزمنية، يرجى استشارة طبيبكم حول

تعديل جرعاتكم من األنسولين. الحمل

تستطيعين السفر جوا – حتى األسبوع الـ 28 من الحمل

الطبيعي، وبشهادة طبية حتى مراحل متأخرة من حملك - 36

أسبوعا للجنين الواحد، و32 أسبوعا للتوائم.

بما أن السفر جوا يصيب أجسامكم بالجفاف ويجعلكم تشعرون بالتعب وسرعة االنفعال، اشربوا كمية كبيرة من المياه خالل الطيران.

وأنصحكم بالتالي: اقسموا وزنكم )بالرطل( بالنصف، لتعرفوا عدد أونصات المياه التي

من الجزر المحيطة بها. وعندما تصلون إلى قمة هذه المرتفعات، زوروا جسر السماء

“سكاي بريدج”، وهو جسر منحني طوله 125 مترا ومعلق على ارتفاع ما يزيد عن 100 متر.

وستجدون إلى الجنوب من جزيرة النجكاوي مدينة جورج تاون التاريخية

الشهيرة بهندسة أبنيتها المعمارية الجميلة المستوحاة من فنون العمارة الشرقية والغربية والتي تعكس ماضيها العريق

كمركز تجاري مهم في االمبراطورية البريطانية. وقامت الحكومة في السنوات األخيرة بتنظيف الشوارع وتزيين األرصفة

وزراعة األشجار، كما رممت المعالم الدينية مثل مسجد “كابيتان كيلينج” الذي شيد في

القرن التاسع عشر، ومبنى جمعية “توي شان” الذي يعود تاريخه إلى 180 سنة ويضم

قاعة األسالف الصينيين ومعبد في حي “الهند الصغيرة” في المدينة. كما شجعت

الحكومة على ترميم أبنية المتاجر المهجورة وتحويلها إلى مقاه ومطاعم ومعارض فنية

وفنادق بوتيك عصرية.

وكانت النتيجة تدفق حشود السياح إلى المدينة من مختلف أرجاء العالم، شأنها شأن

ماليزيا نفسها. وكما يقول شعار ماليزيا السياحي “جنة آسيا الحقيقة”، فإن ماليزيا

الرائعة متعددة الثقافات تجسد هذا الشعار بحذافيره.

الرئيسية(، وواحدة من أفضل معالم العاصمة الماليزية السياحية الرائعة لجميع أفراد العائلة.

زوروا هذه الحديقة الخالبة خالل جولتكم السياحية، وتذكروا شراء تذاكر الدخول مخفضة

السعر من مسؤولي الجولة السياحية على متن الحافلة، حيث أن هذا سيوفر لكم بعض النقود

يمكنكم أن تنفقوها على طعام الغداء الحقا. وتضم الحديقة أقفاصا ضخمة تأوي آالف الطيور

وتتيح دخول الزائرين ليستمتعوا بمشاهدتها عن كثب. كما تضم مجموعات كبيرة من الطيور التي تتجول بحرية مثل الطواويس واللقالق والبلشون

وبما أن الحافالت تمر كل نصف ساعة، ال داعي النتظاركم طويال لوصول الحافلة التالية.

وتنطلق حافالت شركة الجوالت السياحية كل ثالثين دقيقة من الثامنة والنصف

صباحا وحتى الثامنة والنصف مساء سبعة أيام في األسبوع. وتستغرق كل جولة ساعتين ونصف الساعة تجوب خاللها

مختلف أرجاء العاصمة الماليزية وتمر بالقرب من كل معلم سياحي رئيسي تقريبا.

ونظرا إلى مسارها الدائري، فربما تتوقف في أحدى المحطات قريبا من الفندق الذي تقيم فيه – مثل الموقف رقم 6 الذي يقع في شارع

“بوكيت بينتانج” الذي يعني اسمه “نجم التلة”، ويعتبر أرقى وجهة تسوق في

كوااللمبور ويكتظ بمراكز التسوق الحديثة العمالقة مثل بافيليون بالزا، وبرجايا تايمز

سكوير، وسونجاي وانع، ولوت تن، وفهرنهايت إيتي إيت.

