2. Gary Simone, Ph.D., Professor, Plant Pathology, Cooperative Extension Service, Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, University of Florida, Gainesville, 32611.

The Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer authorized to provide research, educational information and other services only to individuals and institutions that function without regard to race, color, sex, age, handicap, or national origin. For information on obtaining other extension publications, contact your county Cooperative Extension Service office. Florida Cooperative Extension Service/Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences/University of Florida/Christine Taylor Waddill, Dean.

More of the newer disease control pesticides have product labels to allow broader product use in the area of ornamental plants. These labels include one or more of the following:

• uses for plant categories (e.g. bulbs, flowers, etc.)

• "Notice to User" statements

• label language such as "like," such as," or "similar to" when specifying plant clearances.

The agrichemical companies have responded to the needs of the nursery, pest control and grounds maintenance industries for greater product utility across ornamental plants with the above label modifications. These efforts have provided legal use of these products on plants not specified on the label. Professional users of these products must remember that they must determine plant safety for each product used on an off-label plant species. New tank-mix combinations must be evaluated by jar tests for physical and chemical compatibility. Small numbers of plants should be treated with appropriate new-tank combinations with unsprayed controls to evaluate the development of either acute or chronic phytotoxicity prior to widespread use.

Fungicide products with broad crop clearance on ornamental plants are summarized in Table 1 (found in PDMG-V2-03, Fungicides with Broad Crop Clearances). These products are not repeated in Table 2 (Plant Disease Management Pesticides for Specific Ornamental Plants). Table 2 includes an alphabetical list by generic plant name with cross references by common plant name. Both Table 1 and Table 2 must be consulted for a complete selection of legal disease management options for an ornamental plant.
