Industries that manufacture and use DI/UPW are many. Some common ones are:
• The Power Industry, for steam generation to drive turbines.
• The Semiconductor Industry, for wafer production rinse water.
• The Pulp and Paper Industry, for steam generation usedto boil the wood pulp and also to drive turbinesgenerating power.
• The Pharmaceutical Industry, for products e.g. Water ForInjection (WFI), cleaning and rinsing, addition togranulates for tablet manufacturing and steamgeneration.
• The Petrochemical Industry, for steam generation usedto heat and boil products (better than naked flames!)and also for power generation.
The DI/UPW is generally manufactured using two methods, often a combination of both:
• Resin columns for stripping out cations (positivelycharged ions) and anions (negatively charged ions).
• Reverse Osmosis.
Resin columns are the most common and best way fordeionizing water. Good resins leave pure H2O. However, aresin column only has a limited life before the resins needto be regenerated. This regeneration process takes timeand is expensive. It involves washing resins with largequantities of sulfuric acid (for cation columns) or caustic(for anion columns). The more efficient the column is(until breakthrough occurs), the less expensive and moreenvironmentally safe it is for the user. Reverse Osmosisunits are often used ahead of demineralizers becausethey remove a good amount of the dissolved salts in theraw water. This extends the run time of the resin beds andlowers the frequency of regeneration.
Sodium
Water (usually city water or RO conditioned water) passesthrough a cation resin column first. This strips out cationssuch as sodium, potassium and calcium and exchangesthem for hydrogen ions. When the column is saturated, ions with the weakest bond to the resin escape. This iscalled "breakthrough" and when caught in time allows theuser to switch to a new resin column while regeneratingthe exhausted column. Sodium has the weakest bond ofall common cations and can be measured reliably at lowlevels. Sodium analyzer (Model 1811AO) is used to catchthis "breakthrough" as it is occurring.
Silica
The water leaving the cation column is now free of allcations, having replaced them with hydrogen ion, H+.Anions such as chloride and sulfate are still present. Theanion column strips these negatively charged ions andreplaces them with hydroxide ions, OH-, creating pureH2O. Although not an ion, silicate (SiO2) has a very weaknegative charge and bond and is the first measurableelement to "breakthrough" and indicate that anioncolumn regeneration is necessary. After the anion columna silica analyzer (Model 2030) is used to catch the firstsigns of this “breakthrough” occurring.

Industries that use Ultra Pure Deionized Water for plantprocesses and/or power generation need to maintain theintegrity of this water in their downstream applications.
Minimization of trace salt contamination is critical toprevent serious corrosion problems that can causeexpensive damage to turbines and other plantcomponents. Control of dissolved gases such as oxygenand ammonia, in proper low concentration ranges, isrequired to prevent corrosion. pH ranges must bemaintained in a narrow window for the same reasons.Proper chemistry control in these plant processes will notonly prevent costly and unscheduled outages, but willalso greatly extend the useful lifetime of the plant.
A typical plant schematic is outlined on thefollowing page, power plant chemistry.
Industries concerned with boiler water chemistry include:

Drinking water
is subject to regulations set forth by the U.S. EPA, the state, the city, town or county and vary across national and stateborders. Bottled drinking water is controlled, so that measured values and concentrations may be listed. Manymeasurements are made in the lab on benchtop instruments, however pH, conductivity and fluoride are also measuredOn-Line. These On-Line measurements detect changes as they occur and raise warning flags if limits are exceeded.

ROSS™ pHsuperior technology
ROSS technology is widely used in laboratory and field pH measurements.
ROSS pH technology is also available for measuring ultrapure, pure or potable water On-Line, where the highestaccuracy is needed.
Pure water samples have relatively low ionic strength andare therefore poor conductors.
If you are measuring On-Line samples that have low ionicstrength or that fluctuate in temperature, the ROSSelectrode’s patented internal reference system provides:
• superior measurement stability
• faster response
• greater accuracy
• more reproducible results than conventionalOn-Line pH electrodes
The silver-free ROSS reference system has NO dissolvedmetals. In conventional silver-chloride based referencesystems, dissolved metals precipitate. The result inclogged junctions, causing a slow, sluggish response. TheROSS internal reference system features a unique liquid-to-liquid double junction design. This avoids long-termdrift or inaccurate readings. The graph below showstypical results of how ROSS electrodes respond versusconventional pH electrodes. The ROSS electrode respondsalmost immediately to the correct buffer pH value with thechange in temperature.

Steam conditioning:The 1803 is designed to take a high pressure steam sample (e.g.the process steam used in power plants, paper mills, oil refineriesetc.) and reduce the temperature and pressure down to the levelsrequired by our On-Line analyzers. Process steam is used in manyindustries; it is the analysis of this steam that has made On-Lineanalyzers so important in the power, paper, petrochemical andother industries.• The 1803 can handle pressures of up to 20,897 K Pa (3030 psi).
The usual average pressure of process steam is approximately6,896 K Pa (1000 psi)
• The 1803 can reduce the temperature of the sample from 538°C(1000°F) to under 38°C (100°F)
• No electrical requirements - the 1803 is purely mechanical, requiring no electrical hook up. This means that it can be used inmultiple countries regardless of the voltage requirements. The1803 can also be used in hazardous locations without anydanger of explosion
• The 1803 has a mechanical temperature shut off valve which willtrip if the temperature exceeds 40°C (104°F). This can happenwhen a cooler fails or the cooling water becomes too hot. Thevalve diverts the hot sample away from the On-Line monitor, avoiding costly damage
Features:• Thermal shut off valve• Sample cooler• Pressure reduction element• Temperature indicator• Back pressure relief valve
Markets:• Power• Pulp and Paper• Chem / Petrochemical
Applications:• Reduce temperature and pressure of steam samples for analysis

By using the QC Sampler, operators can temporarily interrupt theflow of water to 1800 Series monitors and substitute it withsamples coming from the QC Sampler. In this way, samples fromother parts of the plant, or validation and calibration standardscan be analyzed. The QC Sampler allows for rapid sampling whereno On-Line instrumentation is present, and providestroubleshooting to validate readings without disturbing On-Line operations.
Features:• Compatible with all 1800 series monitors• Portable design• Easy to install• Introduce standards or samples into the monitor for analysis

Dynamic Calibrator
Many analyzers claim to measure in the low ppb range but it can be difficult to verify that an On-Line instrument is accuratelyreading at this low-level. Part-per-billion standards are difficult tomake and maintain, and transporting grab samples for laboratoryanalysis is difficult.
The Low-Level Verification system uses On-Line dynamic dilution. The key component of this system is the Dynamic Syringe Pumpwhich can deliver a steady flow rate of solution or standard downto 0.1 mL/min. The low-level verification kit includes an injectionport, which is installed into the process downstream offlow regulation.
Calculation for the expected concentration of the standard:
The expected reading is the sample reading plus the expectedstandard concentration.
The Dynamic Calibrator can be used for Low-Level Verification of allmodel 1800 Series ISE Analyzers!