وغالبا ما يتوجه السكان لدى ارتفاع درجات الحرارة بصورة مرهقة في كوااللمبور إلى شمال

المدينة عبر طرق متعرجة نحو مرتفعات كاميرون الشهيرة بطقسها البارد البديع. وكان

من عادة اإلنجليز بناء محطات جبلية أينما حلوا، لذا ستجدون مصايف شيدت في أماكن عالية هربا من حرارة فصل الصيف الالهبة في كل من الهند وسريالنكا وهونغ كونغ وماليزيا

التي أقام المحتلون المستعمرون فيها مستوطنات صغيرة على تالل “بينانغ” و“فريزر” و“ماكسويل”. غير أن أكبر هذه المستوطنات

تقع فوق مرتفعات كاميرون.

وكان المساح البريطاني وليم كاميرون أول من اكتشف ما يعرف اآلن باسم

مرتفعات كاميرون عام 1885، وحافظت الهضبة الخضراء على حالتها الطبيعية البكر

لمدة 40 عاما حتى صدور مرسوم قلب الهضبة رأسا على عقب، فخالل عقد من

الزمن تم تحويل غابة الهضبة التي لم يكن من السهل اختراقها إلى ملعب للجولف،

وشاليهات، ونزل، ومزارع لمنتجات األلبان ومشاتل ومزارع للخضار والشاي. ويطلق

على مرتفعات كاميرون باعتزاز اسم “انجلترا الصغيرة”، وتوفر اليوم مالذا هادئا بعيدا عن حرارة الطقس االستوائي للسكان المحليين

والسياح على حد سواء.

وثمة مالذ آخر يحظى بشعبية كبيرة يتمثل في جزيرة “النجكاوي” الواقعة في

أقصى شمال غرب ماليزيا. وتجدر زيارة هذه

يصحبنا سايمون أوستهايمر المقيم السابق والمتيم بماليزيا في رحلة

ممتعة يحدثنا خاللها عن العوامل التي جعلت من دولة جنوب شرق آسيا

وجهة مثالية لقضاء العطالت العائلية، بدءا من الشواطئ الساحرة ووصوال إلى حدائق الطيور البديعة، إنها حقا

“جنة آسيا الحقيقة”.

زرت ماليزيا للمرة األولى برفقة زوجتي عام 2005، وتجولت على مدى أسبوعين من

القيادة المجنونة في جميع أنحاء شبه الجزيرة التي تعرف بالبر الرئيسي للبالد.

وكنت آنئذ أعمل لدى مجلة في شانغهاي، وكنت وزوجتي متشوقان للهروب من البرد القارس والرطب الذي يسود تلك المدينة الواقعة شرقي الصين خالل فصل الشتاء. وبمجرد وصولنا إلى كوااللمبور، استأجرنا

سيارة من طراز بروتون ساجا، السيارة األيقونية األكثر شهرة التي أنتجتها ماليزيا، والتي أطلقها رئيس الوزراء السابق مهاتير

محمد في عام 1985. واستعنا بخريطة سياحية مجانية قابلة للطي زودتنا بها شركة تأجير السيارات والتي لم تحدد سوى الطرق

الرئيسية فقط. وانطلقنا في جولتنا السياحية من العاصمة الماليزية

كوااللمبور، كما يفعل معظم السياح.

