Industrial Maintenance (Millwright) Training

Manufacturing today requires a skilled workforce. Gone are the days of labor intensive work environments. Tech-nology and lean manufacturing has taken its place. High –tech machinery in today’s manufacturing still uses mo-tors, gears, shafts, bearings and requires hydraulic and pneumatic systems. These devices and systems are the domain of the millwright. Millwrights are highly skilled workers who maintain today’s high–tech machinery.

In an effort to improve their maintenance processes, Ida-ho Forest Group partnered with Lewis-Clark State Col-lege Workforce Training. Together, we developed and delivered training based on Idaho Forest Groups specific needs. The training covered more than 50 topics of in-struction, from basic mathematics to advanced hydrau-lics.

The training goals were to improve preventative mainte-nance and responses to mechanical failures. Idaho For-est Group reported a measurable improvement in both areas, a result of training. Improved production was their return on investment.

Not lost in this story was the millwrights’ investment of time and effort. Students attended class on their days off and they became students of their craft. Any successful training program is only as good as the students efforts.

The Idaho Forest Group training program is one of many examples of industry and Workforce Training working together to deliver solutions. Our relationships with Indus-try have the power to build the needed skilled workforce for today’s manufacturing, and tomorrow’s innovations.

Cover Story

Over the years, Lewis-Clark State College’s Workforce Training teamed up with the Idaho Department of Corrections on many employment based trainings for inmates at the Orofino facility and at NICI in Cottonwood. Topics have included welding, computer repair, Quickbooks, flagging/traffic control, outside sales, customer service and more. In 2005, Irene Vogel with the State Division of Professional Technical Education (Now called Career and Technical Education) began a Horticulture program at the Boise facility. In 2010, Lewis-Clark State College Workforce Training converted the curriculum into a landscape design class and used the service learning technique, building a horse-shoe court on a hillside at NICI, complete with retaining wall. The result was inspiring and the program evolved from there. In 2012, NICI Education Program Manager and School Principle Bill Farmer, acquired some Education Grant funds and built a state of the art Green House on NICI grounds, right outside the back door of the Robert Janss school. The curriculum then moved into Greenhouse Professionals. The students produce plant products distributed to gardens at public facilities throughout North Central Idaho. Several instructors have been involved over the years including Liz Clark, Dallas Nuemann, Molly Wiebush and the current instructor, Gail Gates. In 2016, the program adopted a statewide curriculum entitled Ornamental Horticulture which has now been ratified by the State Division of Career and Technical Education for inclusion in the Skillstack badging system. Successful students pass exams for the components of the course. Employers such as landscape and yard care maintenance professionals can send a message when they are hiring and students who erned a badge in the Ornamental Horticulture section can respond to the employer’s notice. The employer can be confident the applicant has passed the exams and have basic knowledge. Julie Oye-Johnson is the statewide director for Education with the Department of Corrections, and she and her staff are excited about the new possibilities for the added credential of Skillstack that their population may use to gain employment. For more information on Skillstack visit https://icsc.skillstack.idaho.gov
