Welcome to Hawks Eye
Hawks Eye Golf Course is a beautiful, public championship golf course that is the centerpiece of the
Hawk’s Eye Golf Community in Bellaire, Michigan. Open since 2004, this John Robinson design has
matured into a layout that caters to all types of golfer.
From the tips, the course demands you bring your ‘A-game,’ as position is premium if you hope to score
well. There are some forced carries, especially on the back nine, that will put length and accuracy to the
test.
Standard tees offer a challeng as good as any in the golfing Mecca that is northern Michigan. It would
be wise to study up on course
management as you plan your
strategy against the elusive par.
The course will test your abilities
while at the same time offer you
design elements and vistas that
will take your breath away. Have
your camera ready.
Forward tees offer the opportunity
to skirt around some of the more
troubling hazards and obstacles,
making Hawk’s Eye Golf Course a
fun round of golf without high
intensity shotmaking pressure.
Look for our Junior Forward Tee
program coming in the
2015 season.
No matter your ability,
once you have played
Hawk’s Eye Golf Course,
you will want to
experience it again and
again. The challenge, the
beauty, and the sheer
enjoyment of a round at
Hawk’s Eye Golf Course
makes this resort a must
for your golfing bucket
list.

A commanding dog leg left with a large pond
as the focal point of this opening hole. Big
hitters will challenge the 260-yard watery
carry and shoot straight over the pond.
Successful shots will be re-warded with
only 100 yards left to reach the large,
undulating green. Game managers will take
what the hole gives them and stay right of
the pond, but will face a 185 yard uphill shot
into the green.

A huge landing area awaits the biggest tee
shot you can muster, after that it’s all
placement as you are confronted with water
right, trees left, and bunkers guarding the
tight landing area. The tiny, guarded green
awaits your dart-like approach shot. The
relatively flat putting surface leaves very
little room for errant shots or those that
come in too hot. Better bring your short
game.

The huge, receptive green awaits your well-
struck tee shot. Problem is, number 3 defies
you to be accurate. Sand left, sand right, and
water attracting even the slightest fade not
long enough leaves you with only one last
choice – aim left of center to take advantage
of the fairway turf if you mis-hit. Hopefully
the bounce goes your way.

Number 4 is waiting patiently for your par.
Straight away, big landing area off the tee,
and an uphill approach to a large green can
all play in your favor. Just be sure to know
your pin placement for the day as club
selection is key and knowing exactly what’s
between you and the flag can make the
difference between a friendly par and an
elusive one.

Now the fun begins. To succeed on
Number 5 we recommend your drive be
straight, true, and LONG to reach the
upper shelf of this guarded fairway. Do
this, and the battle is half done as your
second shot is to a treacherous three-
tiered green that is perched atop a
plateau that falls off on 3 sides. Miss
right if you miss, as the abyss behind
and left will have you chipping for par.

After reaching the apex of the front it’s
time to head back down the mountain.
Number 6 starts with a simple,
straightforward, slightly downhill tee
shot to the end of the fairway. From
this point, the 100-yard, 25-foot
elevation drop to the 2-tiered green
will make or break you. I hope for your
sake the pin is top left today.

Luckily for us there is a nice, flat ridge
that runs the length of Number 7. On
top of this ridge is the fairway that
meanders down to a huge oval
relatively flat green. But your luck will
run out if you stray from the ridge.
Spray your shot right and your uneven
lie may send your ball to a watery
grave. Go left, and who knows what’s
lurking down there. Be careful.

Standing on the tee at Number 8 you
can breathe a sigh of relief. The
fairway ahead awaits your shot with no
tricks or hidden agendas, and even
extra room for forward roll. Once again
know your pin placements well, as your
uphill approach can be a couple clubs
either way depending. Leave it short,
and it may just come back to meet you.

What could be easier than a level 150-
ish yard shot to a deep flat green? Yes
you might have to carry some water,
and yes there might be some sand
involved, and yes you might be just a
few minutes from a chilled beverage
and some nourishment, but it’s just a
simple shot. Right?

Refreshed and ready to take on the
second half of your round, a well struck
tee shot on 10 should enjoy a few extra
yards on the generous fairway that
slopes away from you toward the
green. It’s the flight of your downhill
approach shot that will have you on
edge, depending on whether today’s pin
placement is friendly, or ferocious.

Nestled in the trees lies the 11th.
Precision is your only option here in
your quest for par. Land on the putting
‘nest’ and you’re good to go. But this
nest is well guarded – an all-water
carry, sand, and a steep sloping front
help keep the less-than-precise
intruders away. Good luck.

The narrow strip of fairway is nestled
at the base of the incoming slopes on
both sides of Number 12. If you can hit
a controlled driver it’s your best bet,
leaving you a short approach to the
green that angles away – just beware
the huge bunker that beckons off-line
shots. You can hold back and play a
longer approach, but this will leave you
with a daunting club choice depending
on today’s pin. Your decision.

There’s nothing quite as majestic as
watching the flight of a well struck
golf shot. Number 13 provides you
with this opportunity x2 thanks to
80 feet of elevation difference
between tee and green. Your tee
shot will soar for twice as long on
its’ way to the dance floor. Question
is: Will you pick the right club?

Cutting corners doesn’t always pay off.
The dogleg-left 14th tempts you to
gamble with the corner for an easier
approach to the clover-shaped, tiny,
and treacherous plateau that
masquerades as a green. Mis-hit this
gamble and you either face a long,
uphill bunker shot, or a wild uneven
approach from the tall grass. But if you
decide to play it safe and stay out to
the open fairway on the right, well, re-
read the part about the green …

From the tee on 15, there is nothing
between you and the fairway – and
that’s the problem. You’ll need to carry
a lot of nothing to make the fairway.
Then, faced with an uphill second shot,
you need to carry the intimidating
crossing bunker ahead on the horizon.
Once these two hurdles have been
conquered, it’s only a short iron to the
relatively flat putting surface. You only
need to be aware of the two large sand
bunkers, grass bunkers, and large
mounds guarding the angled approach.

The flat, inviting fairway of Number
16, combined with the lack of length of
this hole, entice you switch to attack
mode. A great drive gives you an
excellent opportunity for birdie here
and a chance to make up some ground.
Spray your tee shot in either direction,
however, and retreat might be a better
idea. A less than ideal angle into this
two-tiered green might have you
hoisting the white flag.

Every once in a while you come across a golf
hole that makes you stop in your tracks and
take a moment to appreciate everything that
makes golf great. Number 17 is just such a
hole. From the tee you can’t really see the epic
vista that awaits. Once you crest the ridge it
becomes crystal clear. After you catch your
breath, you’ve got a ton of work ahead. There’s
lots of fairway room for your second shot, but
lots of tall grass and water between you and
the sloping away three-tiered green. Enjoy!

Heading in, the 18th couldn’t be any more
of a beautiful way to finish. Aim for the
last bunker on the hill and your tee shot
will be safely in position. As you address
your approach, imagine a huge gallery
on the stadium hill behind the green and
on the balconies of the clubhouse. An
easy approach to a welcoming green.
Imagine the roar of the crowd as you
stick it close. Welcome home.