وتشهد كوااللمبور التي يبلغ عدد سكانها ستة ماليين نسمة، ويطلق عليها

اختصارا اسم “كيه أل”، طفرة ازدهار هائلة غير مسبوقة، حيث يزدحم أفقها برافعات

مشاريع البناء بينما يفد إليها ماليين السياح. وتزهو المدينة بمساحاتها الخضراء وتزدان

بغابات وارفة الظالل تفصل بين مجمعات المشاريع اإلنمائية السكنية. ورغم جمال

كوااللمبور األخاذ، إال أنه من الصعب التنقل بين أحيائها، مما دفع المخططين المحليين للجوء إلى تصميم طرق التفافية حول الجبال

بدال من اختراقها، ليوفروا بذلك شبكة معقدة ومبهمة من الطرق باتت أشبه

بطبق من نودلز “هوكين مي” المتناثرة. ولكن يعود الفضل بحمد الله إلى شركة

الجوالت السياحية “كيه أل هوب أون، هوب أوف” التي وفرت لنا أفضل وسيلة الكتشاف معالم المدينة الشهيرة الرائعة بدون إزعاج.

أحب كل ما يتعلق بمبنى هذا الفندق الذي صممه السير جورج جيلبرت سكوت على الطراز

القوطي في سبعينات القرن التاسع عشر. وقد أعيد تأهيله بأسلوب جميل مع المحافظة على

شاعريته وعظمته وأناقته المستمدة من تراث فنادق محطات السكك الحديدية في العصر

الفيكتوري. وتقف ردهة استقبال الفندق قبالة الموقف السابق لعربات نخبة المجتمع

الفيكتوري الذين كانوا يقصدون الفندق. ويتيح مكتب الحجز وقاعة التذاكر السابقة المتاخمة

لمحطة “سينت بانكراس”، تخيل الهرج والمرج الذي كان يرافق وصول ومغادرة المسافرين.

يقع مقهى “ديبارتمنت أوف كوفي أند سوشيال أفيرز” في متجر سابق لبيع الخردوات في جادة “ليذرلين” في ضاحية “هولبورن” القريبة من حي

المجوهرات الشهير “هاتون جاردن”. ويحظى هذا المقهى بسمعة طيبة بتقديم أطباق

الطعام الشهية والقهوة الممتازة والخبراء المخضرمين في تحضير القهوة واألجواء

المريحة المثالية للتأليف والكتابة حين أرغب في تغيير المشهد.

قد ال تكون هذه المشاريع أحدث مشاهد الساحة اللندنية، إال أنني أعتقد أن هذه المشاريع أكثر

من مجرد ظاهرة عابرة. وما يعجبني في هذه المشاريع هو طبيعتها الفورية واالنتقالية، كما

أنني من أكبر هواة دعم المشاريع الناشئة والشركات المحلية المستقلة. وقد تتراوح تلك

المشاريع بين المطاعم والحانات والمتاجر وبين ورشات العمل اإلبداعي وحتى دور السينما المكشوفة، وأسمع عنها عادة عبر مواقع

التواصل االجتماعي اإللكترونية.

بما أني ترعرعت في ضواحي لندن فأنا أحب الحياة فيها بأجوائها البوهيمية البهيجة، فهي تحفل

بأسواق يقيمها المزارعون ومخابز تقليدية ومقاهي مستقلة ومجموعات من البوتيكات

والمتاجر المتنوعة التي تجعلني أشعر بالسعادة! وتتمتع ضاحية “بالكهيث” بسحر خاص وتنتشر

في أرجائها أعداد كبيرة من بوتيكات األزياء وإكسسوارات الموضة ومتاجر الجزارين

والخبازين والبقاالت وصانعي األطباق التخصصية والحلويات، وتستضيف سوقا خاصة ينظمها

المزارعون أسبوعيا، ما يشيع فيها أجواء القرى بة، خاصة أنها تتميز بمساحاتها الريفية المحب

الرحبة.

على األقدام من موقع سفينة “كتي سارك” يقع المتحف الوطني البحري حيث يستقبلك

في باحته الخارجية مجسم يمثل السفينة الحربية للقائد البحري البريطاني المشهور

نلسون موضوع داخل قارورة، أبدعه النحات الياباني يينكا شونيباريه الحائز على لقب

فارس اإلمبراطورية البريطانية. لكننا قررنا التركيز على متحف المرصد الفلكي الملكي،

السكشاف بداية الزمن.

وصلنا إلى المرصد الفلكي الملكي فوق التلة عبر حديقة جرينتش الجميلة. ورغم

أننا كنا ال نزال نشاهد أفق لندن العمراني إال أننا كنا نشعر بأننا أصبحنا خارج المدينة

بالفعل. وستجدون هنا ساحة مركز خط الطول “ميريديان” الذي يخترق جرينتش ويقسم الكرة األرضية إلى نصفين شرقي

وغربي ليحدد التوقيت العالمي، ويتيح لكم الوقوف فوق الخط تماما ضبط توقيت

ساعاتكم بموجبه، ولو حدث أن تواجدتم فوق هذا الخط قبل الساعة الواحدة بعد الظهر

بالضبط راقبوا “كرة الزمن” تصعد أعلى الصارية فوق المبنى، وعند سقوطها أسفل

الصارية في الساعة الواحدة بالضبط، تستطيعون ضبط توقيت ساعاتكم فعليا

بدقة متناهية! كما قمنا داخل القبة الفلكية للمرصد جولة مدهشة بصحبة أحد علماء

المرصد الفلكي. ويسعى متحف المرصد الكتشاف جميع األجسام الغريبة طوال شهر

أغسطس، عبر عرض يقدمه في القبة الفلكية يتساءل فيه عما إذا كنا وحدنا في

الكون.

وتكشف جولة سيرا على األقدام على امتداد الضفة الجنوبية لنهر التايمز بين

محطات مترو واترلو وجسر لندن، عن العديد من المتاحف اللندنية األخرى. وإلى الغرب من جسر لندن يمكنكم االستمتاع خالل العطلة الصيفية بنمط الحياة الذي كان سائدا في عهد أسرة تيودور الملكية البريطانية على متن نموذج كامل الحجم

معاد بناؤه من سفينة الغليون الشراعية “جولدن هيند 2” التي كان يقودها القرصان

البريطاني المشهور السير فرانسيس دريك والمعززة بمرشدين سياحيين متخصصين

وفعاليات ترفيهية وورشات عمل حول المعارك التي خاضها. أما السفينة الحربية

“بلفاست” الراسية في منطقة تقع بين جسر

طالب المدارس يزورون قسم اكتشاف الفضاء في متحف العلوم في لندن، ويضم صاروخ ومركبة

الفضاء التي حطت على القمر.

تعتبر لندن موطن العديد من أفضل متاحف العالم التي يمكن زيارة العديد منها مجانا. تصطحبنا كارين مارتن في جولة ممتعة في المتاحف التي يجدر

بالعائالت زيارتها خالل العطلة الصيفية.

الفاتنة ويعتبر المفضل لدي. لكن األزياء ال تشكل سوى جزءا من التشكيلة الهائلة من

معروضات المتحف والموزعة على قاعات مخصصة للكتب والرقص واألثاث والهندسة

المعمارية والمطبوعات واألعمال الفنية وتشكيالت التحف اإلسالمية والشرق

أوسطية وغيرها الكثير. ويتمثل سر جمال وروعة هذا المتحف في تنوع أقسامه بحيث

ن الزوار من اختيار األقسام التي يهتمون يمكباستكشافها. وتعزز األنشطة وورشات

العمل العائلية من متعة زيارة هذا المتحف، حيث يتيح لألطفال خالل العطلة الصيفية

اختيار األنشطة والمواضيع التي تستهويهم في جوالتهم النهارية، ومن ثم التجول بحرية

في أرجاء المتحف الستلهام أفكار جديدة ومن ثم رسمها أو تنفيذها على أرض الواقع.

ويستطيع الزوار ارتياد المتاحف األربعة التي تشكل مجمع “ذا رويال ميوزيومز

معرض “رؤى األرض” في متحف التاريخ الطبيعي، لندن، المملكة المتحدة.

والنباتات والصخور، والمعروضة في مركز البحوث الميدانية في المتحف.

ومن الناحية المقابلة لمتحف التاريخ الطبيعي مباشرة، يقع متحف فيكتوريا

وألبرت )V&A( األسطوري للفنون اإلبداعية والتصميم الحافل بمعارض األزياء وعروضها

ولت أيام المتاحف المتخمة بالمقتنيات المعروضة والفتات “ممنوع اللمس”. وتعود شعبية أفضل متاحف لندن إلى

تركيزها على المرح، والمعروضات التفاعلية العملية، والجوالت واألنشطة

العائلية الممتعة.

لالستمتاع بزيارة بعض أروع متاحف لندن، توجهوا إلى طريق المعارض )محطة مترو ساوث كنسنجتون( التي تجدون فيها

متحف التاريخ الطبيعي ومتحف العلوم ومتحف فيكتوريا وألبرت )V&A( في مواقع

قريبة من بعضها بعضا.

وسوف نبدأ جولتنا بزيارة متحف العلوم الذي أفضله على المتاحف األخرى، نظرا

لمعروضاته المدهشة التي تستقطب صيحات إعجاب الزوار. كما يعتبر أحد أكثر متاحف لندن تفاعال مع الزوار ويسهل على

العائالت التجول في أرجائه، وتتراوح معروضاته ومقتنياته الموزعة على صاالت

العرض بين اكتشاف الفضاء والعلوم الطبية واالختراعات وعلم الوراثة. وسوف تصادفون

خالل زيارتكم للمتحف ممثلين يلعبون أدوار بعض أشهر الشخصيات التاريخية، مثل رائد علوم الكهرباء في القرن التاسع عشر مايكل

فارادي، وهو يجري تجارب كهربائية رائدة، كما ستصادفون عالم الفيزياء المشهور

ألبرت آينشتاين، فضال عن يوري جاجارين أول رائد فضاء في العالم ورائدة الطيران

إيمي جونسون.

ويقع متحف التاريخ الطبيعي بجوار متحف العلوم، ويتذكر جميع الذين زاروه في

طفولتهم الهيكل العظمي المقلد لديناصور “دبلودوكس” النباتي العمالق الذي كان

يطلق عليه لقب “ديبي” للتدليل وكان معروضا في ردهة المتحف الرئيسية. وال

يزال هذا الهيكل يحظى اليوم بنفس الشعبية التي كان يحظى بها حين عرض للمرة األولى قبل 100 عام. وتحفل قاعات المتحف اآلن بالعديد من نماذج الهياكل

العظمية المقلدة لديناصورات تتحرك وتزمجر إلكترونيا بما فيها ديناصور “تي ركس”

آكل اللحوم الشرس. ويلصق الزوار وجوههم بدهشة بواجهات العرض الزجاجية

بوينس آيرس ثالثة مطاعم متميزة في

اإل كوارتيتوتجري الدماء اإليطالية في عروق 60% من األرجنتينيين، لذا ليس من المستغرب

العثور على مطاعم البيتزا والباستا عند زوايا جميع الشوارع بالتناوب. ولالستمتاع بأطيب

المأكوالت السريعة ال بد من زيارة مطعم “إل كوارتيتو” أحد أكثر المطاعم شعبية في

المدينة. ويستقطب المطعم الزاخر بالصور التذكارية ألبطال المالكمة وكرة القدم أعدادا

كبيرة من سكان المدينة األصليين الذين يطلق عليهم اسم “بورتينيوس” أي سكان

مدن المرافىء. وننصحكم بتناول بيتزا “فوجازيتا” األرجنتينية المحشوة بجبن

الموزاريلال والمكسوة بالبصل والشبيهة ببيتزا “فوكاسيا” اإليطالية، والفطائر

السميكة والطرية كالتي كانت رائجة في مدينة نابولي اإليطالية عام 1934. ويوفر

المطعم لرواده فرصة االختالط مع موظفي الشركات والمحامين. وإذا كنتم في عجلة من أمركم، ولم يكن لديكم سوى 5 دقائق لتناول وجبة طعام، يمكنكم تناول قطعة

موللو يشكل مطعم “موللو” أحدث إبداعات

الشيف “خوسيه كاسترو منديفيل” الذي أدخل األطباق البيروفية الراقية إلى بوينس آيرس. وحين يقرع الضيوف الباب

يستقبلهم نادل بتحية “ريمايكولاليكي” الترحيبية بلغة “كويشوا” قبل الدخول إلى

رحاب المطعم األنيق الذي ال يستوعب سوى 40 ضيفا. وتم إدراج الشيف منديفيل في قائمة أفضل 10 كبار طهاة بيروفيين عام 2012. ورغم أنه قلص حجم مطعمه الجديد

مقارنة مع مطاعمه السابقة، إال أن قائمة طعام موللو ال تقل تنوعا عن قوائم تلك

المطاعم. وتتميز أطباق المأكوالت البحرية التي تهيمن على قائمة الطعام بأنها كبيرة لدرجة تسمح بتشاطرها بين شخصين،

وتركز القائمة على األطباق الكالسيكية أمثال أطباق “سيفيتشيه” و”شيفا” و”نيكاي”، حيث تأثر المطبخ البيروفي بالمطبخين

الياباني والصيني. وننصحكم بطبق ساشيمي السلمون األبيض المطهو بالبخار والذي

يقدم مع يخنة لحم الغنم، ليشكل مفاجأة سارة لحاسة التذوق.

األرجنتين

ال تبعد شبه جزيرة »إيزو« سوى ساعة واحدة تقريبا عن طوكيو على متن قطارات

الرصاصة السريعة، ويقصدها سكان العاصمة الهاربين من ازدحامها وضجيجها في

الصيف لالستمتاع بشواطئها الجميلة أو التزلج فوق األمواج أو االسترخاء في الهواء

الطلق وممارسة لعبة الجولف. وتشكل قمة جبل فوجي البركانية المخروطية المكللة

بالثلوج البيضاء، خلفية شاعرية لخليج »إيزو« وتالله المكسوة بأشجار الصنوبر. وتعد بلدة »أتامي« الساحرة الصغيرة

بوابة شبه جزيرة إيزو للمسافرين القادمين من طوكيو، وتشتهر بمطاعم النودلز م مع مرق السمك التقليدية التي تقد

المجفف والفطر واألعشاب البحرية. زوروا بلدة »كيونكاكو« لالستمتاع بمشاهدة فنون

العمارة والحدائق التقليدية اليابانية المتميزة بلمسات من فنون العمارة

البريطانية من عصر أسرة تيودور الملكية.وبالتوجه جنوبا لزيارة بلدة »إيتو« نصادف

نزل »توكاي – كان« التقليدي القديم المتميز باطاللته الجميلة على نهر البلدة،

ويقدم لضيوفه شاي »جوري« األخضر الراقي وحلويات الكستناء. كما يتيح للسيدات

فرصة تعلم أسرار ماكياج فتيات »الجيشا« وأزيائهن التقليدية.

واشتهرت التالل الواقعة وسط شبه جزيرة إيزو من خالل قصة المؤلف الياباني

ياسوناري كاواباتا الفائز بجائزة نوبل. وتجد في هذه القصة وصفا بديعا للغابات ووديان الزهور البرية الجميلة ومناظر شالالت

»جيورين« الرائعة التي تتساقط مياهها من ارتفاع 25 مترا.

وتنتشر أعداد كبيرة من منتجعات ينابيع المياه الحارة والفوارة في شبه جزيرة إيزو

على السواحل وفي الداخل. ويستطيع ضيوف منتجع »ياماتوكان أونسين« الواقع في

بلدة »إيتو« االستمتاع بحمامات منفردة، بينما يتيح منتجع »أوساوا أونسين« القريب

من بلدة »ماتسوزاكي« لضيوفه فرصة االستحمام بمياه الينابيع الحارة المحاطة

بمزارع األرز الخضراء. وستجدون في منتجع »شوزنجي« أجواء هادئة وسط بساتين

أشجار البامبو على ضفاف نهر »كاتسورا«.

تقع شبه جزيرة »إيزو« الوعرة والمكسوة بالغابات في المحيط الهادي جنوب غربي العاصمة اليابانية طوكيو، وتوفر مالذا بحريا ريفيا غنيا بالتاريخ والتقاليد والمناظر الطبيعية الساحلية الساحرة.

تدب الحياة في بلدة »ميشيما« خالل الفترة من 15 إلى 17 أغسطس من كل عام

المثالي للقيام بجوالت سياحية في فيينا، وكلما انخفضت درجات الحرارة انخفضت

أجور اإلقامة في الفنادق. وتشتهر فيينا بعروض األوبرا، وتعتبر دار األوبرا

الحكومية في فيينا من أروع دور األوبرا في العالم. كما تشتهر المدينة بقصورها

الفخمة الجديرة بالزيارة مثل قصري

وحديقتي “بلفيديري” وقصر “شونبرون” والقصر اإلمبراطوري. وتضم المعالم

السياحية المفتوحة حديقة حيوان “شونبرون” المدرجة على قائمة

اليونسكو للتراث العالمي والتي تعتبر من أقدم حدائق الحيوان في العالم،

وحديقة “دوناوبارك” التي تحتوي على لوحة شطرنج عمالقة، وحديقة التزلج

وحديقة الحيوانات األليفة.

قد يكون طقس روما المتوسطي أحيانا حارا جدا في فصل الصيف الذي يستقطب أكبر عدد من السياح. ويوفر شهر أكتوبر

أفضل توازن ممكن بين جودة الطقس وأعداد الزوار لدى انتهاء ذروة الموسم

واعتدال الطقس نهارا وميله إلى البرودة ليال. ويطلق سكان المدينة على أيام أكتوبر

المشمسة والمشرقة لقب “أوتوبراتا رومانا”. وتعتبر روما إحدى أقدم مدن أوروبا ومتحفا مفتوحا في الهواء الطلق، وتكتظ بالمعالم

الرومانية المهيبة أمثال “البانثيون” أحد أكثر مباني روما القديمة محافظة على

بهائه األصلي، و”الفوروم الروماني” الذي شكل المركز الحضري الذي تطورت حوله

روما القديمة، ومدرج “الكولسيوم” الروماني الشهير الذي ال يزال رمز المدينة

الخالدة ويناهز عمره األلفي عام. وال تزال قبة كاتدرائية القديس بطرس تهيمن حتى اليوم على أفق روما العمراني وال

يمكن االستمتاع بروعتها إال عبر تسلق درجات ساللمها. وسوف يجد عشاق الفنون

ضالتهم المنشودة في متاحف الفاتيكان موطن بعض أروع تحف عصر النهضة

في العالم، بما فيها رسومات الفنان مايكل أنجلو على سقف كنيسة “سيستين”،

كما تضم “فيلال بورجيزيه” مجموعة واسعة من اللوحات والتماثيل.

تنخفض درجات الرطوبة المرتفعة التي تشتهر بها هونج كونج في شهر أكتوبر

وتسطع الشمس في سماء زرقاء صافية مما يجعل أكتوبر أفضل الشهور الكتشاف

المدينة واالستمتاع بمعالمها الرائعة، ال سيما مناظر أفقها العمراني البانورامية

الخالبة من أعلى قمم الجزيرة التي يمكنكم بلوغها بواسطة القطار المعلق.
